Can you really judge an anime from just 1 Episode?
Link | by EmmJay on 2005-09-02 10:37:03
There's just so much great shows out there that are so over looked because of first impression that we miss the part where it gets better halfway through. If we don't see what we like in the particular anime during the first episode we quickly move on to the next series.
T-T --> I admit I'm part of this guilty party...but after forcing myself on watching this one anime in particular because there was nothing left to watch i was shocked that i actually enjoyed it after swearing off the show in the first episode!
...But theres still some real bad ones out there and it get's so annoying having to sit and endure watching it only to realize that it was really that bad, and a waste of time.
(sigh)...so that's why I ask Can you really judge an anime from just 1 episode?

well, this depends. some anime has crappy starts like MAR. i find it rather crappy but the story tends to get better in the middle. Bleach, the start of the anime is so so so different in the level of action when compared to the later episodes in bout 28 onwards. for me, i do not usually judge animes with jus 1 episodes. i would download at least 5-8 episodes of the anime series and watch them all. only after which will i make a decision on whether i would continue. (I continued every single anime i downloaded, so u can haf a rough idea how lag my com is... -.-'').

For me no because fooly cooly is pretty confusing to alot of people and the first episode alone is wierd to alot but its because they don't understand.Even shows that you just hate and can judge is probably good because its an anime it needs time to tart developing into becoming good.Besides pokemon, and yugioh i hate them i hope they burn in *ooh bad word*lol

I agree with some of the peoples below. You can't really judge an anime based on just the 1st episode. Maybe that episode wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but hey give that anime a chance and watch a few episodes then make your judgement.

I would just say no. At least try to watch like 3 episodes. By the first one, you can already tell if it's interesting and the 2nd will verify that. The third episode tells you if you should continue watchin the story or not. Animes like Fullmetal Alchemist had slow starts (Which I hate) but then it get VERY interesting later on in the story. Whereas animes like Naruto had a average quick start that caught my attention but then as the story progresses, the anime gets less and less interesting for me. So I say just watch at least 3 episodes.

i would say no.usually we will try to know at least the summary of an anime b4 we ever start watching it.1
ep cannot tell much about the story, i agree with at least 3-5 episodes. hagaren starts to be really interesting to me after around the 8 episodes..so don judge too quickly.

Maybe not, since I get thrilled at about....eps 5-10?
Because maybe first eps usually suck .Like the one in hunter x hunter where we get to see only Gon , trying to catch this monster fish , and looking for his dad , it was just boring.

But if its A big screen movie , like naruto the movie , you woukd definitely get tempted to watch the entire episode. This happened to me

Life starts simply , why change them?

The answer will vary because the first epi is normally the intro so u cant really tell much by the first glance. However, there are exeptions, if the first epi is already so bad that it makes u vomit then u should stop right away or continue a few epi to varify whether its good or not. I also think that first epi until some part of the anime tend to be slow/boring because the main character tends to be weak until he/she aquires new power and only then the show spices up.

Nope. I usually wait until I saw at least the fifth episode until I make a judgment. SOmetimes, the intro is so crappy and nothing ever really happens except that you know the name of the characters, but then in the latter episodes, things start to get interesting. I say give them a chance to prove themselves, then if you don't like it, dump it.

not really...

i actually find the story interesting when... "the plot thickens"... so to speak...

or like in comedies... when the show actually amuses me

(i also remember that "Cursed" episode from 2x2 Shinobuden... they actually made fun of Degrading art from animated series...)

I normally give shows a good chance. I love the plot of a story & that is the main thing that draws me to the show at first. & I have been guilty of saying no after one episode. That was only b/c it had no real plot showing & was stupid to me. But there are alot of people who liked it. It just wasn't for me. I think it was called something like "High School Cronicles" or something. Besides that how I have always give shows atleast three episodes chance.

Can you really judge an anime from just 1 episode?
The best way to judge an anime is to watch it from the beginning to the end. However, what would be the point of watching an Anime that is boring or bad just hoping it picks up, afterall we watch anime to have fun, not bore ourselfes to death. That's why I only saw the first 2 episodes of Kiddy Grade, and that I stopped watchin Naruto because it has become tiresome.

I'm still a little up in the air on this one. The classic example with me was Yu Yu Hakusho...I saw one episode and said, "oh, another stupid shonen jump..." Now, of course, I not only love YYH but also every other SJ I've ever read/watched...The same thing happened to me with Boogiepop Phantom, Serial Experiments Lain, Fullmetal Alchemist...all of my favorites, basically. But, it does seem logical that you COULD judge by one episode. It just hasn't worked for me yet. ^-^
