How to find your own unique look while dressing st

Last year I got invited to a local fantasy fair, and the theme was “Victorian with a twist.” Naturally, I thought about going steampunk, but when I started putting an outfit together, everything looked either too simple or way too theatrical. I wanted something that felt like me but still fit the theme. In the end, I wore a simple blouse with a corset and some boots, but I knew it could’ve been much more creative. Has anyone here figured out how to create a unique steampunk look without feeling like you’re just copying someone else’s costume?

I totally get that feeling. When I was preparing for my first steampunk event, I didn’t want to look like I had just ordered a full set online and called it a day. What helped was focusing on personal touches — like adding jewelry I already owned, or modifying jackets with brass buttons and patches. I found this article on steampunk style dress to impress, and it gave me some inspiration on mixing modern clothes with classic steampunk elements. My favorite combo ended up being a velvet blazer with leather straps and a mini top hat, which felt unique but still clearly steampunk.

I’ve never dressed in steampunk fashion myself, but I remember seeing a street performance where the whole band wore variations of it. What caught my eye was how different each outfit looked, even though they clearly shared the same theme. One musician had a long coat and goggles, another wore suspenders with a bowler hat, and another just added gear-shaped pins to their clothes. It made me realize the style leaves a lot of room for creativity, which is probably why people enjoy it so much.
