Ethernet card problems
Link | by Painless on 2006-01-03 16:13:56
Though some say it could be a hardware problem, i doubt it.
My ethernet card cuts down every... let say, 30-40 minutes, and i have to unplug/plug the cord to get it to work again, doesn't not matter if its cord or power switch. So thats why i say it's something wrong with my driver, in fact, I DON'T HAVE one!! When I installed it like that it worked, so I didn't mess around with it, and now I come back from a ski trip and its like that, couldn't find my driver CD, so don't tell me to try installing it, tried unplugging and card itself and switching slots, tried resetting the modem, router, and the hub, no go. Is there any other way?

When you say it cuts down, do you mean it drops the connection completely or just some part of the connection? I assume that you are basing your connection with your router on your state of internet access. After it cuts out on you, can you access any other computers on your network? Can you ping the router and get a response? If you don't know how to ping your router, try clicking run in the start menu and typing "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" where you actually put the IP address of your router (probably 192.168.0.1 by default). You know if it is successful if it gives times (in milliseconds) for the three responses. A failed ping will give a "connection timed out" or something like that.

30-40 minutes sounds like me as a dhcp-timeout, and if the problem is that your can't renew your ip it is absolutely a software problem.

I asume you are using a OS built on Windows NT.

Some things to try:
- Check if the time the connection goes down is the some time you lose your dhcp-leach.

- Check if you can renew the ip manuelly by typing "ipconfig /renew" in a terminal emulator.

- Check if the interface is still up by typing "ipconfig" in a terminal emulator. or check it in the Controll Panel.

Also, if you know from what brand your ethernet card is, you can just visit the brands webpage.
Usually under Support they have the drivers of their hardware products for download.
