Encoding / compressing anime

I hope this wasn't discussed already. I did a search but nothing came up.

I've read some guides but they get a bit confuzind.
I'm trying to find out what xviD settings and methods are used by the sub groups such as [DB] and [Lunar] for their subs such as Bleach and Naruto. When I did a test encode off a DVD, my end result was nowhere near as nice, sharp and clear as the abovementioned.

Did any of you ever compress anime using xvid?

>_<

There's no place like 127.0.0.1

I never used xvid. A friend of mine uses winHex to try and compress the video to make it smaller and clearer, but the image gets a little wacky because you're taking little tiny bytes from the movie.

Well, I've got a good answer for you guys that should answer your prayers.

http://www.autogk.me.uk/index.php

Go to this site and download the latest stable version of Auto Gordian Knot (autoGK). Once you install it, use a program like DVD Decrypter and copy the video itself to your harddrive.... oh crud, DVD Decrypter has been copyrighted.... well, in that case use either one of these:

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/DVDFab_Decrypter.htm
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/AnyDVD.htm

In theory these should work, but I've never used them in particular. Now, after it's copied the DVD to the harddrive, open up autoGK and follow the simple step by step instructions.

NOTE: you may need to click the advanced tab and select VBR MP3 and not the other audio format it normally defaults to, this will fix the audio problems most people have.

IMPORTANT: If you want the video to be the same size and nearly perfect quality (It really is practically naruto quality, it's not bad!) click the top tab on the right if it isn't already (I think it's called file size), and choose MAXIMUM QUALITY for it (NOT the other ones, like 2GB, 2CDs,etc.). Then click add job and start and it should encode.

It will take about three times as long to encode a video as it does to play it and the file size of one average length episode (24 minutes) should be around 170MB, give or take 10MB or so. The quality I can almost guaruntee you will be unparalleled compared to anything else out there and I CAN guaruntee that you will be impressed.

If you have any problems, just post another message, or IM me on AIM at sagara117. If the other DVD decrypting programs don't work with autoGK, just tell me on AIM and I'll either email one that works or send it through AIM to you.

Im assuming you're working with an already compressed file so..

they take the huge RAW around 400-600mb per episode and do the encoding/compressing to make it simmer down to around 160-250mb before sticking them on torrents. =)

You can still do the same with pre-encoded video using other programs.
In this case Xilisoft can do a pretty good job encoding between formats, but if you want to maximize quality for size like fansub groups, then (this is the only program I'd recommend buying or getting by another means ;) because it's quality is unparalleled) the official DivX encoder. Of all the encoders I've ever used, it is by the far the best. One of the cases of where you definitely get what you pay for (I think it's 20$ for the pack of the encoder, proplayer, and codec manager - which has some nice features too).
