Legend of Mana
Link | by amano-san on 2006-03-18 23:30:14
Ok, let's start. There's already a Secret of Mana, but I don't know that so I'll stick with this.

Legend of Mana is one of the good 2D graphical non-linear rpgs, although some quests might seem/get a little boring, because of the traditional monsters, dungeons, weapon upgrades, etc., but it's something worth the time (for a little relaxation) between intensified long hours of playing other game genres. The atmosphere is really enjoyable, colorful and fun, like that of Chrono Cross. Well, Squaresoft never fails to amuse its rpgamers, doesn't it?

The OST is something to look for also! Yoko Shimomura's expertise in BGMs are just outstanding! :D

For any game to be compared to Chrono Cross, it must be great! I've never played Legend of Mana before, although I have played Secret of Mana. I assume they both have the same action-rpg style. It seems like fun, I'll give it a shot (if I can find it) after I finish all the other Square games I have to beat: FF Tactics, FF X-2, FF IX, and Chrono Cross. I just beat Star Ocean: Till the End of Time(a 60 hour+ long game) and if LoM is as long, it'll be fun.

Square always has fantastic music, so no surprise there!

BTW, what's the story? Is it the "good guys have to collect stuff to beat a baddie" thing? I mean, it's not always bad and I can cope with it, but is it like that?

From what I've read, it's one of the Seiken Densetsu Series and it's predecessor is the Secret of Mana (I'll have to check this out). FAnd yae are right. ^^ It's all about Mana; the Legend of Mana, as the title implies. Yae can read a little from Wikipedia to get an overview.

To summarize everything, this is where yae collect artifacts, which are rewarded after yae have completed a number of missions (note: A LOT). With these artifacts, yae will have to disperse them in the world map--these either turn into towns, forests, dungeons, orchards, etc., which later on, you'll have to explore as well to get another artifact/s. Though, it will not be that easy because yae have will have to carefully choose which artifact to use first, which side quests should yae take, which side characters (sidekicks; there are A LOT) should yae recruit to this mission and to that. Yae play like a God here because yae shape their fate, yae decide on everything so everything becomes non-linear. ^^

So basically, yae are on a quest to save the world in real-time battle where yae do not simply choose an attack and wait for the game to deliver the blow. But rather, you'll have to guide the battles on your own. And like what I've said, yae are to shape the world because, Mana (world) has yet to be shaped. Along the artifacts are sacred artifacts (of 8 elements) which are to complete everything. Of course, there're always evil as antagonists, with their main purpose of plaguing the land. Wipe 'em out!

The Chrono Cross comparison's not entirely on the battle gameplay, just the environment. Both are colorful and quite fancy. ^^

Hope yae enjoy the game when yae get your hands on it!

:D

actually, although i havent been able to verify it anywhere, i believe legend of mana is somewhere just off to the side of the main series...either that, or the fourth game of it. the third mana game was only released in japan, although you can find a translated rom of it if you look around hard enough.

I played Legend of Mana... and it's my favorite. I finished it once..,and I only saw one ending. this game is breathtaking yah know. I played the role of the boy!! when I tried to play the piano in Domina, eeekk! dont ask...

there are so many collectible artifacts there, and I like the bgm when you are placing it in the ground, and yah know how it puffs!!

What I hate in this game is when you chose the wrong answer from the people's question you can't change it... especialy from the dudbears!! in order to communicate with them and for you to sell the lamps you have to memorize or take down notes of their basic language... and also the mission in Polpota harbor with the sirens.., i chose the wrong decision so i wasn't able to finish it. I was forced then to play the game from the very start!!!! HEKZ.... ammmphfff..!!

Jawo00ortz!! I forgot the name of that city... I think its Junkyard..! I got lost there... ammmphhfff..!! because the place looked like a freaking maze!! you have to go back and forth 3 times to finish it!! eeekk... creepy!! the monsters there are voodoo dolls!! wow!!

oiisst!! BRB!! ammmppff!

Hey, I was there watching! The Junkyard mission was really fun. ^^; Lots of crossroads. But then, the same monsters that pop-out will already give a hint from where yae are exactly at. Use that to your advantage.

As for the dudbears, I'll have to admit that I had to take down notes too because the lamps needed to be sold are approximately equal to the number of dudbears that will be interested enough to buy 'em. So if yae miss one (said the incorrenct dudbear "response"), you'll fail the mission. Though, some dudbears speak complex dudbear language, so you'll have to mix some of the basics and just guess what that meant.

Good thing I did well in the Sirens' quest! Ha!

Yeah, I played this game. I focused mainly on the pets and weapon forging. I'm happy with my Polter Box, Sky Dragon, Land Dragon, Springball, and Mana Tree Tomato Man pets, as well as my 300+ power Sword. Of course my friend has a 999 power bow, axe, hammer, and sword. He spent close to 500 hours making them.

Thanks for the link Amano-san, I'll check it out! My neighborhood Blockbuster always sells old games, maybe they'll have it! That's how I got Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

Ooohhh the Dudbear language!
I had a hard time with that one.... Most of them ended up hating me so it took me a while to sell all the stupid lamps....
I can't believe I bought that game 3 years ago and I still haven't finished it...
