What's so great about Winry?
Link | by kirima on 2006-02-04 20:00:34
What's so great about Winry Rockbell from Fullmetal Alchemist? I don't understand what people like about her. Okay, she fixes Ed's automail. But what ELSE does she do? Apart from whine and cry, and/or beat Ed witha wrench? Some people have said, "well, she can't do much else because Ed doesn't confide in her that much." But I'd forgive her for that if she'd just GET OVER IT and stop crying. Anyway, what do you people think of her?

Well, I think she is a key to solve the mysteries of the philosopher's stone. She also wanted to know how her parents died. Its like the drama genre in the anime. She is the muse of the anime after all, I think?

Yea, I agree with Xaria. Without Winry, FMA is less interesting...

Winry is just there for the fanboys to drool over. And every anime protagonist needs a close female friend so the fans will think they'll fall in love or something.

@Euphony
I totally agree with you

Where and when has Winry ever whined? (Ooh, that's a lot of W's...) She's a close friend of Ed so, naturally, friends worry. Winry is a good person that simply wants Ed and Al to be happy. Throwing a few wrenches at them is a way of getting the point across, neh?

I'm a Winry fan myself but I've seen her as fanboy material. Other than that tubetop/jumpsuit getup, she has no fanservice scenes. But then again, I'm a girl... And I love Ed/Winry.

Besides, Winry represents the last home that Ed and Al can return to once they get back to normal.

In Manga..

Ed and Al both ask winry to marry one of them.. but she say no to both.. the reason? "Because I don't like guys shorter than me"

hehehe.. In the Manga i think Ed like Winry when they were five..

she always help them and fix Ed's automail..
i like winry for ed.. well.. i dont know why.. i just like her.. ^__^

Winry is slightly overdramatic but based on my memory she's never whined. She cares about Ed and Al, simple as that. It's only natural that she worries; they put themselves in really dangerous situations. I don't care much for Winry but still... I can't imagine an FMA without her. Even if you hate her, things would be much different in FMA without Winry. It's not like she's just another annoying female who serves no purpose... Winry fixes Ed's automail after all.

I agree with tsukiko and Euphony as well.

winry is a cool mechanic.she cares a lot for ed n al,and i think she is strong,to be left behind and hidden from everything that ed n al do all the time...i guess i like her bcoz she's not a melodrama n i hardly finds her overacting.she may not be a very significant character in the series but FMA won't be the same if she's not in it.

Oh please, give Winry a break. She is a strong female character and I don't know about you, but it makes a pleasant change. She may not be important and nor can she use Alchemy like Ed and Al but she is their best friend and the only 'family' they have left. She isn't just in there for eye candy. Winry isn't a main character but she still has enough grounding, what with her parents death and her having to face her demon *glares at Roy*. She puts Ed in his place and helps add to the drama of the whole show.

Strong female character? FMA is FULL of them! Try Liza Hawkeye (my personal favorite character), Maria Ross, Izumi Curtis...the list goes on and on. I guess, compared to these others, Winry always seemed to be the least of these, because, let's face it, she does cry A LOT. Normally crying is good in the right places, but Winry does it ALL THE TIME. But I should cut her some slack. She DOES "add color" to the series. I can't really describe what I don't like about her; she just didn't "click" with me. I'm sure there're a lotta characters like that for other people...

ROY DIDN'T DO IT!! Sorry, I had to get that out of my system. Yes, he did kill them in the anime, but NOT IN THE MANGA. I love Roy. Besides, he felt REALLY bad after it in the anime! He was gunna kill himself! Okay, getting out of Roy fangirl mode now...

I'll admit. I'm not a fan of Winry.. but I can see what role she plays in the series.. It's hard to explain from my head to the keyboard, but.. like how Izumi is their teacher, and becoming in a sense.. a mother figure.. teaching them and knocking them down when they're worng. I think Winry is the emotional part of the "family" like in the one episode where she's crying.. and saying that she was crying because neither of them would.
Eh.. I guess it make sense?
I'm a Roy fangirl. Heh.

tomorrow, you can move towards a more beautiful night..

Winry's very strong. She adds alot to the story, and is a strong force in Ed and Al's life. She connects them to their past, fixes the automail, and she whacks Ed with a wrench. Come on, how awesome is that? XD

And yes, Ed is my favourite character!

she serves as a comfort zone for ed and al...some1 whome which they can rely on....but they def. take her for granted. i think ed and winry serve more as an item in the manga, but in the series (anime) she's a reliable friend who seems to be shut out, and ignored by her closest childhood friends~!

i have nothing to say besides school is gay~!

Ahahaha. Winry. She's so cute. But, seriously... very weird. What kind of little girl likes machines so much and yet is really girly?! It's not possible.
