VBR

What is variable bitrate (VBR)? Is it a good bitrate? What are ups and downs of mp3s encoded like this. |
Re: VBR

Basically, it encodes the complicated sections of a song at a higher bitrate (say... between 160kbps and 320kbps) and the less complicated sections at a lower bitrate (between maybe 64kbps and 128kbps). It allows for high quality encodes with relatively small file sizes.

Is it good if mp3s are encoded in this way or is it better if they are encoded in a uniform bitrate, say for example 128 kbps? |

Quoting Filter, "It allows for high quality encodes with relatively small file sizes." So yes, that is a good thing. |

Usually when encoding to VBR you have the option to set a "quanitizer" (usually a number between 1-10) which is how high you want the overall quality to be. Set to 1, the quality may range from 28-128kpbs during the song. Set to 10, the quality may range from 256-512kbps throughout the song (completly overkill). Usually go with a 6 or 7 on a scale from 1-10. |
