Bleach manga question!! (Japanese version)
Link | by kirima on 2005-07-19 10:20:36
I've always assumed that Ichigo's name was written 苺 (Strawberry), since that's how they translated it. But I mentioned it once in a conversation with a friend who knows Japanese, and she said that いちご (Ichigo) can also be applied to a separate set of kanji that mean "protection", which would fit in well with the series.

Is Ichigo's name written in kanji or hiragana in the Japanese version? And what was the other set of kanji pronounced "ichigo" that my friend mentioned, does anybody know?

My dictionary doesn't seem to cover it. I figure it's combination of kanji, combined solely to form the name (like most other Japanese names with multiple kanji). Short answer: dictinaries don't define names. ^.^

i think his name certainly doesn't translate as strawberry ^^;

It's probaably another kanji but another character was sort of making a joke out of the fact his name is pronounced the same way.

episode 8-9. The one that deals with the GroundFisher and his mother's death. Ichigo said he was given the name "Ichigo" so he could protect someone. Then he says the person he wanted to protect the most was his mother.

Ichi - one
Go - I dunno maybe something about protecting or stuff like that

that's why his dad said ichigo was given that name so he'll protect one thing that's important to him. That's my assumption

I haven't seen a lot of Bleach but I'd like to know why the sword is so gigantic when he carries and it's so slender and small when Rukia carried it. Does it have something to do with their power levels? Grr X_x?

ya.. sorta.. gotta do with the amount of "spirit energy" tt they have.. cant really remember how the anime explained it as...

It's because Ichigo has an unusually large amount of spiritual energy. A lot higher than Rukia's. It's also because Ichigo doesn't know his zanpaktou's name. Thus, it's just a bigger version of Rukia's zanpaktou.

O and how come Zangetsu looks like a giant version of a household kitchen knife?

Dear Bleach-fans,

Ano ne, at first I thought Kurosaki's name means Strawberry too, but until I read his name from the Bleach Official website and realized that was not true.

'苺'- いちご refers to strawberry whereas Kurosaki's given name in kanji is '一護' means first to protect. Ano ne the word '一' means One/First whereas '護' refers to Escort/Nursing/Protection.

I'm sorry if the explanation might get a little confusing...

It would be common to think it means Strawberry, but as for Japanese names, "Ichi" is extremly common in male names. (when I first watched it on TV I thought his name was 一郎 which is Ichiro (same as 鈴木一郎)but In a few of the Game Commercials and I belive sometime when he is fighting 恋字 it showed his kanji, which is as Chidoriochibi stated, is 黒崎一護.

By the way, Ichigo's fathers name is 一心

Hi Chimie-san,

Hee...hee, when you mentioned that Kurosaki's father name is '一心', does he has any brother by the name of '一意'

Haha, one heart and one will, sugoi desu ne, plus one to protect '一護'.

Welcome to the 'いちいち' 一族, just kidding :P

Hi Razz-san,

Quincy is a person who fights hollows. Unlike shinigami, quincys kill hollows, not purify them.

Eto...that's all the info i know...
