Has anyone here ever wondered why we need sleep when there is so much more in life to do? Please answer

So we can be refreshed to face thoses things in life.

I dont really know.....but that is what I think.

My sleep patterns are messed up.

Right now I am awake....have been up since 5:30am....have to get up and 5:30am the next day......it is 11:53pm right now...and still awake...

Sleep is the great healer. It is the time of day when the body heals itself from sickness and injury and allows us time rest our minds and gain strength. It is a physical process and if we didn't have it we would surely not survive. Ranger, who is home now, would tell you that no machine can run 24 hours a day without stopping. It needs to be shutdown for routine maintenance or it fails. The same with the body. Sleep is the downtime required for the living machine.

Trivia: Ranger just said that if we take a measure of the voltage in the human body we would measure between 6,000 and 50,000 volts. It takes 18,000 volts to jump from your finger to a doorknob.

Most animal species sleep, it is a very ancient biological phenomena.
Sleep helps maintain balance in the body. For example, body rebuilds damaged or stressed muscle tissue at night, and strengthens the tissue by creating more muscle protein in the damaged or stressed muscle cells. Sleep is a time for conservation of heat and energy. It would be dangerous to move about at night, lots of things to eat you and trip over. So, it makes sense for us to wait it out. Sleep also has a tremendous impact on brain health. During sleep, memories acquired during the previous day are saved to long term memory. The immune system is most active at night. (http://www.bloodph.com/news2002nov.html)

Hope that helps answer your question.

@rin: voltage is a measure of electric potential. it takes Amps (current) to power electrical equipment. Saying something is such and such volts is meaningless in terms of power, unless you also mention the current. Also, i think that trivia point is in reference to nervous tissue, not normal tissue. The electric potential between the skin cells in my hand, for example, is zero. if it were otherwise, the potential would discharge, because those cells are conductive. If you doubt that skin cells are conducive, stick your fingers on live power wires. (dont try this at home, do it at school). In fact, the majority of the energy liberated from chemical energy in our food is in the form of heat. The current produced inside a waking brain is very small, and only active as ions passing through the axon walls. No lightning bolts.

Oh dear, should I put Ranger on. He is an electrical engineer you know. He even taught me a little so I could get my ham radio license.

See, Ohms law, E=IR
Law of power P=ie
And whan you are talking abotu electircal power is that based on RMS or peak voltage.

Ranger That's all well and good when yo measure the voltage in a circuit however there is no current when yo nmeasure a space charge ot the charge on an organic body. In order to measure current or anthing else oy have to have a complete circuit, ie dischqarging yourself from a hi static state to zero.

However taking into considering the human boidies electrical resistance we can calculate a current level. However it would have no meaning since it would be measured in microamps.

G, Before I was a ranger, guide and crap my specialty was high voltage systems including power distribution and later HV ionization used to control the space charge in a room for the mfg of mocroprocessors. It's also used to keep dust down, is an addition to clean rooms and is used in the printing and agriculture industries.

You can have voltage in a room as much as 20-30kvkv or more and not need a measure of resistance or current to have it. It is called a Space Charge the original theories if which were oput together by I Daroff, B Kabaker and your truly D Ranger.

I did a lot of research in the subject and we could have one hell of a discussion. YOu have shown yourself to have a very open mind so the only thing I'll say here is religion or faith. Make sense?

Here's Rin ready for bed, It has been awhile since we have had a peaceful evening. I intend to have that now. Peace and piece.

/Ranger

uncorrected cause we have better things to do.

I think I have discovered what the source of my confusion is. It lies in the sentence "take a measure of the voltage in the human body". What does this mean? I have an image of a multi-meter with the probe ends clamped to needles shoved inside my body, which would of course show under a volt and maybe at most one milliamp.

Now, I think that you may be referring to the net charge a body can pick up by rubbing socks on the carpet in a dry room. In that case, you can acquire quite a significant charge, and not feel it, until you touch the doorknob.

Is this what was meant in the trivia note?

sorry to drag so far off topic :P

I would like to tell everyone who has a funky sleep schedule to start sleeping normally. I got rid of my akward sleep schedule and got to sleep at night and wake up in the morning like I should.

Why do I do this now, because it helps me grow taller. If you want to grow I suggest sleep right. It is while you sleep, that bones take advantage of your posture and resting period to grow. I though I was done growing so I got weird with my sleep, however I am having another growth spurt, yes!

This probaly conserns guys more, girls don't have to worry about their height as much. In fact I like little girls better, the cuteness factor goes way up. Of course I am practicaly a lolicon, so don't take my word for it.

I just want to emphasize that a good sleep schedule is good for your health.

So I should stop sleeping all together because I'm 6'3".
I want to stop growing bad

Mei: WOW! 6'3! THAT IS SO TALL!!! i want to be that tall, too....

Jomunga: you like little girls better??? cool! i know there're really cute...hehehe.... so, how tall are you now???

i always have a good sleep...zzzzz....

No you don't. Have you tried getting out of a school bus once you pass 6'? I have to duck every time, or face a fractured skull and alot of embarasment.

I like sleep too much to give it up, I also like being awake so I'm ging for a 2:1 ratio for awake:sleep. that's supossedly the healtiest time any more and you're overly rested and a chemical imbalance forms, and any less and the same occurs except at greater levels. I use a water bed so I get nice comfy nights, but i sleep on two innersprings on top of each other during the weekends for the support, cause too long in water bed is bad for your back. They also suck the heat out of your body.

Re: Sleep
Link | by Jomunga on 2006-02-01 21:52:25
Mmm. Bad for my back. Okay tonight I will sleep on a normal bed. What does sucking heat out of your body do? I don't think I have to worry about that though because my waterbed's temperature is set high.

Ahh I am jelous. I want tallness because you get such an advantage while fighting.

I havent grown at all yet but I think I am. Or maybe I just have muscle aches from the punch bag.

We sleep to get a chance to relax and rest, I supposed. Anyway I like to sleep because I don't have to work and think when I asleep.

Sleep though is a kind of our relative activity we always we do when we are tired.

I actually don't know. Most say it is needed to relax our bodies. But I've had a chance to actually NOT sleep for about a week or so, due to school reports and cram assignments.

What a very philosophical question! why we need sleep when there is so much more in life to do? Very simple yet very complex. As for my answer, I'll try it in a philosophical perspective.

We need to sleep because it is our nature to do so. It is just like this one: A shark can never become a vegetarian because it is it's nature to be a carnivore (The movie "Shark Tale" is not really possible). A human cannot fly because it is not it's nature to fly.
Is my answer too deep? That is the kind of philosophy Baruch Spinoza have (he is a philosopher in the 17th century).

In scientific perspective, we need to sleep in order to regain our body strength needed for tomorrow. We need to stop for a while, rest, and take it slow.

Everytime Ranger post i go "WoW!",anyway i have bad sleeping habits too because of work,i use to sleep on time but then it's like i can never get enough of sleep,my friend(who lives in the same house as i do) sleep less than me but he's always much more energetic,so i quit sleeping on time.I always wish i could 'repay' the sleep i 'owe',eg.if today i didn't sleep, maybe i can 'repay' that sleep i 'owe' on weekends,sigh..

Well, sleep really does find time in you, kinda like what you said "Repaying." It comes when you stop working, or just suddenly you feel sleepy during work. Sleep is a very powerful opponent.
