Yeah, "yameta" is past tense and "yamete" is a command ("stop!"). Do you have the whole sentence? The sentence you posted seems incomplete. |

@jewo: yameta is derived form from yamemashita which means (stopped), past tense of yamemasu. yamete is derived form from yamete kudasai which means (please stop) but depend on the situation yamete can be mean (stop!) but still its not a command word its more to asking word. and for command word we can use yamero. all of them come from the word yameru which means (stop).

noka wa eigo de nantouimaska? my japanese class is trying to find the meaning of these two little hiragnana, noka with no luck at al, even my teacher's stumped. heres an example, but i may have misread a kanji okane wo morau toiu koto ga donnani taihenna kotona noka ga wakarimashta. (the reason why im so determined to find the meaning is that my teacher is willing to buy our class dinner if we find out XD)

"no ka" ---> originally there's only "ka" which indicates a question i believe there's "no" for the sake of fluidity when speaking and for emphasis "jibun no tachiba ga wakaru no ka!?" = "jibun no tachiba ga wakaru ka!?" (Do you know your position!?) "okane wo morau to iu koto ga donna ni taihen na koto na no ka ga wakarimashita." ---> "okane wo morau to iu koto ga donna ni taihen na koto ka ga wakarimashita." (I understood how hard it is to get money.) kore wa warui no ka? sonna ni taihen na no ka? therefore i believe there's no definite answer - -ll

"no" when used in that sense is the short form of "~ndesu", indicating an explanation. If I recall correctly. I'm pretty sure.  |

I think this thread is awesome, and I hate to be a bother, but could someone visit another forum next tuesday? I don't mean to be a jerk or anything, I mean, feel free to refuse; but we've got these weird and crazy pictures from super smash brothers brawl. They're funny on their own, but somehow I think I'd get a lot more of the jokes if they were translated. I'll donate to the site (or something) if someone throws me a bone here :D |

I was wondering about the word "shite" dÅ shite ("why?") well, "dou" means "how" sÅ shite ("also," or "and...") and "sou" can mean something like "ah, really?" like in ah, sou? shite iru ("did you know?") i do not see the pattern tho... what IS "shite"?!?! if you can help, thank you! |

the examples you gave are slightly incorrect. "doushite" is "why" and your understanding is correct. it's soshite (然ã—ã¦) not soushite, it means "and" and is different from "sou", which is "like that" "to know" is the verb shiru, which is put into the form "shitte iru" NOT "shite iru", so it is different from shite. Note: "shitte iru" cannot be a question unless it is spoken with the rising intonation in the end (i.e. "shitte iru?"). When you write it, you must use a formal and proper way of writing an interrogative form (with ka) Or if you're writing a dialogue..... shite iru means "is doing" In fact, shite is the -te form of the verb suru, which is "to do". hope this is helpful.... |
