Is there racial discrimination is animes now?
|
Im not racist to any race except hindu's i think well this is just to point out something. There used to be only japanese people in anime but they started to bring in white people like in NARUTO i think? Then, Black people like the Caiopera user in SCHOOL RUMBLE, then its chinese people e.x. CARDCAPTOR SAKURA which Syaoran Lee is Chinese, and in TSUBASA CHRONICLE that had the chinese dimension, and there is also Indians like in STREET FIGHTER named Dhalsim. so when are the korean people like me ever going to come out?? I know that they have korean people in japanese games like TEKKEN 5 and DOA something. Any comments? |

Well, G Gundam tends to play on stereotypes to a certain extent. Like have the Canadian Gundam to be a lumberjack, the Mexican Gundam have a pancho and burrero and so on. If you want racist, read the Ringu ni Kakero manga. It was written by Kuramada Masami (the creator of Saint Seiya) in the last 70s. It is racist to the max. It actually calls black people niggers, the characters fight members of the KKK, Germans are portayed as Nazis, Italians as Mafia men and so on.

If there is rascism, I don't think it's intentional. For instance, if I had to write a book, I wouldn't go out of my way to include characters of every race--that would just be overly politically correct and get in the way of the story. As to your question about Koreans, there is anime and manga set in Korea, or with Korean characters. The only example I can remember clearly right now is Kim from RahXephon--she's Korean. I know there are others but I didn't watch any of them, just heard about them, so I don't remember the names. Hope I helped. |

I don't know if it's intentional, but I'm pretty sure Kuramada-sensei didn't know what he was doing with Ringu ni Kakero. With Germans portrayed as remanants of the Nazi party, don't expect it to be licenced in Germany ever. Especially when Saint Seiya was popular throughout Europe (specifically France). Other Korean characters I can think of are Kim Kaphwan from the Fatal Fury oav and the movie. I know in j-dorama a lot of actors from Korea have been making it big.

i think if there is any racism in anime, it is true regrettable. i personally hope that anime will become a tie that unify us, there is no difference between white and black guy, blue and brown eyed guy, blonde haired and black haired guy. If we like anime let us unify, and be equal. i hope anime will not be used as an instrument to support racism, neither it contents racism. but if this happens i am most disgraced. gomennasai. btw, ParaParaJMo. i dind't know that saint seiya is very popular in france. i bought a copy of dvd game "saint seiya-chapter sanctuary", i played it, and i heard the voice is dubbed in French languange. i'm confused, why it had to french languange, its a japanese anime, ne? but now i think i found the answer, perhaps because french people like saint seiya much, they made saint seiya game, and it was dubbed in french languange. anyway that is only my thought, at least that's what i thought.
God's in his heaven. All's right with the world.

Yeah, and a guy in France tried to sing the Saint Seiya theme on their version to American Idol. Anyway, all of you guys should try to get Ringu ni Kakero. The racism in that makes a good Chappelle skit if I say so myself.

lolz, they don't tend to make racial distinction let alone racial discrimination. Most of the animes have white-skinned characters, some with 'human' hair color and others with bizzarre hair styles and colors that are genetically impossible. It's one race to me when I watch anime lolz. In rare instances do you have race distinction apparent. ie: Chocolove of SHaman KIng, the gundam pilots of Gundam Wing, Vampire HUnter D. |

This is just an outsider's guess, but I think one of the reasons for the appearent 'discrimination' is that forigners are interesting. Korea may just be too closely associated to be interesting; how many Canadians do you see in American movies (Well, actually, I don't know if that analogy works, there could just be tons of Canadians in American movies and I just can't tell the difference. Though really, you could probably apply the same argument to anime... whatever)? People from far away are interesting, and the more the cultures vary, the more this is so. As a side note, much as China holds some interest, at least in most animes I've seen if anything actually happens in China it happens in Hong Kong, which is interesting enough of a place on it's own. Oh, and it's held by some (and it does make sense) that origonally the gaint eyes and technicolor hair of classic anime was making fun of americans in the first place, in which case it's not really a question of "bringing white people in", because they were being made fun of already. Mind, theres always going to be racism somewhere; that's just one of the faults of humanity.

Man, seeing racism (not comedic racism, serious steriotype racism), especially today is just sickening. It's just gives angry retards with ego complexes another excuse to point fingers and start wars. I really wish people would stop viewing other people by their outside appearance and start actually seeing other people's personality instead, just like andreyev said there is no difference between white and black guy, blue and brown eyed guy, blonde haired and black haired guy. We are all basically the same even though we may appear different, due to our natural biological adjustment to our surroundings, it's just that each different culture has based their way of life according to said surroundings, so naturally, differences have to be expected among people. In the end though we are all people through and through. After all, a bullet sounds the same in every language.
You need a reason to be sad. You don't need a reason to be happy. The secret to happiness is to face the fact that the world is horrible.

I think there is partial discrimination in some anime. Like Dragonball z, the black characters (minus Uubu have overly sized big lips) Other that that lately in newer anime I haven't seen any discrimination. |

even if they have a sincere interest and respect for non-japanese cultures/peoples, a lot of japanese animators know little about these groups and, unfortunately, end up drawing their information from common stereotypes and the media. at the same time, plenty of anime present a pro-japanese, anti-everyone-else (or better-than-everyone-else) ideology. some of them use more than just physical stereotypes - they do it more covertly, such as in gits: sac and r.o.d. ova where u.s. imperialism makes the americans look incompetent or like complete dicks. (not all americans are like that - just the bushites!) @ skinny chouji, i don't agree that "there used to be only japanese people in anime". just about every anime from world masterpiece theater, the first of which was released in 1969, featured european characters. (they were based on western novels/stories.) the late '70s had rose of versailles with its all european cast. macross had roy focker. the main character of legend of the galactic heroes, yang wenli, was chinese. master keaton is only half japanese. and there's plenty of other older anime that featured non-japanese characters. and another anime with koreans - and shown in a fair light - is hikaru no go. |

Well, yes there's some. But so what? It's all over every were else. I think the best thing to do Is ignore it. There just idiot's who are as some people said looking for any reason they can't to point fingers at others and blame them for things. |
