yep, i will be staying in Japan for three weeks starting july 16...
Gendou:
1) what can I expect to pay for anime dvds?
2)are All Region and Region 1 dvds available?
3) where are good places to find anime and manga? (i will be staying in Toyota City.)
4)Is bilingual manga available? failing that, what about manga with furigana over all the kanji?
5)finally, is anime merch (wallscrolls, hats, toys, etc) expensive?
thanks!

i didnt shop for anime. i always download anime if i wanna watch it, or i watched it on TV - when i was in japan.
the prices for DVDs are higher but the prices for manga are lower. DVDs are mostly region 2 i think, unfortunately.
the only bilingual manga is the "learn english" manga, which is kinda funny at first but sucks.
for manga: shop at book-off!!
for anime: shop at animate! (spelling?)
the only time they use furigana is for kids manga.

I can answer number five. A lot of anime merchandise is given away for the newer, less famous series that may become famous later. I have loads advertisements--though most of them are for ecchi--in my room just from going in stores and on the streets in Akihabara. After they bump up in fame, you can find scrolls and models between 1500 to 4000 yen. It's when you try to find really rare stuff, like limited Masashi Kishimoto drawing of Dragonball Z, where you star hurting your wallet.
Wall scrolls, at least in the little corner of Japan I live in, sometimes are just rolled up in tubes and put into a box to pick up at any place related to anime/manga/games, even as prizes in arcades (The arcade games are...weird). Sometimes free, while other times around 700 Yen. The cloth ones cost a lot more, of course.
Downloading anime is always easier. Even though they did arrest some guys for bootlegging Gundam Seed (Or was it Gundam SEED Destiny? I don't get much variety in anime on TV where I live), it's not THAT bad. There will be a certain number of studios that will add "Made in Japan" on their releases, but maybe the Metallica complex will kick in.

I know Tsubasa has Furigana...it's not for kids, and it's by CLAMP, so of course it's really great. Check it out. You can probably flip through a manga book and see if it has Furigana or not
