why don't you just uh google this or go get a book.

you'll get way more information faster than waiting for someone to reply here let alone getting someone to tell you everyday information.

If you are japanese you must speak to me for I am always trying to learn new things!

@GaiJin: dont be an ass.

Being in japan is very nice.
The culture is wonderful and old.
The food is excelent, my favorite of any location in the world!
The people are friendly on a whole. It is an advantage to be a male if you travel to japan. This is unfortunate but the society is sexist compared to Western standards.
The language is fun! It is very logical and there are no tricky syllables like in some other languages. It is hard to hear details like 'ou' vs. 'o' and pronouncing the 'l' sound often trips up gaijin (foreigners).

If you decide to study in japan, and have the oportunity, definetly do homestay. you learn a lot more and the personal connection is important.

Also, you will be an automatic celebrity, being foreign. If you like that idea, japan is for you. If you would rather not attract attention, maybe think twice about a long stay there. Some people get sick of being stared at all the time. Never bothered me though.

not trying to be an ass but how much do you REALLY think he'll learn by asking here?

I mean from you he learned

"japan is nice, its wonderfull."

I don't think he learned alot about the culture there do you? Unless there's a forumite here willing to spit out 10 pages for this guy, he will learn alot more on broad culture japanese stuff through books and the internet.

I wasn't trying to be an ass but he waited over 24 hours to learn

the food is excelent and the culture is wonderfull and old.

Sorry, I just think a quick google search or two would give him way more feedback.

hmmmmzu k i'm an ass whatever, of I go to ass land ^^.

If you are japanese you must speak to me for I am always trying to learn new things!

*getting back to the thread here* I haven't been to Japan either (I know! Let's have everyone at gendou.com meet in Japan one day!!), but that doesn't mean you can't know a bit from wherever you are. When it comes to culture, I'd say go rent some nice movies. Doesn't matter whether the timeline's set in ancient Japan or modern, at least you can see how lifestyle is. Food, I've had a habit of making miso soup and sushi w/eels and avocado constantly. I'm in college and sometimes I need a quick meal (don't even say fast food to me... ^-^;). Here's a site I just found that even has pictures in the directions:

http://www.japan-guide.com/r/e1.html

The language? There's all kinds of songs that once you listen enough of, I believe it will really help you. There's classic, childrens, J-Pop, and of course anime. And when if comes to learning the language, here's tips I typed from another thread (so you don't have to hunt ^-^... that shows, gendou.com is a one-of-a-kind-site).

1. Try to find a teacher of some kind. Even friends will do.
2. Speaking of friends, study together.
3. Watch a lot of TV in Japanese. Don't worry if you don't understand at first. I certainly didn't understand Digimon while in Germany at first but be around the environment at least. Even try going in the Foreign section to look for movies.
4. Listen to a lot of people speak the language. Yeah, that means music too.
5. Read a lot. Literature, kids stories, sing songs, whatever. Luckily, I found tons of Dragon Ball books translated in Germany whenever I wait for my train so I kill time.
6. Go to Japan yourself. I swear thats got to be one of the best ways to start learning a language.
7. Dont abuse what you know. There's always something new to learn so don't show off or anything.
8. As for sites, I'm sure you can do a search engine and find something. I can highly assure you there is a free site somewhere. The hard work is left up to you.

"It is an advantage to be a male if you travel to japan. This is unfortunate but the society is sexist compared to Western standards."

What would that mean? Men get more advantage in things like careers, jobs, etc?

Hmm, if I go to a university in Japan when I'm older or if I can afford it, would you actually have to know their language? Or is there a place for foreigners to learns I really want to get away from the house one day and go on vacation and maybe (if I can) live there and enjoy the beautiful scenes/scenery

there are international colleges where classes are taught in english(except for japanese) yes, but it's still a good idea to start learning the language. I mean...if you want friends at all or make a positive impression that is.

If you are japanese you must speak to me for I am always trying to learn new things!

Oh god where to start... uhm..Was born and raised there and all but wow...
The people are pretty nice but omg, watch out for rush hours >_> some old women are mean. Its pretty easy makin frenz. I found having jp frenz really helped me learn the language better including slangs.

Food...oh god if ur at least 20 years old, I recommend you try out the izakayas some of the ones I kno are 白木屋(shirokiya)笑笑(warawara) Its pretty cheap and its got all sorts of foods jp, american , etc.Ppl are allowed to smoke in there so just a warning if u dun like smoke..Depends what part of Japan ur visiting too. I heard Hokkaido has the best steamed crabs and Osaka has really good Octopus uh.. ball like things (Takoyaki..) ahaha not balls GAWD! >_<; Theres a curry museum and a China town in Yokohama. But yea the foods yummay and stuff.

If ur into the culture..Theres tons of places you can go visit.. Like the Buddha in Kamakura. Or the Man made cave around there ugh I forget wat its called Taiya cave or something...my teacher said it was made from budhists (GOD i cant spell im sorries)and inside theres a spot where u can touch the water and I "think" it was to cleanse ya of sicknesses etc. (Had a lil cold that day..i wanted to belie--ve!!) I should look it up meh..Ive never been to Kyuushu but I heard theres a buncha old fashion things down there..Id like to go down there one day myself..

Warning: The arcades are ADDICTING!!!!!!!!!!!! PLZ watch out..its pretty expensive too...Those UFO machines... CURSE THEM ALL!!!!!!

***Anyways, I hope some of the info kinda sorta maybe a lil helped you out.. Take care!

LOL UFO catcher is so easy, I won like 10 things for my girl, but it was expencive. The people are very nice, one time when I first went and was trying to get to Yokohama from Tokyo, Some lady getting off her train got back on to help us get to Yokohama, then rode back. They are very understanding of outsiders. You wont get funny looks in Tokyo, but if you goto a small town it is. Kyushu is great, very hilly, volcanic village-y place. down to earth.

Japan is a Patriachel (however thats spelled) society. Men get jobs, women stay home. The father is the money earner, the head of the family, if he says something, it gets done. Allthough there are lots of women in the workplace now-a-days.

Men make the money..but isn't the woman generally in charge of spending/budget? I was really curious about some particular anime scenes so I did some research. Since the woman cares for the house, she knows where the money needs to go....was that all misinformation? Just curious...it kind of balances some things out in my mind....but there are still some very sexist gender issues if you compare Japan to America..Oh, except that crime against women is VERY LOW. According to most travel references, anyways...seems hard to believe considering some the more unmentionable comics and anime shows. You may not feel equal as a woman, and you may even be groped on a train, but you have very slim chances of being robbed or raped...go figure!

Where do those mallets come from anyways?

Japan also have what is called an 'export culture'. Some of what you see on net or on tv and stuff arent really what's going on in JP. I read an editorial from a american guy who's there currently teaching english. And that's what he said, what you see in western tv isnt what is really there in JP.
