just a question to while the time

ok here is a question that i used to ask my "learned proffessors" in school. it was really fun to make them sweat.

a box is moving in space at v velocity. it has anti matter and matter particles inside it, held separately by a magnetic barrier. at time t the barrier disappears and the particles interact, resulting in destruction of their mass and release of gamma rays which escapes throgh the walls. now the overall mass of the system is reduced. by the conservation of momentum, the box should now move faster but how can it be accelerated? if its speed can't change, then is the law of conservation of momentum void?

yeah, yeah. i know its a pretty cheap one. first five guesses get an orange flavoured peccan candy. it is very easy, just don't go by its looks. thats what my teachers did. after 15 minutes of sweating when they finally realize the answer, they gave me a peculiar look and some extra hw to better utilize my time.

Heh, I like that one. Neat; I'll tell my brother to ask his teacher that one.
Of course, nothing changes because the antimatter and the matter cancel each other out. I must admit, I was wondering about that one for a while. Maybe I should have payed more attention in physics... :p

Answer: the box speed doesnt change, the light emmited take the momentum the matter and antimatter(as you should know light have momentum) had.

Do i get a candy?

if the energy was released wouldnt the energy escape in all directions causing it to stop

trying is the first step towards failure

Nope cause the energy realeased in one direction would negate the efect of the energy release in the opposite direction(vectorial algebra)it could somehow modify the speed of the box depending on the distribution of the mass and the material and shape of the box, but this wouldnt make a big change since at the macroscopic level the emission should be relatively equal in all directions. But to tell you the truth the most possble scenario under these conditions is that the box blows up, and the front pieces become further acelerated the back would be deshacelerated and the sides would go in an angle depending of the (tan)^- vel0/velfrom impact.
