Well it depends for what console you want to program. Earlier consoles such as the nes, snes and I also think game boy, sega's master system and genesis all use some kind of assembler. Here is a tutorial for snes programming http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Super_NES_Programming. Now as for the newer consoles such as gamecube, ps2, xbox etc they all use higher level programming languages such as C, C++ and C# (objective-C), but you will need to get your hands on commercial compilation packages that have been specially developed for that use. Plus they are a lot more complex to program for. Its better to mess a bit around with the nes/snes as a start.

Try Turbo C programming. Sure I know that you can also create games using Turbo C I supposed. That's what our teacher said... |

C++ would be the best for games i think

Where might i get one of these assemblers? how much do they cost (minimum)? and what are the names of some of them along with what system they are for? thanks for all your help and any more is appreciated. |

now, are you programming console games or not? if you are i can't help, but if you're going after computer games, and want 3d graphics, i might reccomed a assembler/compiler known as dark basic, uses the basic programming language, but has almost unlimited potential for programmers of games

creating a game for PS1 or PS2 would require special developer software AND hardware, this isn't something you can come by easily. I'd only recommend it if you're REALLY into it and you've got some money to spend, because the only real plausible option for making PS1 games even, is to get your hands on a dev-kit, unfortunately.
