first off, I want to mention that i tried to go through all the threads in this topic to make sure it hasnt already been mentioned. I dont have much time left, so i will quickly bullet. My question for debate is, what do you think is more important, based on key facts, in preserving our future as a species? should we concentrate on preserving our existence only here on Earth, or endeavor to migrate into the solar system and beyond? I think we should concentrate on migrateing out. the gears of atrophy here on here are fast moving and would require vast change to stop and repair the damage we are doing to our continued existence here. it seems more likely to move out becuase largely due to economic forces, we will want to gain more resources outside and that would in turn fund our "exidus." (out of time)

Alpha Centauri, the nearest star system, is 412490880000 kilometers away. I'd worry about preserving our own planet first. Edit: My mistake, it is about half a century for a spaceship going at a million kilometers an hour. We don't, however, have enough thrust to accelerate to even half that speed, and planetary slingshots would probably increase the time for travel by another many a decade. |

no, it would take under 50 years. l = 412490880000 km ~ 4*10^11 km v = a million km/h = 1*10^6 km/h t = l / v = 4*10^11 km / 1*10^6 km/h = 4*10^5 h = 45 years again, this talk about exodus is science fiction, and does NOT belong in this topic.
