Perhaps not considering the fact that Penguins uses 2x as much energy just to walk compared to any land animal

What about ducks?
Why do everyone always overlook ducks?
Why penguins?
whats with penguins that attract so much attention?
Are ducks and penguins really so dissimilar?

Ducks do fly don't they?

It's because penguins don't fly that they get attention.

what about chickens? Chickens are quite often overlooked too.
I dunno. but if you happened to ask any preschool kid at where i live, they would say that chickens can't fly. errrrrrrr... not that they've met any live chickens or anything. but if i remembered correctly, it's farm chickens that can't fly.

as for the penguin question, who knows? maybe couple o' thousand of years ago, they used to fly.

Considering the fact that they evolved to cope with an antarctic climate, they've never really needed to fly. There are no insects to eat in Antarctica, there are no trees in Antarctica. Put bluntly, there is nowhere to fly to in Antarctica. They evolved wings that help them swim to catch fish.

I am absolutly sure that penguins have never flied.

why would penguins 'evolve' wings? If they didn't have wings before, what did they have, hands? well, to answer people who ask why the duck and chicken and maybe whatever else were overlooked--- let's all face it, penguins are cute and adorable!!! chickens and ducks too, but penguins are rare, I guess... and, people like them especially since in cartoons, they are always depicted as cute, friendly-looking creatures.. ^^

penguins dont fly but their ancestors sure as hell did!
they do have wings, and feathers, lay eggs, and therefore are BIRDS.
all birds are descendant from some group of ancient flying creatures.

I thought birds were descendent from dinosaurs(just looking at their feet!!!) ^^

Obviously, the wings can never lift such body with great weight; nay strong framework of bones in the wings to guide them. If you notice, most birds that fly have long and flexible wings, unlike in the case with Penguins, chicken, ducks, etc.

Penguins adapt to their environment now, so they need not to fly. Plus the fact that they're already south for winter. And dating way back before, probably their ancestors used to fly. And gradually, as the wings were not primarily used, it deteriorated as time passed by. And still deteriorates up to now. Then maybe in the near future, we'll see Penguins almost without wings! XD Theory of Evolution explains such occurrences.

Biology major here. =) Though I agree that penguins are really cute. Anyways... Chiyo-chan in penguin suit! Kakoi!!! ^_^

YES, only b/c penguins are the BEST.

Haha, but truthfully, probably. However, they probably needed the skill to swim more than fly in the artic, and lost that ability over time...

@Rukia-san
Ducks can fly... so could chickens, until they were domesticated, better examples would've been the ostrich, Dodo, or Kiwi (which i think was almost wingless).

Truth is, penguins probably can't fly because the antarctic climate of freezing cold and strong winds are actually too great of a pressure for most animals to fly, they'll be blown away if they get 50 meters off the ground.

I'll eat you.

Ah... wild ducks, geese 'n whatnot; they fly north.

Re: Did penguins once fly?

South...... they fly south for the winter, unless you're talking about the southern hemisphere, then I guess they would fly north.
