The short answer is maybe.

If you install windows without reformating the drive you can save all of your data and programs while using a fresh installation of windows. Depending on the type of virus, you might fix the problem this way, but chances are that the virus will just continue to give you problems.

If you install windows with a complete fresh restart, for example reformating the hard drive, then the virus will be gone.

If you have multiple drives, and the virus resides on those drives, the virus might come back again.

You should start by using the emergicy (sp) boot disks that the antivirus program made for you, if you did make them.

There are fixes. If you can virus scan you computer with an antivirus (like norton) the program might be able to fix the problem for you, as long as the virus definitions are up to date. At the very least it will tell you the name or the type of virus. With this information, you can do research on how to remove that virus.

Another fix is to remove the drive from that computer, and intall it onto another as a secondary drive. you then us the other computer (assuming it has up to date antivirus) to scan the infected drive. As long as the infected drive is NOT USED by the other computer other than the antivirus program, there is little chance of cross contamination.

I hope this helps...

What is the exact error message? Does it occure when you boot up? or after windows boots?

I have seen Windows corrupt system files on it's own before, and the fix is not that bad, especiall if you know dos commands. It looks like booting off of the windows disk and using repair maight work.

Does it pop up whenever you're online? I've been getting an "error" message everytime I go online about my registry having "serious system errors that may cause my computer to crash". It's in a normal netsend like window (it isn't netsend though) and says to go to such-and-such a website to download the proper scanner software to fix your registry.

This is a load of b***s***.
It is a SCAM.
Do not do what it tells you. Sure, there may be a few small registry errors on your computer (chances are, there are) but 99.9% of the time they're tiny construities that don't harm your computer at all (like the add/remove programs list may still include programs on the list that you uninstalled a while back, little stuff that doesn't do anything).
The only harm things like those do is eat up about 12k of HD space per little construity, nothing worth paying 39.95 for in other words.

Then that's because they sent a "spiker" as I call them. Esentially it causes your computer to lock up (it's got something to do with caching data to some wierd sector....I don't know all about it since once a computer freezes it's kind of hard to analyze.)
It's completely illegal (just as much as creating viruses), but with the way it works it's practically impossible to catch.

It's sometimes used by companies to make people believe something really is wrong so you think you need to do what it tells you. Using Norton Antivirus 2004 (or later) with Internet Security should protect you from the freezing part.
It works fine before the message appears right? Only after it freezes?

^That's what I would do. You probably have some kind of malware on your computer. This is optional if you want to do it. Go Here Look down the list where you see "Official Downloads" and download "HijackThis"

After you open the zip folder, you MUST drag it to another location such as your C: drive location or your "my documents" foler, which ever you prefer. The icon will change after you drag it to your new location.

Then open up HijacThis and click on scan. When the scan is done, click on "save log" After you saved your log, go locate the file that you saved and copy "EVERYTHING" then come back here and post up your log file so I can check it.

Again this is optional, if you're up to it just do it. If not then, try your way :)
