The inevitable end of our universe!

If you believe in the Big Bang theory then keep reading. As you know the universe was created in a fraction of a second as an unfolding of space an matter. There was tons of radiation, and exotic particles. As the universe cooled, more familiar particles formed called neutrons, electrons, and protons. Gradually elements formed like hydrogen and helium, which collapsed to create stars and glaxies. Now to the point. our universe is expanding, and its proven to be doing so. Eventually all things die. In 10 to the 98th power years, it is guessed, all objects (even black holes) will die out. This will leave nothing but space, electrons, positrons, neutrinos, and radiation. But....if there are those particles left over, is there a possibility that these left over elements could form newer elements? Elements were formed in the big bang theory, why couldent they be formed in a situation like this?

Physicists say the big bang started in a region no larger than a period at the end of this sentence. So my question is, how "big" is big? How "small" is small?

first of all, the head-death theory is not accepted by everyone.
many physicists still believe that the universe will crunch back together to form a new big bang. see:

I have an odd thought on the origins of the universe. probability of a particle appearing from nothing, incredibly small, BUT given infinite area and time, conditions which the universe meets, particles would appear, gravity would pull them together, once enough particles get together a critical mass would be acheived and we have a big bang. I know the principle of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created nor destroyed only converted, but if that is the case, where the hell did anything come from at all? Even I don't have an answer for that one, except the above mentioned theory, of course if things can randomly commence existance they can also randomly cease to exist, at some point a balance would have been reached where things appear at about the same rate they disappear, so we can say that there is almost exactly the same amount of matter in the universe now as there was at the big bang, so when it all inevitably gets pulled back in by gravity, it'll be at critical mass and go bang all over again.

long rant short, yeah, the universe will go crunch, but it will soon go bang again

I believe in multiple big bangs that constantly happen all over the infinte of space and not one single occurance.. but no proof at all.. like all thoeries about creation

Ah but right now the universe is expanding. It is believed to continue to do so. If objects in the universe stop accelerating away, and start decelerating, then I will start to believe in the big-crunch version.

it really must suck a lot to experience the big crush

Very... very... deep thoughts RzmmDX... I also agree that it much suck A LOT to expirence a big crush... -_-;;

well no worries about being in a crush cause the universe is about 15-13 billion years old arroding to the big bang thoery and current estimates say that there is still another 13-15 billion years before a big crush or a big.. everything falls apart and burns out

you never know, the universe may just keep expanding untill it eventually collapses into another dimention for all we know there maybe an endless amount of space out there the problem is we just don't know...

So i guesse we will have to just wait and see...

*sigh* we humans evolve from apes. our ancestors ate a Special foood that make of wat is today "A Living organism which has a unique way of living"

....back to the matter, YES the universe is a "BIG" place try imagining 1
atom is 1 human and that 1 atom is living here on earth thats "for me" how big is the universe... Every thing has its beggining and end right? we all know that... the universe has an end but we wont be here when that happens
you know why? ...Because every living species also has its end... If you watch discovery channel like every time ..u must have seen that ep. saying
that our moon is gradually moving away and as a result the earth will spin around and loose its course... and we all gonna die...

.....*sigh* i have many more things to say about this matter but ill just put all my thoughts in 1 word *ahem* "ExTiNcTiOn"

err, I do not have much knowledge in the space science, but it is an intreaging point.

I found a wabsite that, supposely, have a new concept of the universe and its structures.
http://ascension2000.com

The site has couple of e-books that you can read that has tons of scientific research and explanations that not only deals with origins of space, but origins of life as well.

It's quite interesting.

You can't exactly know how was the beginning and how will the universe end. But, yes. Everything has it's end, the universe will end too. But how it will end...who knows. But certain theory said that the universe will loose it's ability to expand and it will shrink and than it's turn into nothing.
Well, confusing huh? But i don't believe if this universe is endless.

I don't even think humans will be around to see that.

I've read all the posts and I still don't understand what they mean by "the universe is expanding".. --_--

Everything reaches it end. So eventually the universe will stop growing and that'll be it. They'll be no more growing and the universe will be the same for all eternity. Maybe the edge of the universe will be like in Futurama. A look into an alternate universe.

This is a depressing thread. I have to disagree with FTY that extinction is inevitable as the moon moves away from the earth. I'm sure by the time that happens humans will have the technology to either leave earth, or live on the earth even with it destabilized by the loss of moon. As to the end of the universe...cosmology is not my forte (to put it mildly). All I can say is that if God can may one Big Bang, He can make another if he feels like re-creating the universe sometime.

Think I get the hang of it now. So, the distance between stars and planets are somehow becomes farther, or we call it "the universe is expanding", right? If that so, isn't it's because of the gravitational forces that are weakened? In my opinion, gravity is affected by magnetic force, and the magnets we know will never be 'permanent' forever.
Eventually, the Earth and other objects will collide each other, and then the second big bang will occur. Gee, that's scary...0_o

I think what they mean by the Universe is growing is that we are discovering more and more of the Universe. Before Gallieo everyone felt like all there is this whole universe is Earth. But now, because of technology, we are discovering more and more of the universe that is far from us. I think that's what they mean by the universe is growing.

No, when they say that the universe is expanding that's actually what they mean. The galaxies are moving further and further away from each other.

Well, everything ends in time right, then so is will the Universe. According to astrophysicists, it depends on how much mass the universe has that will determine how the Universe would end. if there isnt sufficient mass to hold the Universe together, it will keep expanding until nothing exists. But if there is enough mass, then the Universe will eventually collapse on itself and start another big bang (damn it will be scary when that happens). That's the theory anyway and by this the scientists are saying that there isnt enough matter to allow a collapse of the universe under its own gravity, that it will keep expanding and disapates. But with the possible existence of Dark Matter, the calculations have to be redone.
However, astronomers have discovered stellar bodies that are calculated to be older than the supposed age of our univese, which leads me to one conclusion.
There is a theory that there are other universes besides our own. I think that the boundary between the universes do not exist and so one universe will mix with another one hence the stars older than our Universe. My dad taught me to think of it as a large pond. A Big Bang is like a ripple in that pond. But since the pond is so vast, there can be many ripples and each occuring at different times. So for the Universe, that ours is just one out of many others in an existence that is beyond our own
