i cant type too much at the moment but i hope there will be some input by the time i can type out more detail... so dont lock this plz. basically, nasa claims causing a dust cloud from impact is best way to see if there is water. they already hurled thousands in the form of prospector. they shouldnt hav wasted money and worked at causing a dust cloud then even though we couldnt study it as well then. anyways, thats the issue aswellasthe likelyhoodof consequencesto us since moonISvital to ourworld-more ltr

If you think that money was "wasted" on the prospector lunar mission, I do not expect to change your mind. Personally, I find all pursuits of knowledge worth undertaking, so long as they do not endanger any lives. Among the many objectives of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is to identify near-surface water ice in polar cold traps. You suggested that there might be Earthly "consequences" to this mission. This is entirely false. Meteoroids have been blowing up clouds of dust on the moon for all its history, with no ill effect on the Earth or its life-forms. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I agree with gendou on this. The only loss was that of money, and in turn we will gain knowledge that we can use for many year. What kind of consequences are you talking about? Just curious, because as gendou said, the moon has taken plenty of dust-lifting impacts in the past. Now if they were planning on blowing up the moon, that would be a different story, but I don't know if we can even accomplish that without a serious mining operation and MANY explosives. Its a shame they didn't find water though.
Cursed are those who seek with bias. Abandon your past and be saved.

I am really sorry my words were taken as so. But i am not able to post very long posts with everything i wish to say since my psp is VERY limited in space and typing. I was really excited to discuss here in the forum but only pieces of what i meant to say were convey if not misunderstood. Here is my more clarified statement I had originally wished to make. I am well aware of the prospector lunar mission's findings, provided well in your link as well as the lunar reconnaissance orbiter's goals. Also, I know how insubstantial tossing our technology, minus being explosive-augmented, onto the moons surface is. I also didnt mean to say that wasting any amount of money in pursuit of knowledge is/was a waste, in fact i think we should spend more. What i meant, was how it was a waste how in the end, NASA was unable to cause a sufficiently sized impact into the moon to cause the plume of debris which could further be anayzled. Originally, I had thought they didnt put the effort into increasing the velocity and angle of the impact, that is why i said they shouldnt have wasted money, in an ill-formed manner. What I was really concerned about is in this future mission, the details about how if it is confirmed that there is enough water to be gleamed from the moon, how mining will affect the moon and therefore us. This, i think, is of much more concern than simple impacts. The future consequence i was referring to was in how mining would become reality and how we may potentially have a situation in the future. either simply being risky in mining deeper in the moon to gleam more water could cause structural integrity in a large portion of the pole to be lost, that is, if they get greedy. also, on how, in the future, it is planned, that bases will be set up and likely, near the mining sites. one other aspect i was pondering was in how, in the even more distant future, when we are able to freely transit between here and the moon, how commercialization can increase this mining disaster, although, this last bit i just wished to mention since it ventures into science fiction.
