How do you write Adam in Hiragana?
Link | by on 2005-12-13 14:36:47
I've been recently looking into a research project I have to have done tomorrow, and I decided I should write my name in Hiragana using calligraphy. Now, I have not studied it at all, all I have seen is a table with the basics of it. So far, and please tell me if i'm right or wrong on this, my name in Japanese is "Adamu", picked apart A-da-mu.

Now, I have two versions I have found and pieced together for my name. They are below.

1) あだむ

2) アダム

アッダム A-dam (short pause after a)
アーダム Aadam (long a)
アダム Adam (normal no stress)

Depending on how you pronounce it. Either way it would be written in katakana and not hiragana.

Hmm, so is there any way to write it in hiragana? I'm just wondering. Plus does my first example, あだむ, mean anything?

In Hiragana あだむ (あっだダム、ああだむ)would be how you spell it. But foreign names/words really should be written in katakana to be correct.

Oh, okay, thank you very much.

I was doing a research project on Japanese calligraphy, unfortunately I could not find enough information on one calligrapher, so I switched over to Chinese calligraphy. I don't like it as much as Japanese.

Yes, in my opinion, I rather write in hiragana or katakana any day than writing in kanji.

You can wirte it in hiragana. Isn't it a foreign word though.

You should write it in katakana ^_^

アダム is the "accepted" spelling of Adam. However, you can translate Adam into English then translate that into Japanese and come up with a version in kanji. Not "official" of course, but fun.
Adam = "red earth" (what the first man was made of), "red earth" in japanese could be said a number of ways, but there is a place name 丹土 (tando) which means red earth, so there is a good Japanese name already ^^

Another way to make non-Japanese names into kanji is to use the sounds eg あ,だ,む. This is the basis of spelling many ethnic Japanese names. You basically look at kanji that have the sound reading for each syllable, or pair of syllables, picking kanji that go together to make a nice meaning, and string them together. Unfortunately む is traditionaly a female name ending, so it's not much good for Adam.

I'm pretty sure this was solved a long time ago.

That sounds like a fascinating idea, attempting to write your name in Hiragana using calligraphy, especially with such limited prior exposure to the script! \"Adamu\" is indeed a reasonable approximation of your name in Japanese, as you\'ve broken it down correctly. It\'s always fun to explore new aspects of a language and culture.By the way, if you\'d like to make this endeavor less stressful and more enjoyable, here\'s a useful article I came across with tips on reducing stress while studying https://www.terristeffes.com/2022/06/ways-to-decrease-stress-while-studying.html . It might come in handy, not just for your calligraphy project, but for your overall study experience as well. Best of luck with your research project and your Hiragana adventure!
