fiber optic computer
Link | by EricSoLazy on 2005-07-21 15:19:33
Me and a few friends were just sitting around talking about new technogly we could make.. and was thinking about a computer completely made of fiber optics..like al the wires in fiber optics and capacitors being diamond shaped so that it would reflect around constantly holding in light.. thats about as far as we got untill it got out of control... there is obviously alot missing in this idea.. any inherent flaws in fiber optics that im forgetting that would prevent this?

how do you make a transistor with fiber optics?
the building block of a computer chip is the transistor.
also, how do you mimic electrical 'capacitance' in photons?
seems like a neat idea but there are a lot of things missing.

Well just to clarify the only upside to creating this would to be able to use multiple wavelenghts of light to increase binary to whatever.. so maybe a prisim with filters could act as logic gates.. I cant think of a single way to create a light transistor.. but a bunch of different new things could work...

I think that a multifaced polygon with mirrors would allow light to bounce around and build up until needed.. that would slighlty work as a capacitor

you must be a millionare to be able to do that since fiber optic cables and diamonds cost a lot.

Fibre optic... use lighting energy to compute ?
May be fotons in light energy can do it...
if we were focus... compute in light speed is possible
the start of clock speed can be 100000 Ghz or more...
we'll wait and research ... until somebody smart...
found it

Actually, fiber optic cables are available... They're a bit expensive, but available none the less!

It would be expensive, but I think it would be possible to replace at least most of the cables in a computer with fiber optics...

I know that you can set up local area networks (LAN) using fiber optic cables, and there is a fiber optic plug in the back of the PS2 anyway...

That PS2 plug is for video out I think... (some rare type of connection maybe?)
Then again, that really doesn't make much sense either.

it is concievable to create a hard drive out of light, my theory being that a laser could etch patterns in a crystal that could be converted to 1s and 0s by hardware, the upside to this is there is the possibility of near infinite storage of info, cause you could stuff it into three dimensions, i brainstormed with my father on this (self proclaimed "super genius"). there are many flaws to it

Google info about quantum computing if you want good computer stuff.

The light idea has been done before, but isn't the epitome of storage and computing. They're already making quantum computers, which use a three dimensional random processor to compute. Storage is in a similiar manner, with power supplying a 4-force field to manipulate a constant stream of radiation, which will provide an amount of storage that would be quite near impossible to fill. If a 1 cubic centimeter space has 100^100^130 plancks... imagine the possibilities.

Grrr, I'm not going to talk about quantum mechanics any further. Have your father e-mail me at eric.martindale@gmail.com if he'd like.
