Well, not really a fan but i still like it, but one thing... can you explain to me what the hell is this anime's ending all about?? i thought the main story is about saving the world from the angels but it turns out to be shinji-centered... and in the ova the entire human race is wiped out... the creator really has a twisted way of thinking... but that's why i like this anime... |
Re: Any fans of Neon Genisis Evangelion out there?

NGE spoilers, of course: It depends on which ending you're referring to. The original episodes 25 and 26 or 'End of Evangelion'? Theories exist that both endings are different prespectives on the same narrative; that episode 26 tells the viewer what is going on in Shinji's mind during Third Impact and that 'End of Evangelion' shows the external side of the Human Instrumentality, the physical imapact of it, if you'll excuse the horrible pun. In both endings Human Instrumentality is intiated and, as such, everyone reverts to their previous form as LCL, or the primordial soup of life, and become a single perfect entity where all individual weaknesses are bettered by individual strengths. It's unclear as to whether the Third Impact is used for Human Instrumentality in the original TV series ending. In the film, 3rd Impact is started by SEELE's terms under Gendou's interference. Anno's state of mind is generally accepted as being rather...unusual at the time of EOE's conception. It's said that he was very depressed and very angry at his fanbase for the hate mail he and Gainax studios recieved after the TV ending. This is often suggested as being the biggest reason for EOE being such a bitter and traumatic conclusion. Though, excellent in thought, nonetheless. Does this cover it all for you, is there anymore you'd like to hear? |
Re: Any fans of Neon Genisis Evangelion out there?

It's true that he was pretty pissed off at the hate mail that he was getting. After the show ended, unhappy fans actually sent him death threats, and then when End of Eva came out, he got even more. It was pretty hectic. Fans didn't want it to end, and the creators didn't know how to end the anime and not tick off too many folks.
Anime is w00t. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about. =)

So, did the world end in EOE? If so, where were Shinji and Asuka in the last scene? Was it some kind of after life place, or what? I'm so confused.....

For one, i like Evangelion as an action piece, for its imagination and its conception, detail, and cohesion - utnil the end of course. The biblical references were really nice too. I think the most disappointing thing might have been the end. I think he intended it to be very symbolical. It's sort of like Akira or X the Movie I guess...where in the end, you'ren ot totally sure, except Evangelion really takes it to the extreme where you're totally in the dark. It's a pretty dark anime though to tell the truth...watching it is EXCESSIVELY depressing. I mean, it has its points, but the overall feeling is just ... really a disappointing feeling. I don't mean disappoinging as in bad ending - cause the two endings do contradict each other - it's just depressing. The thing I hated, as in really HATED is the collection of Cases. That was a blasing waste of time, and it seriously gave me a seizure. I mean it defiantely gives you access to state of mind, but still, it's a very depresing thing to think about...that all anyone can think about is such depressing stuff. I think it was the cases that led me to think of EOE as depressing as well. I couldn't finish watching the Cases, I never did. It just seriously gave me a headache. Otherwise, I like it. I don't love it. It has its strange air that i find a lot of deeper and popular animes have - like Akira. I mean...even the music is warpedi n such a way it's beautiful, but really twisted. And it sorta suits it I guess. haha. speaks to you on a subconcious level. |

I really don't like the fact that I don't like a character, and the character I'm referring to is Asuka. I apologize to those who like her, and no offense to her audience, but she came off as a major BITCH, ESPECIALLY in EOE. She came off as being selfish, and always "me, me, me." Again, sorry to those of you who like her. Kaoru was majorly hot, though. Plus, one of my favorite voice actors, Akira Ishida, played his role, which was a double plus ^^ it's just a shame that they stuck him in, like, at the end. He was such a cool character. |

My theory on this is that Eva made you think about things that you ordinarily wouldn't think about, but is always had in the back of your mind. It went places few anime go. It started as a typical giant robot anime, but progressivly got darker and by the time episode 18 came along (the episode I think when the series turned really dark)you were already wondering "What more can happen?" I have alot in common with Shinji. I was uncomfortable around people, wasn't good with girls, I didn't have a good relationshipwith my father, and did whatever anyone told me because I was worried noone would not like me. But I got through all that and now I'm a complete person loving life. At the end of episode 25 Shinji finally figures out life is what you make it and if you don't like it, you have the power to change it. Sorry for the long post thanks for reading. ^^ |

Evangelion is definetly a diffrent anime. When I watched the last episode(Not the OVA)I was totaly pissed. I hated the whole "cases" thing. But after I watched the OVA I felt disappointed. After going back and watching the last episode again, I felt that the story(The angels)was all just a discovering of self story for Shinji. I love all the drama in this series. It was more about the human condition than about all the angels, eva ect. I kind of connect with Shinji. His whole wanting to feel liked and appreciated parallels with my life. The people who talk about Shinji ( He is a wimp, gay , loser ect.) they don't understand what he represents. Everyone has a bit of an inferiority complex. I think Shinji represents the human experience of growing into yourself. Shinji was struggling with everyday teen issues on a larger scale. He hit that point in his life when he had to decide " Why do I exist. What is my purpose in life." But on the opposite side of that there was Asuka who seemed to represent selfishnes and hate. I personally fell in love with Asuka's character. Her "bitchyness" was a fresh take on the whole nice good guy thing. She was fighting to impress where as Shinji was fighting to be noticed. That was kind of long wasnt it??? Sry... |

That show is really amazing. Created in 1995, I think, around that time period. I never really got a change to see the movie but it looks pretty cool! I love the Music to Eva, especially the intro. Alot of anime cartoonists today are trying to build a new style of anime, which must be very difficult. I wanna see anime shows 20 years from now. I wanna see how much they will compare against shows made a long time ago. The oldest anime I know is Astroboy(with some big robot). ------- |

I can say it was one of the best animes i've ever watched though i watched over and over to understand some parts of it... It was interesting and the story was great Characters were realistic and it was different than other animes...I still think that it was a little depressing (especially the cases of Shinji Ikari) but it was interesting at the same time... I think it was the best work of Anno Hideaki and Studio Gainax :D |

I absolutely adore EVA, check my sig! *ahem* I think everything about it is amazing, interesting, and fresh. Even today, ten years after it premiered, it still holds just as much influence on other hits, especially Rahxephon. I also loved the characters and I didn't think Asuka was that bad, it's refreshing to see a complete bitch in an anime every once and a while. |

I saw the series about 2 years ago, I also own both movies. I thought it was a great Anime but you really have to watch it at least twice to understand it completely.

Lol my friends had a Evangelion drinking game. i forgot how it goes but then it had something to do with everytime that shinji screams, two shots. everytime shinji says "help me", one shot. Everytime shinji decides to quit, 4 shots. everytime Rei dies, a shot. (i dont know if they counted the fifty million Reis that were floating around)(they probably did) and so on and so forth
(enter cool sig here)
