as far as I know, it doesn't mean anything. it's just an ending of a sentence when you're speaking politely.

Well... in my class it says that it menas "it is" literally. Its for pretty much when you want the sentence to start with It is or are stating something or whatnot >_>

wow....lol don't confuse the poor child.

yeah it's just a polite ending. Most times it's just pronounced des and the u is not said or is very slightly whispered. the desu thing is a feminine trait(if you pay attention some guys will even say it in anime lol).

anywho, just a polite ending. and since japan is a very formal population you'll hear it alot and will use it alot when just meeting people.

If you are japanese you must speak to me for I am always trying to learn new things!

On a random Japanese handbook: DESU is the state-of-being verb in Japanese. It means "is" or "are".

Since verbs are usually found at the end of a sentence, DESU what we usually see.

I believe it's not just a polite ending. It's a polite form of the verb "is", but that doesn't mean you could put it at the end of every sentence.

Hope that helps ^^

MEH no one said i had to go in detail. if you have it your way as meaning "is" or "are"

then a sentance like nani ka

couldnt translated to what is it because there's no desu. And that would just confuse an american speaker.

yes there's places to put it and alot of times you can latch it on at the end(unless there's ka/?) but obvouisly soemtimes you can't.

He would have to undertand structure in the first place to know all that and i think a polite ending is vague enough to give me an idea what what it is.

If you are japanese you must speak to me for I am always trying to learn new things!

Desu is just to confirm an answer. like say someone asks you "onamae wa?" (ur name?) Ud reply "racklefracklewateverurnameis desu" (its racklefracklewateverurnameis) lol if someone really had that kinda name... poor japanese person would get so confused LOLerskates.

Desu has no meaning in english, It is a equalizer, This is That, could also be expressed as This = That. Desu is the =. It is used often as a polite ending, such as 見たいです!(Mitai desu) I want to see! or じゃないですか?(Janai desu ka? while you could upgrade Janai to Ja arimasen, de wa nai or de wa arimasen, they often use Janai desu ka to mean , "Is it different?"

although it is also put on the end of simple IS statments. It's impolite form is Da. =)

desu is a termination used to confirm something you are saying: watashi wa amerika-jin desu (I`m american)you may be able to see it as desu ka but that is used to make aquestion: anata wa furatsu-jin desu ka?(are tou french?)

Hmm...I always thought it was フランス人.

Anyways, just raising a minor point on the pronunciation of desu. My Japanese teacher used to say that clearly saying the -su at the end just means that :

1. You think that you're cute.

2. Or you're just trying to be cute.

Guess that's why you mostly see girls in animes saying it like that.

So use with caution! :p

4) You dont realize that the u IS pronounced, it is just very soft, Kinda like the H is in spanish. when words end with u it is often like this, Also with i.

Such as Yoshi (Pronounced like, Yosh) which means, "I got it", or "I did it".

i thought its just an extra word, like an effect or something :/ makes it sound like a fullstop to a sentence.

"desu" is just added to end a sentence, much like giving the sentence a smooth end. anyways, there are other alternatives for it, if youdon't like using "desu".. take your pick! ~_^

the word desu implies is/affirmative(Not literally ill give an example)
its used after Nouns and adjectives to i believe

so like this
Kare wa Kawaii-desu
you are cute

The negative version is dewa arimasen
or the informal negative version ja arimasen

so Kimi wa Kawaii dewa arimasen
You are not cute(Formal)

Kimi wa Kawaii Ja Arimasen
(Informal)

Desu can also be replaced by Da if you know the person well
so
Anata wa Kirai-da
I Hate you

for verbs you use Masu... of course none of these have acctual english translations
and i just now noticed someone already answered the question...

*Feels stupid*
