What is their problem?
Link | by hatsu on 2005-07-22 21:53:55 (edited 2005-07-22 21:55:15)
Time and time again I have shopped at my local bookstore for anime, manga, etc. When I arive at the counter with my arms full of prementioned merchandise I am almost always given a look, one that says, 'Eww, not one of them again.' And then they recoil as though I have the plauge. I don't mind the look itself, for I give it right back, but what is their problem? Why does anime, manga, etc. retain its bad press after all these years?

hm...probably because the people there are biased! they'd rather see you supporting the american (comics) rather than the japanese merchandise...i guess.

a lot of people near me doesn't like anime/manga either. i really have no idea why, so i don't think about it much either...

perhaps because many people view anime as childish, since it's 'cartoons' which are generally targeted at kids. So when they see a fully grown up person who likes anime/manga they think the person is some psycho who doesn't wanna grow up and they get creeped out? lol ^^ But don't take that seriously.

Fair point dyaoka, but on the flipside, could you not argue that by supporting anime you are supporting the understanding of other cultures? Nearly every anime shows its roots other than in the eyes. Therefore anyone who approaches anime from an educational stand point could find a reason to watch. And too, one look at most anime women and their lack of clothing would shake anyone out of the idea that anime is only for children. I don't mean to contradict you, but this is a national issue that deserves debate.

Aww, that's TERRIBLE! All the places I go to understand the love of anime/manga. That's so dumb, though. Try going somewhere else, then. Try Waldenbooks, Borders, or Flying Colors. THOSE people are terribly nice, and they actually talk to you about upcoming titles and what their favorites are!

People like that should be ignored... They think they're the best and we're the fools... Heh, when I meet people like that, I act like a fool and ignore them so they themself are kinda offended... lol

Okay, let's see the brighter side... Maybe they're confused when you enter the cashier with hands full? And maybe they recoil because they wanna give you way to cashier? Many of my friends don't like anime but they have their tolerancies.

Its a pain sometimes when you are buying Anime or Manga from mainstream stores. Mind you I almost always buy everything from my local comic shop because I can and I dont mind paying a buck or 2 more for a DVD to support a small local buisness plus Rich (the store owner) isnt a anime fan but he has taken the time to watch some of the key films of the genre such as Akira, GitS and suc and rather enjoyed them, he even asks some of us regulars what titles he should stock reguraly in the store, thats why you should shop small if you can. Although it is still humorus when I walk into a big box store, like Walm-Mart and see how the cashiers can be, but then again they dont know anything about 90% of the titles they are selling. ( A parent came into the electronics section at my local Wal-Mart a few months back and slammed down a volume of DBGT and started screaming about them "Peddling smut!" (DBGT's opening has a scence of Kid Goku fishing in the nude) and such as it contained nudity and being a cartoon it should be sanitized, I promptly walked up to the confused clerk and smiled, "Ma'am I overheard your concern and I would like to bring your attention to a point if I way.?" I turned around the DVD and showed her the warning label 13 up May Contain violence and Breif nudity, her high and mighty additude abated and she stormed off. I laughed and smiled as the manager of the section came up and asked what was going on, after an explination I was thanked and offered a job, I didnt take it because 1: I have a full time job elsewhere and 2: Im not a large Wal-Mart fan, but it shows that some people really should get their facts straight before the mock/harras us our our artform of choice.

If I'm not mistaken Spirited Away won an Oscar. That should have propelled the status of anime not only as a form of entertainment but also as a dignified form of art.

I haven't experienced being looked upon on by people whenever I buy anime stuff because the attendants in the shops where I buy are very accomodating and eager to give more information in case I don't know about this stuff and that.

But true, hatsu-san. This issue is something to debate on.
I don't actually know, but, do they give us THAT look because they think of us as weirdos - people whose imaginations have prevented them to look at the more practical things?

Then again, H's other point may be true, but your experience says a lot. ^_^

ive only delt w/dat problem a few times, the peeps i buy my stuff from r okay.heck, sumtimes they give me free comics and stuff lyk that. But i sorta know what u mean..theyr lyk"o god,an anime freak"which is dumb cause if they dont wanna see us then dont put anime in stak.Anime has made its self recongnizable here in da us,so no one should be given weird looks.peeps who do that r dumb and need to see it b4 they jugde it.And if they r lookin at ya weird u should say sumthin,well..it also depends on where u iz at..i heard(HEARD!)that peeps in da south hate dat anime stuff. If u iz in da south dat might b da reason.
oh and to dyaoka..i must say u have a point.but if they really wanted u to support the lame ass american comics they probably woulnt put it in stak.Although im sure the amercian comic makers r intimadated by japanese comics ,heh, comics from the 80s in japan r bein sold here and r really popular.
oh and yes rui IT DID WIN AN OSCAR!!

Hey guys, thanks for your support. soatome, that was a cool thing to do in the middle of a Walmart. I am glad that someone somewhere is catching and correcting people like that. Spirited Away deserved an Oscar, glad those people finialy realised imported cartoons are worth watching. Oh and I don't live in the south, but given its history with other races, I see why they might not take a liking to anime.

Reasons why people dont like "US"
1. They cant read
2. They were dumped by there girl/boy-friend/crush cuz thier girl/boy friend/crush is an animaniac
3. They are jealous of the "perfect" bodies of anime
4. They dont have any imagination or thier minds are blocked out by the every day problems and therfor hates evryone that they sees..

...this is my point of view and i only list the important ones here...
....oh and the no. 2 thing ...yes, it happenes my friend dumped some 1 cuz that some 1 laught at her when she was reading anime comix at school... hehehehe that was really funny...hehehe...

it's so true just because it's cartoon they all think it's some childlish thing to watch. wat a dumbass try something first then judge but if it's the same it's not nice to judge someone by that just because they don't like it.

hmmm....i don't seem to have that problem with strangers too much...then again over in Australia the major chain of suppermarkets or department stores don't stock any anime or manga at all. ^^ And the only places that have them are like Borders, and Kinokuniya (wonderful book store with a whole entire section devoted just to manga...kekekeke).....my only problem so far has been my parents asking me why i keep on watching something so childish....eh tis stupid realli...they haven't watched what i've watched n also what i like is what i like.....yeah anime isn't just for children....

Well um...That's a bit odd. I have never been given a dirty look when I buy my manga. I usually buy them at Borders. o_o I'd do the same. Just give them the dirty look right back.

Right on, Key pwns-san! That has always been my reflective counterattack whenever some clerk gives me The Look. I've grown accustomed to it. We anime lovers in highschool were the outcasts. We were taunted behind our our backs. We were called nerds. Not that I mind.

I remember one time when I entered a poster-making-contest, and onlookers were peeking about my shoulder to look at my work. One guy snorted loudly and scoffed, "Anime." Note the heavy distaste. I whirled around and said, "Yes, anime. It's a style of artform with a growing number of follwing in Asia, America and Europe. I'm so ecstatic that you know of it." He paled and walked away.

I won second, his entry didn't make it to the top ten. Gloat.

Anyway, just think of it this way. The one giving you the high-and-mighty look is missing something that you have had the privelege of enjoying for your life! Ain't that grand? ^^

Oh this is interesting. Maybe i can help. To be honest i used to be like that. I used to look down on a anime fan cuase i thought they were people who didnt have a life and were isolated by others. I belived and wished i would not turn out like them. But I was an idiot back then. I didnt even know what anime was. I just thought it was stuped. But i want to thank my cousin. She was the one who helped me view the other side of anime. I know understand why people love it. I belive this is how i changed. My cousin's are anime lovers. I thought they were losers. But i didnt know how much fun anime was back then. So people who give us looks, talking behing our backs..so on... are people that just don't know what anime really is. I PITY THEM FOR NOT KNOW HOW MUCH FUN ANIME REALLY IS!!!. I thank you my cousin for showing me the light. CAN I GET A HALLELUJHA!!!
