Hey umm, can someone translate "No Dice" into japanese for me? =p

In Haruhi Suzumia ep2, I heard a phrase that was subbed into "give it up". It sounded like やめとけ. I haven't decoded it beyond figuring out it used やめる.

I have two:

1. "Doushite?"-annoys people to the brink of craziness^_^. even more so to the ones who don't know what it means...

2. "Sore wa himitsu desu!"-got this from a certain character in slayers.

Sousuke and I has this thing going on in messenger where he will ask if I've heard, and I'll reply "Sou desu ka?", and then he'll reply "sou desu ne"

Anyways, we are not even sure what it means :P and the spelling might be horribly wrong, even the sentence might be gibberish :D
So, don't raise your weapons!

We have our fun ^^

Re: Fav japanese phrase?
Sou desu ka=is that right?
Sou desu(ne)=yes, thats right.

The ne particle is used usually for acknoledgement. When you hear a ne in japanese usually you would bow slihtly to indicate your listening. it could be translated into "right" like

neko imasu ne=there is a cat, right.

"sou desu ne..." also means, "hmm, let me think..", its a very useful way of giving yourself time to answer a tricky question. In fact, you can use it as a way to avoid answering, a bit like saying "Hmm, Im not sure...". If you say "sou desu ne..." without adding more, a Japanese person will understand that you mean "no" or disagree, or would rather not answer. This is socially expected in Japanese, because direct disagreement or refusal is considered very awkward and unpleasant socially.

Although "sou desu ka" is a question literally,it quite often doesnt expect an answer. And "sou ka" is mostly not even a question, despite having the ka question marker. It usually means "I see", or "ok". The reason is that it's polite in Japanese not to express certainty and its also polite to give the impression that you have given a statement some thought before answering. That is also why many statements end in "but..." (e.g. desu ga.. and desu kedo..) this is to leave a statement open to other options. Seems crazy to non-Japanese sometimes, but its really quite important to not come across as abrupt or opinionated in Japan, and this is what many of these phrases are really about.

Re: Fav japanese phrase?
Thats intresting, I dient know about tho'se useages, got to remember that for my class, lol. thanks rokuemon

dou itashimashite CrazzyWarrior-san, and I didnt mean to contradict you, because what you said is also correct, it depends on the occasion. Do you have an actualy Japanese teacher in your class? I'd be interested in what their comments are on that... but I guess they can't teach you all the nuances of everything at once, as it becomes too confusing.

But you hear "sou desu nee..." (often with long "ee") on Japanese TV all the time when people are interviewed, sometimes meaning "yes, I agree..." and sometimes, "hmm, well..." and you can see them sort of looking around for a good answer ^^

******

My new phrase is "gokigenyou" [ご機嫌よう]which I picked up from Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru ^^ its a very elegant way to say hello (or goodbye). I think you probably sound a bit stuck up if you go around saying that in real life tho.. ^^;

Re: Fav japanese phrase?
Rokuemon-san wakarimashite, boku no sensei wa amerikajin desu. Demo sensei no (husband) wa nihonjin desu.

She knows the language very well from experience in the class and she has made comments that have eluded me to think her husband is Japanese. We also have 2 native Japanese girls that help in the class. Its monday/wednesday/friday for about an hour. I will try and remember to ask for her input on it.
