I think it was Tetsuwan Atomu (Astro Boy).

Hmm...good question. But I would go with Studio Toei which screened the first anime feature film "The Tale of the White Serpent" in 1958. And I believe the first anime TV show was screened by Studio Otogi. Not sure of the name in 1962. And then Osamu Tezuka (creator of Astro Boy) formed him own studio and released Tetsuwan Atomu (Astro Boy) and that started the anime craze. . ....I think that answers your question. Oh I know this one, it was in a quizzy type thingy to test your anime knowledge on About.com or something like that... the answer is Astro Boy was the first ever anime... good question by the way... (how I knew the answer I'm not quite sure... must've saw it somewhere before that as well.. LoL)

fools, fear my knowledge, Astro Boy was the first "Widely Popular and Well Known" anime, but not the first!, are you ready? The First Anime IS (drum roll): Osamu Tezuka's Rendition of Betty Boop 1960, he redrew betty boop over and over again to learn the secrets of animation, infact, some of the really old betty boops are done by him (like 4 seconds)
