About sigs and graphics.

I had a couple of thoughts. The limit on a sig is 100px high. The reason is to limit the file size. As I recall the total for both sig and ava is 100kb? 150kb? I help set that up for our dialup members. We use thumbnails of larger graphics for the same reason. Only I wonder... The question here is not one of display size ie 100x400 but one of filesize. In going through my photobucket account and checking thumbnail sizes I found the largest thumbnail filesize to be well under 50kb, with most of them being much less than 15kb. Therefore I would like to suggest the following;
Comments?Don't forget that the physical size of a graphic can have little to do with the filesize. What makes the files large are the amount of colours used. Fewer colours, smaller files. The filesizes for the full size images below are l-r 9.5kb, 14kb, 28kb. Together the full size display is 52kb, just over my suggested maximum. ![]() ![]() ![]() Comments? ![]() |

You must also keep in mind that simply putting height=100 in your tag doesn't make it any smaller. The browser just scales the image down to size physically while the file size is still the same. I could put a wallpaper sized picture into a thumbnail and you still end up downloading the whole image just to see the thumbnail. That's all you did here. You made it physically fit but the load time is the same as having it full size on the page. |

The only reason sig height is limited to 100px is because my finger gets tired scrolling past them. Short/wide sigs allow me to see the posts, which i care about. i dont particularly care what images you have on your sig. The sum of all the images associated with your profile (sig, nickname) must be under 100k. anything over this is excessive. these are policy set by me, and will not change. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
