Which name is first?

Got a question for you knowledgable people. How do you know, or can you find out which singer's name is first and which is last. I know in Japanese they say the last name first. But when looking at a name, how do you know if it's first or last? For example, I find it all the time on this site with artist names. One time I'll find it one way, and another way it will be reversed. I've looked at animelyrics.com but again, I still don't know if they're correct or not. I would like to know so my iTunes list can be consistent since it's in alphabetical order of singers. Since I'm english I say the first names first, and the last name last and that's why I would want know which is which. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance. |

| Well...I think that it is correct to say the first name first and the last name last, since that you're writing it in english (Roma-ji from japanese). Even that it depends on which country you're from, the writing style (english or japanese) is what determines the order of the names. |

In Japanese, the family name is said first, then the given name. This follows the "largest to smallest" language construct for which Japanese is famous (which also happens to simulate the organization of information in the human brain, so its a good method for communication!). In English, it is the other way around, because the English are a backwards lot. On my website, it is completely random. This is due to the fact that I record the name as it is given to me. Often people try to "English-a-mify" Japanese names by swapping the order, in addition to representing the Japanese characters in Roma-ji. This is stupid and should not ever be done, in my opinion. We don't call French Toast "Pain grillé Français" (well, some might but they should be shot dead).
