Link | by Akura on 2006-01-28 11:39:09
I have a horrible accent speaking japanese and I really want to fix it. Anyone have any pointers?

...Well, it would depend...
I guess listening to those Japanese tutorial CDs would help, along with anime shows. Yes, watch the original ones (with subtitles).

It's all about practice. It's not something that really can be explianed. Yeah just keep practicing.

Ah...I remember those days when I was trying to fix thick Japanese accent from my English. Unfortunately, they are still there...just a little less of them.

Anyways, the sound for Japanese tends to be more defined than in English. Try moving your lips more clearly...maybe even exaggerate in the beginning. Make sure you can say a-i-u-e-o very distinctively and clearly.

Remember, the vowels in Japanese are in this order:
a,i,u,e,o.

Well that's what it is in the dictionary. Or encyclopedia. Or Kanji translating.

Ha, I guess I could attempt to exaggerate in my beginning-to-talk steps. I find it quite intimidating to speak Japanese ESPECIALLY to someone who is japanese. I'm chinese and I still can't build up the courage to speak proper chinese in front of my parents. Then again, I could keep trying. Thank you.

Yeah, that's a pretty hard thing to overcome...
What I did was lock myself up in my house and listen to nothing but Japanese for days... After a while, my brain wrapped itself around the Japanese accent..
I think if you know how Japanese should sound like, then you can imitate it. Like the people before me have said, practice. You can do it when there's no one else around.
My accent got better just by imitating my favourite anime characters and Japanese singers. ♪(^-^)♪ じゃぁ、頑張ってね!!

then again, i think the solution here is to "improve" the accent rather than to "fix" it. why, because it's rather hard to do the latter. usually a foreigner still speaks japanese with a somewhat-distinguishable accent (ask the native speakers, they can tell) even after living in japan for many many years. well UNLESS, the foreigner grew up in japan, thats another story.

there are times when you can "fix" an accent, and there are times where you can "improve it" Best way is to have a native speaker tell you and practice it.

I agree with the fact that rather than fix, it's improve. In my case, I used Anime as a starter - it's actually partially where the interest started for me...the rest was interest in languages. English pronunciation helpers never helped, they could mess you up every once in a while.

Take any Anime you want and try to catch the main sounds: a, e, u, i, o - from these you can form the rest: ka, ke, ku, ki, ko for example. You need to remember that Japanese doesn't have C's, only Ch-'s and that L's become rolled r's (which is known by most people). Also, when attempting Japanese Pronunciation, don't slur the R's if you convert them from L's, unless you're fluent in the accent.

The difference in accents, in most cases, is the thickness of the pronunciation and where the stress is in a certain word.

The only way to adapt to any new accent is by listening to it when it is used and making a note of its stress points.

In comparison to Chinese, Japanese seems to have a little less Fluidity if you listen to it. It's easy to catch the accent because of this. You can catch the syllables easily. Wa-ta-shi wa ___ ___ de-(su).

By breaking up a sentence you hear, you can try to catch the vowel pronunciation. Unlike English, which has quite a few ways to pronounce the one letter 'a' and many exceptions that follow (a in 'am' is pronounced differently than a in 'are'), Japanese has only the 'ah' sound. This makes things a lot easier, actually!

So keep to Anime, if you can find tapes/cd's try them, and practice. You'll get there!

In order to get rid of the accent is simple, to use japanese as much as possible, preferably to the ones who is native speaker, so it allows u to listen to wat it sounds like, and also they can fix it up for ya.

Try to get ride of as much usage of english, or ur 1st language as possible. That will be one of the ways to fix ur accent. If u r before puberty, the chances r very very, very high, but if ur already an adult, try, there is still a possibility.
