Help a Linux noob?

OK, somehow I got Gentoo Linux installed with KDE running as a first time linux user. Now I at least have a pretty interface. These are my no means the entirity of my issues, just the most pressing ones.
[Solved!] Problem #1: Webpages in Konqueror don't look right. It sucks as a browser. I want Opera or Firefox (prefered). I have downloaded both but how does one install software on linux. All attempts at following website's instructions have ended in error messages of various types.
EDIT: I got firefox up and working finally, yay! I think I've made progress towards sound too but I'm not sure yet.

Problem #2: No sound. I know, it sucks. I don't really know where to start but I think it's some kind of driver problem. You'll have to probe with specific questions to be able to help me on this one. I have no idea how linux works after all.

i'm a linux user(i use debian-sarge version,and a gnome desktop though)
just want to know:
1)what sound card are you using?
2)which linux kernel are you using?is it kernel v2.4 or kernel v2.6?

in regards to question 2,i had the same problem with my sound card(i use sound max),no sound played when playing music or watching anime when i use kernel 2.4. i upgraded to kernel 2.6 and everything worked perfectly.

i used linux for sometime and yea, some part is not that user-friendly.can't install games or files with the .exe extention.but it's good to use as a server,i'd say it's better than windows NT,2000 server and 2003 server

The quickest fix that might work would be to reinstall the sound drivers or download them online (but you probably already knew that), and the other would be to use the hardware configuration editior (the equivalent of- I haven't used Gentoo so I don't know what it calls it) and check the properties that way.

Vista = BAD
It's overdemanding for an OS and the minimum system requirements for it are INSANELY high. The other issue is the system resources it eats up, sure the processing speed may be faster but everything else gets slowed down because of the OS itself!
I wouldn't waste my time with it. I'm not a Gates hater, but Windows has become a lot less performance friendly than it used to be, which is why we must teach the world the beautiful ways of Linux!

I'm using kernel v2.6 and my sound card is my integrated card on my Nforce4 motherboard (your basic AC97 audio). I was reading tutorials online and I basicly followed the instructions here up to a certain point, using their integraging into the kernel option. Once I got down to step three where it tells you to emerge alsa-utils, I tried to, but it gave me some error I can't remember and wouldn't emerge. So I figured I would just try OSS instead, but still haven't gotten around to it yet.
Another curious occurance: The reboot command no longer works. I just came home from school one day after leaving linux up and when I decided to reboot to switch I typed it into the console expecting it to reboot the computer like it had in the past. Instead it just gave me a "-bash command not recognized" or something like that. Linux just doesn't make any sense to me...

for the reboot command, check the /sbin folder.if it's not there,it might have got deleted away.if it's there, something might be wrong with the kernel.have you tried using #init 6 in command line or terminal?i use this to reboot my com or you can press ctrl+alt+del in command line mode.

about your AC97 sound card, are you using Realtek AC97 soundcard?(sorry,i usually buy my motherboard without any integrated soundcard)if you are, which version?

Linux is great, especially when used as servers. Most of the big sites out there use Linux as their OS for their servers.

Linux is also great if you don't want viruses, trojans, spywares and worms. You don't need an antivirus to protect your PC!

One revelation: Microsoft uses Linux for their OS servers as well. Talk about using your own product! To see for yourself, visit Netcraft.com. You just type in the site that you wanna check the servers of the sites. Gendou.com uses one Linux server... Hope that gendou won't get me banned for this...

One more: Linux has everything you need.

Last: Linux has a portable OS, it is in a CD, named Knoppix. My prof used it in a Windows- based OS, he put the CD in then rebootd the PC. the Linux OS ran and it was so cool! Imagine a portable OS... And the files you created in that Portable OS can be saved through your HDD. It won't damage your system.

netcraft.com looks like a pretty nifty site.

the knoppix cd is useful but some of the features are not really installed.and because it's a cd,when loading softwares,it'll take quite sometime.
but when you said microsoft used linux,i was like O_O.i thought they should be supporting their own product...

I've pretty much decided to give up on linux for now. I really don't need linux, as I can do everything I need to with windows so far. Maybe (probably) I'll come back sometime in the future, but for now, just not worth the trouble.

Thanks for your help though!
