Can I learn Chinese from Japanese easier?
Link | by night_link on 2005-06-27 13:43:13
Okay, this may sound stupid, but is it possible to learn Chinese more easier by learning Japanese first? They dont offer Chinese in the college I'm at, only Japanese. Anything whether its writing the characters or reading? I only know Japanese enough to speak but not at reading. I still plan to continue to take Japanese later.

It may or may not.

Some Chinese characters and Japanese characters look alike, but learning the sentence construction and the language itself is very different.

The Chinese language consists of characters which would differ in meaning whenever their tone graph changes. Tone graph here is how the characters are pronounced. I think the Japanese characters do not have tone graphs.

Hehe...I just have to warn you. Be careful with some Japanese characters and CHinese characters that appear the same. In reality, they differ in pronunciation and in the way they're written. For example, the Japanese language has a "de" which is read as "de" but in Chinese, they read it is "tu" and it means "of".

Hope I helped. ^_^

Wel-l... it depends. Like Rui-san said, most Japanese characters are the same as Chinese ones, but they differ in reading... although some are still the same... "Ai" as in "Love" and "Tensai" or "Genius" are both applicable to Japanese and Chinese.

You also have to take note that the Chinese has lots of dialects, which also differ from each other. Most of the Japanese readings were taken from Mandarin (I think), so it may help a bit.

if you dont know the writing i dont see the help at all.

If anything it would help with the writing because you would know some of the kanji already.

though didfferent meansing and pronucnations, you've already eliminated one problem in a sense that you already recognize the charactars.

Everyoen tells me to take both but honestly, I'd rather master one. I think getting rid of an accent would be ALOT harder if i'm speaking 3 languages and trying to learn 2.

If you are japanese you must speak to me for I am always trying to learn new things!

Actually, I found that being able to speak a bit of Mandarin helped with my Nihongo. It made me to better recognize subtle accent differences. But I guess it differs from person to person.

I speak 4 languages, but I don't seem to have a problem... except mastering Kanji, that is.

agree with Sadame-chan~~~~~~ It did help at understanding Kanji, cuz I can read and write Chinese pretty well [well, I DID live in China for 11 years....] and I can understand most, if not all, of the kanji. However it doesn't help at SPEAKING though... the pronounciation is VERY VERY different from Chinese.

same thing with learning Chinese after Japanese. You're gonna have a really hard time trying to figure out how to read Chinese out loud [believe me, you're gonna be confused enough once you learn all the pronounciations in Chinese. the ZH sound and Z sound and especially the X sound (my last name is Xia and over these years not a single American or Canadian can pronounce it right)]. BUT, it will be a bit easier if it comes to reading. BUT, IT STILL DEPENDS on whether if it's traditional or simplified. it's easy to figure out traditional if you know simplified, but it's not so easy figuring out simplified if you know traditional.

ALSO, just to confuse you, the Japanese ppl created some original Kanjis...for instance, cherry blossom [a very beloved flower both in China and Japan...] in Chinese it's 樱, but in Japanese kanji, it's 桜 [personally, I think the Chinese one looks better]. AND THEN, just to confuse you more, there're probably over 100 Chinese dialects...[maybe even more], it is official that ppl should speak Mandarin, but in some rural districts, they still speak their native dialect. and BELIEVE ME, you won't even notice that they're all Chinese... I CAN'T EVEN UNDERSTAND WHAT MY GRANDPA SAYS because of his bad dialect accent... PLUS he can't read or write Chinese so our conversation usually goes like this:
Grandpa: #!$%&#*
Me: yeah
Grandpa: (&^#@^
Me: sure
Grandpa: $&*#^@
Me: ok, whatever you say, gramps...

sorry...this is a really really long reply I know... but it's not that easy explaining the difference between Chinese and Japanese... and if you wanna know more I can hand in a 20-page essay on that........

My teacher said that Chinesse languange have 3 different pronounciation if you say a word without knowing how to pronounce it. You'll end up confusing your chinesse people when you talk to them...

Ingnoring anything that anyone else has said, here's my take -

I took Chinese before Japanese, and only know a tiny bit in each.

The Chinese use traditional kanji, although simplified are getting more and more popular. Japanese tend to use simplified. "Kanji" being a Japanese word, they're just called characters when referred to as related to the Chinese language.

With Chinese words, you not only have to pronounce them correctly, but with the correct inflections, which I never mastered. In fact, I have no recollection of infections past "Ni Hao" (rising-falling for both words).

Chinese has no phonetic.

Chinese has more sounds than Japanese.

As a general rule, Chinese characters are only one syllable and have only one pronounciation. If a character can be pronounced differently, it is because it has a different meaning to go with it.

Although people say that Japanese characters have two pronouciations, the Japanese way and the "Chinese" way, the "Chinese" (on-yomi) does not usually correspond to the modern-day Mandrin Chinese pronouciation of that character. Some meanings tend to change as well.

Overall, it could be easier, but only if you can keep the two separate in your mind. If you can, then go for it!

Learning Chinese really does help with kanji...except that I learned the traditional Chinese not simplified, which makes it a bit harder.

Well, knowing Chinese does help with Japanese...
Japanese onyomi (Chinese readings) come from the Shanghai dialect, so not too many similarities with Mandarin readings...
Kanji is much easier if you know some Chinese, but I don't know if it would work the other way around... And Chinese does have a phonetic system, but it's mostly only used in books for little kids, who don't know too many words... And Chinese also has tones (none, up, down-up, down, and light (not often used))

i leanrt both chinese and japanese, so i would say it's just the opposite. Learning chinese from japanese is quite hard since the chinese character is quite different than japanese and sometime the charater may look similiar in both language but it's totally opposite in meaning

No, it does not.

Though Japanese borrows its writing system from chinese ideograms, the readings of these characters have different readings, and though the onyomi (chinese readings) of these characters are reasonably similar, the two languages are completely different. Therefore, you cannot learn Japanese after doing Chinese.

Personally I think if you have majored in Japanese or Chinese, learning the other language might be easier. But if you're not majored in either one of them and planning to take the other language, you will most likely get confused with stroke orders and such between the two languages.

Not really. Sometimes it is easy, but sometimes not. It depends.
