How would you rate your Japanese Skill?
Link | by Hathen on 2006-03-06 20:50:31
I suppose this is a 1-10 scale. I'm just interested in knowing what levels some of you can speak at.

I'd give myself a 1. I've been learning Japanese for almost three years now in high school, and I still probably cannot have even a simple conversation with a Native born Japanese speaker with continuously asking "mou ichidou onegaishimasu" or "Yukkuri onegaishimasu". The biggest problem for me is the listening portion. I'm sure if I talked slow with Japanese the natives would understand me, but I can't understand natives because they tend to talk really fast.

I'd say I communicate at a relatively low level. Something from a second to third grade level of Japanese, maybe. The worst part is is that I'm probably the best out of my classmates, seeing as how I'm Chinese, and I learned that language first, so the grammar and kanji all come easier to me than they do to the other students.

Bah, this'll be bad. :)

Reading Comprehension: 9
Writing Skills: 9
Conversational Skills: 4
Listening Skills: 7

I can read and write very well (at my level anyway), but when it comes to conversation.. well, most of the time I get too nervous. :P Yeah, it's mostly about being nervous because I don't have faith in my abilities just yet. *sigh* Which just makes me wish I had a Japanese buddy from school. :\

On a scale of 1 (Hopeless Noob) to 10 (Fluent/Near-Fluent)...

Reading: 6
Writing: 5
Speaking: 5
Listening: 5

I rate myself so low because of my meager vocabulary. That and the lack of speaking practice are what's hamstringing me right now.

I would say... 5. My understanding and everything is great, and I can pick it up really fast, but because I only somewhat recently started formally studying (before it was horrible self-study, yuck) my vocab is VERY low, and there's still I gotta learn. But for what I do know already, I would say I can perform on a 8-10 level. It's more of a matter of just learning the rest of what I need to learn.

Reading: 6
Writing: 3
Speaking: 8-9
Listening: 9-10

I have no problem understanding what people are saying, unless they're using difficult words, but speaking is more difficult because of all the forms and lack of experience. I can read and write hiragana and katakana, but I'm horrible at kanji. I can recognize some of them when reading, but I can barely write any of them.

Reading: 4
Writing: 3
Speaking: 8
Listening: 8.5

Basically, I can't write kanji, still learning, I can only read and write hiragana and katakana, but I can speak and understand Japanese good enough.

I really need to take some core classes, but all I've been doing for the past two years is just reading and writing japanese through books, that and learning other languages really takes away my time to teach myself japanese even more.

About a 0.1 on a scale of 100. I want to learn, but I don't know where to start?

I'm pretty high in all of them. I can listen to almost any conversation and know what they are talking about. o.o But when it comes down to writing, I SOMETIMES have a hard time. ^^; That's the only spot I lack upon. I love talking though, and I can read aloud/quietly at a regular pace. o.o meh, I'm above average in the language, i guess.

You seem pretty confident. How long have you been studying the language?

isn't it more accurate if we ask friends to rate us other than only rating ourselves? might be able to obtain different views from other perspectives. well, that is.. if there are actually someone who can communicate in japanese.

Reading: 10 (actually more like over the roof)
Listening: 10 (same as above)
Writing: 2
Speaking: 10 (more the same as above)

Why am I so good? I AM Japanese who lives in Canada ^^" so yeah I used to live there until I was 10 so I was raised there. I'm technically Chinese because my parents are, but I refer myself to as Japanese simply because its easier than explaining everything; everyone asks me more than twice, I swear. They say, arent you Japanese cuz you were bron there. NOOO!! lol =)

Despite the fact that I have taken three years of Japanese, I really wasn't the best of students so I'd have to rate myself down there with Lucifer.
Reading: 5
Writing: 2
Speaking: 2
Listening: 3
(I need to stop watching my anime with subs and just submerse myself in the Japanese, but I care too much for the story to ever allow myself to miss a word... Am I in a bind.)

I am a Japanese who live in US, growing up in Japan for my first 13 years of my life, but I still wouldn't give myself a 10 in reading, listening or speaking. I don't have any problem with general conversation or reading in Japanese. But I am not skilled at it compared to Japanese of my age who lived in Japan all their lives.

Really, 「源」 ? Well...it may have to do something with me learning advanced things when I was in Japan...when I was Grade 4 I knew Kanjis that were taught in Grade 10 or middle school year 3. So yeah...I was having really complicated conversations with my parents, I was writing complicated Kanji, and was watching news once in a while. But now its all wasted, I probably only know how to write Grade 1 Kanjis, I swear. Im terrible now.

I guess it all depends on your standard...

I can still read Japanese newspaper or watch news and understand just fine. I am not 10 in my standard though.

As for education, I took entrance exam to private Japanese junior high (and actually passed), so I had above average education. It just went downhill from there since education on Japanese language stopped at age 13 when I came to US. I still used it, but it's not same as learning more. Oh well, it's a trade off.

I'm in my first year of Japanese at my high school. At my level:

9 Hiragana Comprehension
2 Katakana Comprehension
8 Hiragana Writing
1 Katakana Writing
8 Vocabulary (what I have learned so far)
9 Kanji (what I have learned so far)

Though, I'm still pretty slow in my speed for Hiragana, and I forgot all but a few of my Katakana, I'd rank myself 2nd in my class.
