American...Anime?!?

No I'm not talking about the so-so Boondocks, I'm refering to really great shows from a LONG time ago I used to watch in the Nineties', I belive these shows were like the Anime of the US because they were high qaulity and also were based on comic books:

Batman: The Animated series (the REALLY dark one from like 1992)

X-Men

Spider-Man

Batman Beyond

Justice League, Baby! (first seasons)

These shows kicked ass! Anyone American remember, and do any people outside the US see these shows in like a dubbed version?

I loved these shows cuz' they ahd good stories and a lot of emotion just like anime, especially Batman. However, it seems like every other superhero cartoon show fails at this, even new Batman series although theya re allright they don't compare to the s*** I grew up on!

Ya, those were the days.

We had them dubbed in Canadian up here. (hahaha)

For real.

Remember when Batman fought with Two-Face the first time, and at the end everyone was so sad after Two-Face cwent crazy over his coin, and later Batman flipped that coin into the fountain and it came up heads with that dramtic music? I got all teary eyed, and I was just a child, but it proved to me that animation can be emotional and powerful (cue the anime!)

Another sad scene: When Mr. Freeze debut and instead of the dorky freeze you see in the movies and old shows, they introduced a very dramatic, psychologically complex character? I still remember his speech about never being able to feel a a warm hand again. And the ending, where he sat alone with the Glass Model of his dead wife as Batman looked on? So cool...

Also, Mr. Freeze was brought back in Beyond with one of the best episodes of that series.

Another Batman moment: The Raas Al-Gool (spelled wrong, I know!) episode Demon Mask? Man! I still rememeber his crazy laugh at the end of both episodes, and his insane plot with the Lazurus Pit! And the unforgettable cliffhanger at episode one where he was about to throw his daughter into the pit! He was Kefka before Kefka, Sephiroth before Sephiroth, even Shishio before Shishio!

It's kind of weird though, calling it as an American Anime term, when anime refers to japanese cartoons. Besides, they're created in the US...but nothing beats japanese anime's sense of humor! Those angry veins, fancy sweatdrop and those when you jump up 50 feet in the air when someone punches you !!

XD (2x)

I like Spider-man, he pwns XD

American cartoons nowadays are mainly just made to milk a good idea for what it's worth just to make money. Cartoons back in the old days were truly kickass because they were made for art's sake instead of greed's sake. You could tell the creators really put their heart and soul into the cartoons instead of simply trying to appeal to the mainstream viewers.

You need a reason to be sad. You don't need a reason to be happy. The secret to happiness is to face the fact that the world is horrible.

Hey Shishio, remember whenever they show what the name of the episodes were (man, they had good titles) they have this eerie music that matches the villain that episode? For example the Joker or whatever.

When you're first introduced to Poison Ivy (hahaha, she DID date Harvey that time!) and Mad Hatter.

Whenever Batman shows up, they have that really awesome music that always comes when he appears.

I dunno, at first I'm skeptical of The Batman because it ruins the original. I had a hard time getting even getting used to the Batman/Superman Adventures when they made him blue-eyed and took away the yellow utility belt...

Anyways Shishio, did you ever watch the movies? Like the Phantom Mask or Sub-Zero (with Mr. Freeze, kinda goes right before that episode when you first find out he seperated his head from his body. That one line I still remember!)

No, I never saw the movies for Batman, they looked like they were milking the franchise, oh wait I saw Phantasm but it did'nt make the impression that the series made.

And oh yes, I remember the bad ass batman theme! They brought it back in Beyond when he rescued Terry in the Super Bat Suit. I also liked the opening of the original animated series, it never got old! I liked how the music totally matched the actions of each character, right down to the batarang. I also liked how there was nothing cheesy about the episodes, unlike the WORST modern show- Teen Titans! Maybe it is because I'm older, but I and other guys my age can watch Batman(1990) and X-Men (1991 series) and it still is cool because there is nothing cheesy or immature, but Teen Titans just pisses me off!

I remember how X-Men even had some heavy kissing scenes and hardcore romatic/emotional stuff! That show was the s*** t watch on Sat. mornings! Also, I remember the funniest thing I ever saw in X-Men was when Wolverine tore the roof of Cyclops's car and told Jean in that bad-ass voice, "Tell Cyclops: I just made him a convertable."

Yea! That episode against Inque!

Especially compared to Batman Beyond, Bruce was WAY better under disguise compared to Terry. Sub-Zero in the end was basically Freeze's base blew up, they were able to bring back Freeze's wife, and Freeze sees she did come back from watching a couple's TV from outside passing by a cold winter night. He's accompanied by two polar bears and a ice cast on his broken leg.

I remember the Batman Animated series were the only ones where Batman sometimes shifted his eyes different than his sharp look. When something really bad happens like just after Harvey got the accident and Batman is gasping about what happened to his face. OH! Did you ever see the continuing episodes like when there's the robot factory and Robin's past?!

Remember the poker game with all the villans? Joker still cheats to the last card and says "Not the robot theory again..." when Croc (Batman under disguise) starts talking about Batman.

I never did get to see a lot of X-Men episodes. ALl I remember was they always had a To be Continued like Spiderman and Pokemon. 'Cept Pokemon didn't have as serious storyline as X-Men! I never got the times on Saturdays. Gambit was my favorite.

Oh my god, Batman: The Animated series is <3 Mark Hamill is the best Joker ever. Batman: The Phantom Manace is one of my favourite movies of the Batman series.

Scooby Doo it depends

Anime can mean any animated series.

So, Tiny Toons anyone?

I didn't care for Tiny Toons or Scooby Doo, but in a way they are American Anime becuase they all originated from comics except for the 40's cartoons as far as I've known. So these would be in the vein of American comedy anime like our version of Excel Saga? Hardly, as Excel Saga is for adults, so the closest thing we have to our Excel Saga would be like Family Guy!

BTW I hate Scooby Doo, did anyone see when Harvey Birdman made fun of it? SO FUNNY.

If that's how you describe it, FLCL wouldn't be an anime because the manga came after the anime.

I hate Scooby Doo, if I could I would feed Scooby chocolate.

Shishio was talking about American anime. FLCL was made in Japan right? Add Gundam Wing to that list too.

America should NEVER be allowed to make anime . . . they are restricted to 'cartoons'
