OMG, finally something after SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO long....................

Okay, so... I must tell you this beforehand... I AM NOT AN EXPERT...

But, I DO HAVE MY OPINIONS.

However, I'll only provide some insight into Alexander first since I don't really know much about Khalid. Don't worry, if this thread has more responders, I'll post a more comprehensive and complete view...

So, my 'of-the-skin' (with just minimum knowledge) opinion would be this:

Alexander was indeed a brilliant general, even by modern military standards. The tactics that he had used in his wars against Darius III were a remarkable display quick-thinking as well as intelligence. What I liked most about Alexander's exploits would have to have been his ability to conquer a huge amount of land in just around 12-14 years. By ancient standards, this is very quick. But, you've also gotta look at the circumstances of that era, the Greeks by then were present in much of the Anatolian region and this is definitely what provided Alexander with his much needed support... The Greeks there viewed him as a savior of sorts.

I won't really touch into Alexander's personal life as I think that that is somewhat irrelevant to his actual abilities but one thing that has to be noted is drunkenness near the end of his life. I mean, after conquering land from all the way in northern Macedonia to all the way near the Bactrian region, it comes to no surprise that he would have had his grandiose moments, and I think was what that led to his 'awkwardness' in regards to his generals and others...

The one thing that I just couldn't seem to understand was his ability to rally around 30,000~40,000 men and still had them survive his many battles... That is one of the few things that I just don't understand. OR, perhaps by the end of his conquest of the Persian empire, he had lost lots of them due to mutiny or probably to death from exhaustion or from the enemy, but I'm guessing that they left Alexander because he insisted that his soldiers go all the way to try and conquer India or they just died, normally, as any other soldier would die due to lack of supplies or from the environment. P.S.: I wonder how he managed to get his men traverse the scorching hot Gedrosian desert... That still leaves me in wonder....

One final thing, one thing that I do know about Khalid ('Cuz I am a Moslem and that I had to study him for Religious class) was his insanely hot passion in defeating the enemy and trying to get himself martyred. Not to mention that he managed to conquer the Sassanid Empire in just a manner of a few short years... (But, of course that was probably only the western half of that empire I think)... Those things I still never seem to understand.

Also, what I still don't understand is how the Muslim armies managed to defeat better equipped enemies such as the Byzantines and the Sassanids when the Muslim armies aren't as that well-equipped as their foes.

How'd they managed to conquer in such a fast time? I DO NOT KNOW, REALLY, I DO NOT KNOW.........

Final reminder: This is all just my knowledge at its barest and so my most simple opinion... I didn't say which of the two was the better, I just simply said that Alexander is a great general and is admired even after almost 2200 years after his death... (MAN, THAT IS SUCH A LONG TIME AGO)

cool,dude..i didn't know that Khalid managed to grasp Sassanid Empire.guess they didn't print everything in text books, huh.

but, from muslims' point of view, the only logical explanation that i could think of- that of Khalid's quick victory - is ,divine intervention. plus his charisma as the leader ..must have encourage the whole army.one thing that intrigues me about him is his background. for one to oppose Islam in the beginning, and after he embraced it, fight tooth and nail against its adversaries..one word : cool.

i think he's on par with saladin.or is saladin greater? together with saracen, he managed to conquer Jerusalem from the Crusaders.and Khalid with Sassanid Empire.. i don't know..not a historian,really..anyway that's just my opinion based on the limited knowledge i have. hope i didn't offend anyone....

Hmm, I too don't know much really about this particular era of history...

But, what I do think, is that to me, I personally prefer Saladin over Khalid.

This is because Khalid's deepest wish to fight his enemies was so that he could get martyred. Remember, that was his number one goal from the beginning... In fact, I once read somewhere that due to him not being martyred but his companions being martyred, he became very upset about it.

Also, to me Saladin has this aura that I find hard to explain. Saladin gives off this weird feeling that he is indeed a truly great man... Again, I'm no expert, just saying that he gives off this vibe to show that he is indeed really cool and dependable.

yup..but i guess as Khalid lives in Muhammad's era, that should explain why he was so driven to die a martyr. yeah, i too, agree that saladin is way cooler ( though there's no use comparing- both of'em r great warriors after all) because his story and life is more exposed to the public than Khalid.

hmm, i wonder why saladin never showed up in Fate/Stay Night. he's an epic hero, after all..omg sorry i drifted from the topic. haha :D

Hahahah, Saladin would make a great Saber... Yeah, I definitely agree with you on Saladin & Khalid.

Hmm, are you watching Fate/Zero? It has its historical content and the fact that Alexander's Rider is really nice, check out episode 11 and you'll see what I mean... Oh well, at least there was a little bit of conversation here I guess.

I have yet to download Fate/Zero. damn broadband limit..but currently I'm playing Fate/Extra, and I have to admit, this game is VERY informative. Before I didn't know that Dracula was actually a real thing, or to be exact what Dracula really is - Vlad the Impaler. I guess people at Type-Moon must be some freakin' awesome historians-turn-gamemakers.

hmm..how I wish school curriculum in the future would take video games into consideration..that would spare me the energy rather than conventional teaching.

Turns out not many Gendounians know history eh? Khalid from what I heard is a name feared by his opponent. Not because he's super-human strong, but because his tactics manage to defeat army with greater number and better equipment. For example, against Byzantine Empire. On paper, There is no way Khalid and his army can win.

There's another interesting about Khalid. He use different tactics for every battle that he's in charge with. He fought over 100 battles, which means he got more than 100 military tactics to bring his enemy to their knees. Interesting fact indeed.

@ RDH: Ya CAN'T be serious, that almost rivals Alexander's ability for war! Damn, that is oneheckuva military ability!

Well, when it comes to historical knowledge, I don't think people are interested though... I guess they think that it's gonna be one LONG discussion thingy. Other than that, I see that they sometimes tend to flock to some threads in this Philosophy section where they don't really have to explain a lot.

@FF: Yeah, I know, even now (for the moment though) I have to struggle with bandwidth limit because my original house is under renovation......... Also, there is one game I know that has a HUGE amount of fact... And that is Rome: Total War Europa Barbarorum. (The EB means that it is a special mod designed by some really talented people to make the game a lot more historically accurate... But, as time passes and more ancient things are discovered, we would soon have to update certain established facts according to those findings.)

BTW, what are you studying in college? History? Economics?

And, I really like the Fate series... It's one of those series where things are 'one-of-a-kind'. Also, I kinda like the video game thing, though that would take some time as the old way of doing education slowly starts to fade away... Which is why that if I had the money, I would want to build and staff and administer my OWN school to set as an example to other people. Making a statement to the world "This is my school, this is how I teach others, these things are what they will learn. This is how I do things to help others, and hopefully all of you would be able to learn something and get to see other young people benefit from it one way or another."

@ RDH : now that makes Khalid eligible to be a heroic spirit. LOL

@NM : I'm majoring in English, though. damn..what a twist of fate!5 years in science school and here I am,preparing myself with grammar and literarure. and to think that I'll be a teacher someday..still can't picture myself in the future /(*.*)\

You got it right, man. Fate series give me the opportunity to Google something useful( usually it would be games n anime.hahaha!!), and to think that I would read history - a subject least like by me back then - , phew..these people definitely know how to make history interesting. hmm,,maybe our government really should hire someone from Type-Moon.hahaha..

It looks like this forum is dead. Can anyone uplift my spirit and tell me some positive words that start with S or R (there are initial letters of my name) :-)
