Philippines "The land of the CRAB-MINDED"

Crab mentality describes a way of thinking best described by the phrase "if I can't have it, neither can you." The metaphor refers to a pot of crabs in which one tries to escape over the side, but is relentlessly pulled down by the others in the pot.

" crab mentality" - a metaphor defined as the collective effort of the many with unreasonable thinking or empty instinct to disseminate untruthful rumors or negative innuendos to bring down or cause failure to a target principal idea, society, institution or individuals. Similar to crabs void of instinct trying to cling to others pulling down the rest of the crabs in the chain back to the bottom of the bushel foiling success to escape.

People in the philippines are stated to be the world's leading country when it comes to crab mentality. The question is, why do filipino people do it? It is because of the country's limitation in oppurtunities.

The social system in the country is very uninspiring and very degrading to be in it. This is one reason why I hate being a filipino let alone living with people who rarely pull you up rather pull you down to your knees. This reminds me of the early incident in Ultra(A place in the philippines where a celebration should have been held, unfortunately someone in the crowd shouted "BOMBA"(BOMBA=Bomb) and everyone began to panic creating a stampede. The stampede was very deadly and anyone who was down on their feet was surely to be put down even more. Its like crabs gone wild or something. The result of the stampede caused 70+ deaths and hundreds of injuries. People in the phillipines sure are great!!!!

I can relate to that in the BAHAMAS, we have what is called the black crab syndrome, were only it seems that, the black crab pull each other down and the white crabs lift each other up. IM sure you get the metiphor, anyway what I do is uplift my own self, telling myself to stay focus and that I can do anything. REMEMBER that if your own family and people are pulling you down, you must push your own self and accomplish your goals. THATS the only way, such negitive mineded people will see. THAT you must be optimistic to obtaine, anything in life.

crab-mindedness is caused by group mentality. The idea that as a group you can survive better. This mentality is so ingrained into human subconcious that the groupmentality can overpowere any human idea or feeling and casn also be documaneted as the underlying force in everything. World War 1 was caused by this and for that matter so was 2. In the case of 1 the Serbians wanted an independent state, why because they were stronger as a group than as individuals. That pressure to join a group is what caused the assassination of Francis Ferdinand and the subsequent snowballing into a world war(ironicaly it was fought primarily in Europe).

In the case of World War 2 the Germans sought to band together to spread the ideal that the Aryan(sp) decendents were superior and they need to band together. As in the first WW, the subsiquent response was to band together against the mutual enemy. Germany sought to drag the other Europeans into the same despair that they were in. To do so they focused on a very limited array of people to drag down. I.e. Jewish people

There is even documented "crab-mentality" in recent history. Such is the case of mass suicides popular in cults,, the idea of the group decending as one and no one person standing above them is what drives this.

The "black-crab-syndrome" refers to the above idea that a group would rather see itself fall than to see another rise out and stand above them. This is driven by two of the strongest base emotions in humans, greed and group mentality. Those two forces combined make for one extrodinary power. At the same time however groups are seeking to further themselves, that also drives both aspects of the "black-crab-syndrome." The Black-crabs are seeking to further themselves by assimilating others of greater strength, while the white crabs are seeking to further themselves by furthering themselves, not though furthering the group. It is in this way that the white-crabs can grow at a faster rate but lack the assimilative qualities of the black-crabs, thusly rending the white-crabs into smaller groups power groups. (i.e. Bill Gates to a homeless guy) The white crabs are building small power groups(i.e. Martha Stewart), that rise above the collective black-crabs giving the illusion of a superior crab. As a whole the crab power ballance is equalling out.

As far your groin iching, get some cream or a new girlfriend.

Let me remind people that the Philippines (our country) had become a colony of Spain for more than 300 years, occupied by the Americans and Japanese (historically true) for sometime, and travellers and traders from different countries trade here, so the Philippines became a melting pot of various nations.

Naturally, values and traditions are also passed down from these mixed cultures. From my Philippine history class, it was possible that "crab mentality" was an inherited "value" (or something like that) along with several other negative traits: nepotism and the like.

Sadly, but true. It runs through our very own veins...:(

Ilocos Sur Governor, Luis "Chavit" Singson is one good heck of an overly crab-mental asshole. He used to be friends/colleagues to our former President, Joseph Ejercito Estrada... but he betrayed the friendship and told the nation about his darkest secret concerning the "jueteng scandal." He just couldn't accept the fact that a high school graduate would be elected as the official president of the Philippines.

Not that I'm in favor of ERAP, I just feel sorry for him. The nation does, and up to now, they're hoping that he'll come back. Either way, I as much as a hate our current presidential officials, I hate Gloria! She's a two-faced witch.

You cannot say that by just saying "Bomb" and immediately a stampede comes that that is what you call "Crab Mentality," Norvin-san, it is just a normal reaction to panic, especially with those people who are desperate, like those what you said.

Crab Mentality is pulling someone down who is up, just because that person is jealous or envious to that person.

A lot of that happens in the Philippines, and its root is the wrong culture of the people. That is really hard to change, since culture is rooted deep down.

In order to change it, one must be conscious about those things and try to educate the people who need change.

Sad but true, Crab Mentality is evident here in the Philippines. From classrooms to politics, you'll see people pulling others down for their own personal benefits...

To all the Filipinos here:

Do you all know the new version of Game KNB? Isn't it a prime example of Crab Mentality here in our country?

And out into the sea of infinity?

Well, yes it is. *sigh* But it's not just in the Philippines that these things happen. Crab mentality can also be seen in other countries but not as noticeable. I guess you can blame the mixed cultures that were introduced to us...

avery good example nero

in that game there are six or so contestant aiming to reach the top. so if one contestant answered correctly he/she can move on...but there is an addd twist each time you are correct you can opt to use an "atras power" meaning you can make someone go back a step if he or she is ahead of you...

so thats just it...we cant see mto be happy for our fellow men to do better than us...its like if i cant have your sucess i'll bring you down with me...i wonder why such a trait exist when we ourselves practice BAYANIHAN which is working together...just goes to show how personal gain rules our desires

ahhh well its true that my country is a crab minded country but not all filipinos are like that and theres a reason for that its maybe because people here in the philipines are tierd of suffering & rich people here are only getting rich and the poor people are always suffering

maybe if theres no corrupt politics here & good economy then maybe the crab minded people here will be reduce

like the show gamek n b? & wowowee, people there dont want to loose the players mostlikely want to earn cash to feed there family or to survive

and many filipinos dont have jobs, so people here in the philipines dont have time to sit around and wait for some miracle they always start to work and work and work until they find a job ,we filipinos are like carabaos we work hard to gain food

we have a saying here "isang kayod isang tuka" - it means that if dont work you will not eat or earn

so theres a reason why people here are crab minded people even tough many people in the philipines are christians and we all know what sharing is, but because of this problems you probobly dont want to loose

it think we filipinos think "in order to survive you must work hard" well thats a good point of view tough

Thats why many filipinos work overseas to earn big cash to give there family some benefits like clothes , shelter , food , etc.

Im still proud to be a filipino

Yup Crab mentality maybe true and is "ingrained" in our(The Philippines) culture but that does make me ashamed of being a Filipino.

I believe pinoys or a person for that matter do it for some reason not just out of a whim ,we are a third world country always beset with problems (political instabilities, natural disaster, poverty etc.)in order to survive differentiating what is socially incorrect and correct does not matter anymore.

The reality is what it is. I think we have no choice but to accept it, however that does not mean that we seat and watch. A certain culture such as crab mentality cannot be easily changed o eradicated it takes time. Sure we have all our experiences with such a person, it is our part to somehow be patient and have a broad mind even if it kills us. I know it is hard but really that is`reality all we have to do is accept it.Their is no other way of doing it.

It is a cliche but I love being a filipino those mentalities the negatives and the positives define us and sets us apart. Besides its not like it is exclusive for us pinoys.

If fate gives you lemon, try to make it into a lemonade.(dont know if it is the exact qoute =p)

*of course that is MY own opinion how i see it is. So if somehow my words offended someone I did not mean it that way. Peace. =)
