An english learning japanese. Even though its harder for a japanese to pronounce the english language, that doesnt mean its harder for them to learn that language. The english language is very basic and its the easiest language that uses the alphabet. And just for the fact that there is only 26 letters in the english language, its better than someone trying to learn the japanese language that has god knows how many simbols ^_^

i'd say an american learning japanese. because it's easy to learn english even with just a dictionary. and katakana is like english converted to japanese, or something like that. but to learn japanese you have to learn hiragana, katakana and kanji. it's like learning 2 sets of alphabet and chinese characters and still not know their meanings.

Momoi has a point. I have Japanese friends who find it hard to pronounce english words. I can't decide though which one is harder. One is that for an English/American to study Japanese, he/she has to learn the syllables then the characters themselves. On the other hand, the Japanese who's going to study english has to watch over the grammar, spelling and pronunciation.

Initially, I wanted to answer a Japanese learning english. I guess, I'll stick to this one. ^_^

I would say Japanese person learning English, because the pronunciation in English is too different from that of Japanese. For example, Japanese lacks the 'r' - rolling tongue - sound. Also, writing in Japanese is just writing down what you hear, and there are (usually) no alternate forms of spelling. There are a lot of homophones though.

An American learning Japanese is definitely harder. A lot harder I tell you.
First off, almost every country in the world has some people that speaks English.
Second, Japanese is not that widely used, compared to other languages such as English, Spanish, French...etc.
And other reasons........ I think the people that have posted before me already listed them.

i think japanese learning english. some of japanese can't spell very well like american, cause of their habit. So sometimes, it doesn't very easy to understand and sounds a little funny ^_^;

Japanese learning English. Isn't the grammar different as well? I felt so bad because a cute Japanese girl came to visit a friend of mine here in America, and my friend kept using words like "gonna" or "wanna" or... you know, our "slang." She kept asking me to clarify...

Japanese person learning English

I observed though because the way japanese speak english (especially their intonation) are way too different.

as i know english-person would be flexible learning other languanges

Personally both are difficult... but with English's exceptions to the exceptions of rules it makes it one of the hardest languages to learn. I would say that it would be harder for a Japanese person to learn English...

maybe...... american learning japanese. well, it depends on whether or not he or she knows other languages, the people around, the learning environment, ya know. one of my japanese course mates is american and he can speak and write japanese very proficiently. ok this might be an anomaly....

it's hard for japanese to really master english because they don't have the suitable environment. i mean.. they can do well with only japanese, isn't it? english doesn't really play a part in their daily lives, unless their work require english skills. nevertheless, the world's moving towards globalisation, so i guess even japanese have to become good in english, eh?
