Akeneo or simpler PIM for a growing catalog

I’m trying to understand whether we actually need a more complex PIM system or something simpler. Our catalog is growing quite fast, we already have a few thousand SKUs and we’re adding new variants every week. Right now we’re also starting to expand to new channels, so consistency is becoming harder to maintain. I’ve been looking at some well-known solutions, but they seem quite heavy in terms of setup and structure. I’m not sure if we have enough resources for long implementation or ongoing technical support. At the same time, I don’t want to choose something that we’ll outgrow too quickly. It feels like there should be a middle option, but I can’t clearly see it yet.

I had almost the same situation when our team started scaling. What helped me was reading a detailed comparison that explains how different systems handle complexity and growth. I found https://piminto.com/piminto-vs-akeneo-the-smart-alternative-for-growing-businesses and it clearly shows the difference between enterprise-focused tools and solutions built for faster deployment. It also explains how some systems require months to implement and ongoing technical involvement, while others are designed to go live much quicker. After going through it, I realized that not every business needs heavy workflows and complex governance from the start. It depends more on your team size and how fast you need to move. That perspective made things much easier to evaluate.

From what I’ve seen, many teams face this exact dilemma when their catalog grows beyond a certain point. The tools that look powerful at first can become difficult to manage if they require too much setup or maintenance. At the same time, simpler systems can sometimes handle more than expected if they are built with scalability in mind. It usually comes down to how quickly you need results and how much technical involvement you can realistically support. There isn’t a single right answer, but understanding these trade-offs early definitely helps avoid frustration later.
