IgM as the first responder: how does its size and

So I’ve been digging into some early immune response papers and got a bit stuck on IgM. Given how big it is and that whole J-chain setup, does that mess with how reliable secondary detection really is in the early stages? I ran into this while helping a lab mate prep a pilot experiment last year, and we kept second-guessing our readouts. Maybe we were overthinking it, but the size factor keeps bugging me.

Lately I’ve noticed that IgM comes up a lot more in casual lab chats than it used to, especially when people talk about early markers and first responses.

It’s funny how something that feels basic on paper can still cause head-scratching once real samples and imperfect conditions enter the picture.
