'Sou' question

Can anyone tell me the difference (and proper usage) of sou desu ne, sou desu ka, sou deshou ka, and sou ka? They all look the same to me, but the usage varies, I think. @_@ confused... @_@

Well my japanese are still bad, but i think i have the idea what it means.. XD i think that sou ka and sou desu ka is the same, except that sou desu ka is more formal for saying "I see". never used sou ka before except hearing it from anime. and sou desu ne is like your agreeing with the other speaker.. somebody wanna correct me? XD never heard of sou deshou ka. |

If you were to literally translate each of those phrases, it'd go something like: Sou ka = I see ('informal' in that it's everyday language) Sou desu ne = Isn't it? (agreement; rhetorical question) Sou deshou ka = Is that so? (some level of indifference or perhaps disagreement) Sou desu ka is probably the most generic, it could mean any of the above depending on context/intonation. In saying all of this, keep in mind that in everyday Japanese you could get away with interchanging most of these phrases to mean the same thing (as is often the case in Japanese...). |
