No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act

What are your opinions on this act? I am trying to see how people feel about it. Please give truthful answers; I will NOT use any UNLESS you say it's ok (please let me be able to figure out a name, first and last, if so). Thanks!! |

This act was put into place to improve reading and math standards, ensure that all children have equal opportunity to get a high-quality education, and closing the gap between high and low students (basic points). Here's a site with it : http://www.ed.gov/policy/elsec/leg/esea02/index.html That's all I want to give right now just because my opinion will spill out otherwise, and that might change your view ^^. But I'm not against sharing and debating!! Afterward, huzzah debates of any kind that may arise!! |

Unfortunately I live in Florida. The FCAT falls inot that wonderful act and neither one are effective. The test is flawed and inefficient and I have seen no real proof that things in FLorida have improved in the four years I've been living here. Those who were failing before are still failing and the government does nothing to help. Yeah, fail on that one I think... |

I agree with Doctor. I'm a Cali A+ Asian girl, and to be honest, I've NEVER heard of that before. And people who are failing are stil failing, so it does nothing to help. |

TO ANY WHO WANT TO FORM THEIR OWN OPINION-SEE MY 2ND POST-PROBABLY SHOULDN'T READ THIS. And now a kittykat rant: Otherwise (to Doctor?-san and Sakura-san): Exactly!! In fact, standards are DROPPING here in NY. The Math A exam this year had such a curve that A 39 WAS ROUNDED TO A 65. AND SOME HIGH GRADES DROPPED BC OF IT. What the heck is that for?!? How does this promote higher standards of education?! I interviewed the principal on this act and I ended going back again and again to get clearer answers. ^^ He probably got sick of me, but then he should have given me his opinionated answers...kept getting this oddball junk he was supposed to tell people. Bet he didn't think I'd keep popping up.^^ ...Rant's over for now. n_n I feel better now. BUT, if anyone supports the act, POST!! I have yet to find truthful people supporting the act. If you do, say why!! And if you don't, say why!!(I'm really into this bc nobody at my school has much of a clue about it enough to talk much ^o^) |

What I don't like about the act is that it doesn't really help children at all. Actually according to the English department that I'm working with right now standards in this area are going higher but the kids aren't meeting the standard. This year they actually counted spelling on the 7th grade writing exam. But what really gets my goat is that they want ALL children to be on the "accepted" grade level... including children uncapable due to physical/mental inabilities. Thus, if they aren't performing on the grade level for their own class then the school fails that one particular area and is then held accountable for the WHOLE school failing. Also it's not done by ratio either. If there is a lower percent of one group of children compared to the others and there are a few who don't pass it's easier for the overall grade of that area to go down and not pass. Personally, I liked the idea when it was started: about everyone deserves an education and that everyone is capable of succeeding. Yet, they went about it the wrong way. Tests can measure retainablity... but not everyone is a good test taker. Also, not everyone learns at the same speed. With this program it almost makes it impossible for teachers to actually TEACHING their material. They have to just make sure they cover everything regardless if everyone understands or not. Personally I think they should have inforced afterschool study programs for students who are falling behind. Provide transportation for those who cannot afford rides and then help them outside of the classroom as well. When you actually take the time to work with someone because you believe in them it actually makes a difference. While I do think that no child should be "left behind" in the education system... I think that this program has royally screwed over the education system. *sigh* I have actually yet to meet an education major who believes otherwise. |

...more minirant...How can the system expect everyone to be a certain level when everyone has different learning potential? If you promote the more advanced people and help the people who need it that's good, but you can't have a single level then for everyone to be on. You can't smoosh everyone onto one stair... |
