I need some help please
Link | by Ariana on 2006-03-30 18:18:18
Ok, before I state my problem, I wanted to let it be known that I searched the forum to see if anyone else was experiencing the same trouble I was coming across. I did the same things that other people had problems with and it still isn't working for me. Anyway...

Everytime I right click and hit "save link as," my computer saves it as an MPEG movie file. The file name has .mp3 at the end, but for some weird reason, it won't save as anything else except as an MPEG file. I tried fixing the settings in firefox and nothing is working. I've downloaded plenty of music from this site and it's never happened to me, so it's pretty weird. Any help would be appreciated :)

I had the same problem just last month, though in my case, I knew that it had something to do with a plug-in that FireFox prompted me to install just before I downloaded 3 more songs, in MPEG files but with .mp3 extensions---Apple Quicktime. Like yae, I thought that it was so unusual since it never happened before because I was able to download more than 80 songs normally. And so, deleting that (useless) program solved the problem. Dunno if this is the case with yae, just wanna share it. :)

EDIT: I was using Opera at that time... I guess FireFox was trying to invade/play with my poor Opera! T.T (weird...lol)

I tried what you suggested and uninstalled Quicktime (I HATE that program, but it's still not working.

The problem isn't so much that I can't listen to the music (because I can and it works fine), it's that I have an iPod and of course they have to be mp3 files to upload onto it.

I don't have Opera and I tired changing the action in the options for firefox, but it hasn't worked ;o; I feel like an idiot for asking this, but it's really frustrating ><

well, i should hope it saves it as an MPEG file, cause thats what an MP3 is: MPEG Layer 3.
i dont know what software you are using, but it ought to let you copy any file to your iPod which ends in ".mp3".
rest assured that all files you download from gendou.com are indeed in mp3 format, wether your computer knows it or not.

EDIT: where exactly does it say "MPEG"? in firefox or in Windows or in your copy-music-to-iPod program?

Well, yes I understand that, but it's saving as an MPEG movie file, which seems a bit weird to me. It has never done that before. I don't know if it's my computer or me being an idiot.

Ok, let's say I'm downloading "Accettami" from Black Cat. When I right click and hit "save link as," the box pops up asking me where I want to save the file. The file name says "Black_Cat_-_Accettami.mp3", but save as type says MPEG movie. Sooo...it must be me and I don't know how to fix it.

Ah Ariana. I think I know the solution to your problem.

You're using Firefox with a newly-installed Apple Quicktime, right? Because everytime the Quicktime plugin is being installed into Firefox, it will override (or in simpler terms, mess up) the download settings for Firefox. That's why it tends to become a headache whenever I have to install Quicktime. :(

Anyway, here's the solution - open up Firefox, go to Options -> Downloads tab -> View & Edit Actions, and find for the extension MP3 (and there's another 3 of them that's together but I've forgotten which - anyway, MP3's our main focus here). Then, you simply just choose it and delete the action.

Behold the possibilities ! The end is merely the start of a new history !

I figured it was that since I saw it in an earlier post. I did that and still doesn't work. Maybe I did it wrong. Anyway, here's what I did.

Tools-->Options-->clicked the download button

There are three sections: Download folder, download manager, and file types. Under file types, only AVI, MOV, RAM, WAV, and MID are listed. I even clicked the Plug-ins button and I can't find MP3 anywhere. This is quite annoying, but I REALLY appreciate your help :)

*scratches head* ......

OK. This starts to sound tricky, especially when I'm so accustomized to the newer version of Firefox, I've forgotten about how the old one works. :S

Anyway, how about looking into the settings of the Quicktime player ?

look, for the last time, it doesnt MATTER what your browser SAYS the file type is! in face, it is NOT INCORRECT: MP3 is one form of MPEG!

in computers, a "file type" is just a HINT to tell the computer which program to open it with.
on the internet, file type is supposed to be computed using mime-type.
the gendou.com webserver will ALWAYS send the correct mime-type.
in the windows operating system, file type is determined entirely by the suffix after the "." in the filename.

truthfully, i dont care if you understand that or not. neither does your iPod. just put the files on there and see if it works before bitching in the forum about how "annoying" it is, ok?
