Learning

So i wanna learn Japanese. I'm desperate ok? My friend lent me the whole Rk episodes and OAVs But it was ALL IN JAP. So the nut i am...I watched each episode...at the same time not understanding ANYTHING...then i had to go to this other site and get EACH episode translation...Man...it sucked....but worth it. Is there like a free japanese tutorial place where they teach you how to actually "say" Jap words instead of those crappy english people who cant pronounce properly -on the web? My library has no books...only weird egyptian heiroglyphics and weird dead language like latin....*disgusted* |

does your school have a foreign exchange program to japan? if so, do that. then you can learn from a real japanese teacher. as far as pronunciation goes, just mimic your favorite anime character when you watch anime. thats how i learned my accent which is better than most. if you pay attention and actually care about pronunciation, all it takes is practice and patience. |

Next year, I'm taking a class at a college. Keep in mind, it takes about four years to become even close to fluent, so...

Re: Learning

My advice.. don't unless you are a masochist :p Japanese is an insanely difficult language to learn, not something you try on a whim to understand anime better. Trust me, that probably won't be enough motivation. I've found that trying to learn a foreign language from a textbook/audio cds don't work well, taking an actual class where you can converse face to face is the only way |
Re: Learning

Yup that's right, the cds or those getting-started-with-japanese textbooks don't work as good as taking classes

Re: Learning

The screwy thing is...i chose French for one of my electives at school instead of Jap...coz THen i didnt know anything about ANIME....humph...so now..yeah..actually i borrowed my friend's Jap book which teaches you to write all those hiragana and kanji (?!) and stuff...then im thinking of buying a jap-eng dictionary...and ill progress from there! Btw the book is called OHAYOO If anyone know it, then is it a good place to start? |

http://physics.uwyo.edu/~brent/jal/jal-home.htm nice site. |
Re: Learning

Ohayoo means good morning yeah guess thats good place to start but introduction would be better. haha yeah i find learning from a book and audio tape is the worst way, u need to learn from a jap teacher, becuase of that i didn't find japanese hard at all, i'm good pronounciator and i've only taken the class for one year. now i had to move to korea and i'm learning from a book, ulgh, it's hard i'll jus have to take the rest in college. man i'll tell u though japanese is much easier than french. hate my french class.the only thing i hate in japanese is kanji grrrr kanji |
Re: Learning

Omgness...."mirai" you're sooo cool!...I cant believe it... I quote thee: "and now I'm moving to Korea"....omgness...you sound like one of those travel-freaks that been everywhere...I wanna go everywhere!!! Jap IS supposedly easier than French...(from my friends opinions)...dunno why I'm doing French...I really hate all the futur proche and aulixiary and past tense and stuff!!! But apparently er...APPARENTLY...I have this voice that sounds Japanese...so the only trouble I really have in learning Japanese right now is I CANT MEMORISE THE FREAKIN' WORDS!!!Hiragana is soo cool though.I'm such a bad person though...I have a history of inconsistency...So i was just wondering...FOr any one who is LISTENING... How long exactly does it take to learn a language? ! AND HOW DO I COMMIT!!...and dont say, you have to believe in yourself and love the language and all...right now...I'm trying to uhmm...read my Jap exercise book every day (or every second day)for half an hour (max...come on) so I can get the characters in my head. Am I wasting my efforts?! or just have too crap a memory? Wait...I can answr that...its both. |
Re: Learning

how long to learn japanese...... to speak and listen...maybe 2 years to be fairly well to read and write.... for hiragana and katakna maybe 6 months (to be able to read at the good pace) to learn...2 months. i had to learn both in 6 weeks >.< as for kanji... its a never ending self study...... lol to be able to read most things need basic 500 then after that, you're beginning to get into manga and magazines ok. up to about 800 is cool, its just the different compunds using those 800 that makes ur vocab more varied therefore easier to read things ^_^ ganbatte! |

hiragana and katakana can be learned in two weeks if your motivated and have all day to practice. kanji, on the other hand.... i think there was like ONE old dude who knew MOST of the official japanese kanji, but he died or something.... so now nobody alive knows ALL of them. |

Re: Learning

hiragana and katakana is not a problem, but kanji is s**k. i know many kanji's meaning since it is same as Chinese but when it comes to pronunciation for kanji, i get headache. i'll have to go through dictionary. however, people who know many kinds of Chinese dialect would help in kanji pronunciation because some of it are exactly same! hwaa hahaha, how lucky i m as a chinese who knows many languege.

it helps if you know korean too (like me). some of the grammar and the vocabulary is real similar. (i.e. the word for promise - yakusoku[jap] and yaksok[kor]) but it doesnt help in the kanji too much, although it is somewhat used in the korean language. |
Re: Learning

I like to learn Kanji. But I don't understand, which logic use Japs in words building. Some words for me so mysterious... Does anyone know some good Jiten(dictionary of words)? |
Re: Learning

Have you tried www.japanese-online.com? It only takes you so far but there are audio samples available for all of the native words spoken by native Japanese speakers. I recommend it if you haven't seen it already. As for self-tuition, I've been learning on my own with books and audio cds for a while now and I've found them of great use. In short, I have no problem with teaching myself. |
Re: Learning

I have a book called "Genki" and it has a CD, but I haven't used it in awhile (not enough time). It's pretty good. There's also a site called the Japanese page. Perhaps there's a college summer program near you that you could go to. I'm sorry, but I'm probably not being much help. By the way, what's wrong with Latin? I've been taking it for four years, and it's not horrible. If you get into the upper levels (like Level 4), you can read cool passages about things like the Druids. @__@ Druids...
