@JC - You don't really have to play the Drakengard 1 and 2 to get the main idea of three since Drakengard 3 is pretty much a prequel to the entire series, so, should you ever stumble upon them go ahead and pick them up and you'll just be finishing the story in chronological order. I've been pretty much non-exsistent on Gendou since I'm a semester away from graduating and this semester as has been rough, but thanks to Spring Break I'm going to catching up. Here's my gaming list for the year Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Returns Thief Tales of Symphonia Chronicles Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Tales of Xillia 2 Drakengard 3 I can definitely say that this has been a year for RPG's ![]() ![]() |

I've just been playing Bravely Default for a while now. It's a good solid RPG overall and I have enjoyed it so far, but I don't think it's going to be very memorable. It feels to me like a filler RPG, something I can play while waiting for the big stuff. The characters and villains feel like very standard fare, despite how much gushing I've seen people online do. I dunno, it just feels okay to me. Definitely not the instant classic that people hyped it up to be. I was honestly expecting better. With that said, some of the systems they have in place have been pretty nice to have. Being able to Auto repeat commands and fast-forward battle is nice, as it makes grinding easier. The multiple job classes are also nice. Not sure how I feel about the random encounter meter. Feels like cheating to ever set it below 0. Anyway, other than that. I've got Tales of Symphonia Chronicles CE coming out tomorrow. |

No game purchases for me in the near future. With my PS3 3000 miles away back in California, while I'm in New York for University, there isn't much of a chance for me to play games. However, when I return home in may I will definitely be picking up ToS CE as well as the Left Behind DLC for The Last of Us. @Jon: You don't like Bravely Default that much? I've heard nothing but solid praise for that game. Maiku swears by it and every review I've seen of it has given it a 9.5 at least. Maybe it'll be like your Tales of the Abyss thoughts again, where you're not actually in the popular opinion haha. Then again, everyone IS saying that the plot is mediocre and gameplay is where it truly shines. |

@Haseo - Apparently I am. Personally, if I had to rate it, I'd give it like an 8. It's solid, but if you asked me a few months from now to recall anything about the story or characters, I'd probably draw a complete blank. The game is alright. It's your classic RPG system and the only thing it does differently is the Brave/Default mechanic, which is different, but not particularly amazing. Like I said, it just feels like a solid RPG. It's good all around, but nothing special. Edit: I finally started on Tales of Symphonia Chronicles. I started Dawn of the New World first as I've already played through Symphonia on the Gamecube. Frankly though, I don't know if I'm going to be able to bring myself to finish DotNW. So far it's been some poorly written garbage. I also can't stand the 'monster party' system where you recruit monsters to fill out your party. In terms of that collection system, the only game I can enjoy that in is stuff like Pokemon. In a Tales RPG it just feels like a cop out so that they don't have to come up with a bunch of party members for your team that have things like personality or character arcs. It's still early in the game, but hopefully I'm wrong about this and I can fill out my team with actual characters, since monster team members suck. In terms of the story, again, it's only early in the game, but my god is the dialog so far crap. I just finished a part where ~early game spoilers follow.~ That one bit of dialog was just garbage. From the "Oh, did I mention?" last second timing to the attempt at guilting the protagonist into saving the girl he met 5 minutes ago and knows basically nothing about. ~Further early game spoilers~ I'm not sure how much more I will play. I stopped a little while ago because I'd have enough of it for one night after that previously mentioned scene as well as the one that follows directly after it. I may just drop it and go replay Symphonia. |

Been a long time since any activity here. I'm currently playing Tears to Tiara 2: Heir to the Overlord, started the first part of Freedom Wars for Vita and also playing Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel with my friend. I think I'll enjoy Freedom Wars in the long run, although the controls and battles will take some getting used to. Movement is relatively slow in battle, and yet you can quickly grapple hook around the battlefield as well. So I found it a little hard to get into a groove of attacking the large enemies. Borderlands: TPS doesn't really need any kind of summary. It's a Borderlands game. Me and my friend have been having fun with it, but overall there is no big difference between it and B2. Tears to Tiara 2 has been pretty good so far. I kind of wish they worked out a better pace for it though. I understand that it's a visual novel game with a strategy RPG part in it, but the length of time between watching characters talk and getting to a battle varies so wildly. Sometimes it's like a 3 minute scene and a battle kicks in, sometimes the scene before a battle happens is half an hour. Then it's a complete toss up as to what you can expect to sit through after the battle. At the halfway point in the game, there was a full freaking hour of characters talking after the battle had finished. The entire thing was backstory fluff and an incredibly forced attempt to make one of the enemy characters seem sympathetic at the last moment. The character in question basically had their entire life story flashed back to while they were dying. Personally, I found it fell completely flat. A game telling me that I should suddenly feel sad or get emotional about an enemy character just because they threw a tragic backstory at my face always ticks me off. I would get into more reasons I didn't like that particular scene, but it gets kind of spoilery. Aside from that, there is one major thing about this game that I want to say. My god, is it refreshing to get an RPG protagonist that isn't maxing out the idealism meter at all times. The main character (and the cast for that matter) in this game is what I like to see in an RPG protagonist. He's competent, he's pragmatic and he doesn't have the "If we just talk enough, everything will be rainbows" attitude that so many other RPG main characters get. This is guy who's attitude towards the game's situation is: "Sure, if we beat the Empire we will support you in restoring the old government. Oh, but I won't be tolerating any resistance. You guys start putting up military resistance and I won't hesitate to wipe your country from existence and start from scratch." The main character of this game has a certain amount of ruthlessness that I rarely see. He knows what war means and he knows how it has to end. He either creates a road of corpses to the enemy capital and wipes it out, or his country will end up subjugated again or destroyed and the people will be turned into slaves and suffer. The usual JRPG protag would have the "If we just talk it out or preach enough (or take out the one big bad guy) then there won't be war anymore" outlook. Alternatively, they would spend the entire game whining about how the world is unfair and why can't everyone just see things like I do and not fight. Anyway, I just wanted to ramble about that. I know there are other RPG protagonists that lean towards the realism side of the scale, but I don't see it very often. |
