web browsers run on the application layer, which is totally separate (yet dependent on) the other networking layers. simply, your web browser does not know what kind of connection you are on. dial-up is a low-band connection, meaning pages will load slowly. <rant> IE is "faulty" because Microsoft's development methods are not agile or concerned with the end user. The corporation are concerned first and foremost with making fiscal profits, not making a good browser. Mozilla is an open source project, so the development staff IS THE END USER! Obviously, they are more concerned with the product than making money. </rant> ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Firefox is more secure than IE right? What about this encryption message I always get whenever I go to a site? |

The fact that mozilla bothers to warn you about the encryption is PART of the security! You can turn the messages off, you know. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

New questions please 1) How do I make Firefox my default browser? I already tried setting it in the options and whenever I opened Firefox, I said Yes to making Firefox my default browser, but still IE is the default that comes up. Or do I just have to bear with it? 2) Where is a link where I can get "extensions" or plugins for Firefox? For example, videos from youtube cannot be played unless some plugin is installed. |

For your first question, i dont quite understand what u r saying. If u have gone through the options menu and set firefox as the default browser and also set it as so when u launch firefox then the default browser should have been firefox. Perhaps u should try again by going through options in firefox and try setting firefox as the default browser. For yor 2nd question, u can get extentions and plugins throught firefox's homepage - http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/central/ (not the google one, u can click the button at the far right hand side of the firefox, its juz below the close button). U can also get the extentions by going to the tools menu and click extention. A new windows named extensions will pop up. Click 'get more extensions' and a new firefox window will open. Finally enjoy downloading! I hope my answers here are usefull. ^_^ |

Ok. Now here's my question. We all know firefox is fast and a more secure browser compared to IE. Microsoft now has developed a better IE (the latest one, i believe its version 7) which is claimed to be more secure than the previous versions. So here's my question, is this latest version of IE more secure or better in whatever way than firefox? |

For the first question of night_link, it sould work when you select firefox as default browser in options. An other way to set a program to defaults, not only browser but also media players and some other programms... Open controle pannel and double click "add or remove program". I know it's kinda strange they put it here but... at the left side you should see 4 tabs, select the last one "set program access and defaults" Then select custom and make your choices! |

"as long as it has activeX, IE is unsafe." I agree :) |

IE7(beta) I used to always use IE6, then I got spyware and had to reformat. Then I always used firefox, but then I started developing a website, and my partner had me use IE6 because, whether or not it's better, more people use it. Now I use IE7 most of the time, and sometimes firefox (although recent stats tell us that 30% of our hits are firefox). I do have some bias though because my dad is ultra pro-microsoft. And the problem with open source (bias talking here) is that because Microsoft wants to make money, they have to make a better program, whereas nobody makes money directly from firefox, and will only improve the parts they feel need to be improved, and only if they have a lot of free time.

In addition to that if your doing web programming firefox browser is more and IE is forgiveable meaning there are errors in firefox that runs in IE7 for example the simple use of division and also firefox provides a lot of security and pop up blocks so i preffered using it :-).

Actually the reason Microsoft is putting so much work into IE7 is because their grip on the internet browsing scene has been seriously challenged by Firefox. If Firefox had never reached the point where it is today, I serously doubt that there would even be such a thing as IE7. Secondly, "nobody makes money directly from firefox" True, but... They will "will only improve the parts they feel need to be improved, and only if they have a lot of free time". Wrongo! When "they" happens to be a very active community of thousands of very talented programmers, stuff happens. Among that many people, there's quite a bit of free time, if I may say so. Maybe you haven't seen anything new out of Firefox in the past few months, but look out! Firefox 2.0 is already in alpha stages and I expect it could be here by the end of the year. Mark my words: Give Microsoft a few months to notice the new features in 2.0 and sooner or later they'll suddenly have the bright idea that this or that feature would be great to add to IE. Don't get me wrong, I don't hold anything against you or anything; I just have a problem seeing someone live on with the complete wrong idea. Oh, and why don't you ask your dad to spend a little ultra pro time with a live cd of Ubuntu Linux and broaden his horizons a little bit for me? It might just do you some good to try it yourself too; see the true power of the open source community! |

Ah yes, forgot to consider how many potential developers there are for firefox.
