Tales of Suvanna Discussion Thread

Tales of Suvanna (Terisu obu Suubanna) is the third Major installment of the "A Wandering Path" series of RPs on Gendou. The installment continues the story of the wars in Sumeria from the point of view of Oliver. A soldier who dreams to return to his home. Its characteristic genre name is RP of Finding What is Important. The RP release has been suspended indefinitely. (Or at least until the original members show up)

Despite how this looks, still feel free to discuss and post your opinions on anything or even vouch for a reservation for the cast.

Gameplay

Tales of Suvanna uses the TB-CPNS (Turn Based Compound Post/Narrative System). Players post and follow or contribute to the story. Players use their own created characters to interact and move the narrative forward.

Unlike most other RP's, the story in Tales of Suvanna is already roughly decided. With major events from the beginning and end already a part of a intricate plot. Though other players are encouraged to also take the spotlight to develop their own character's back stories and contribute to the story.

At certain points in the game, players will be faced with enemies they have to fight. When this occurs, the posting style changes to something out of a Turn-Based Video game. Where individual characters and the enemy take turns attacking one another. Characters can use special attacks known as 'Artes' that they create themselves. Tales of Suvanna also features a Perk System to further customize a character with choices ranging from being able to chain Artes or Increasing Hits in a normal attack.

Plot

Setting

Taking place on the Continent of Suvanna. There exists three major powers. The Noman Empire, the Kingdom of Suvanna, and the Alemanni Kingdom. At the command of Emperor Cigatrix and his Chaos Choir, the armies of Suvanna march onto Noman lands and claim it as their own. Almost a year after the invasion, the Noman Empire struggles to keep Suvanna's advancing armies at bay.

Suvanna, with the Upper hand, decides to strike at the heart of the Noman Empire itself: the city of Nome.


Story

Tales of Suvanna starts with the Suvannian soldier Oliver being deployed to perform special operations in the city of Nome prior to the main attack. His particular squad is assigned to assassinate a target of interest in the city. When he is about to slay his targets, Oliver betrays his squad and assists his objectives in escape. Now a traitor, Oliver escapes Nome with his new found companions, with the only wish to return to his childhood home in Suvanna.

However, when he is reunited with one of his friends from the military vessel he served on. Oliver finds that he and her are being pursued as "Strategic Objectives" by Suvanna's military.

Main Characters

Oliver
Age: 19

Occupation: Dark Blood Operative
A soldier of the Suvanna Military who has spent his life moving from unit to unit. He left his home village in Suvanna when he was conscripted into the military as a young boy. Because of this, he holds some silent resentment to the army he serves. Though he is very skilled in his profession, he desires the freedom to be able to what he wants to do with his life.

Sophia Prohtotype
Age: 17
Weapon: Rods and Staffs
Occupation: Airship Attendant
A girl who serves aboard the same ship Oliver is stationed on, albeit more of a logistical role. She is oftentimes visited by important people such as the generals of the Chaos Choir. Though she and Oliver are long time friends, she has yet to tell Oliver why. Sophia is the type of girl who can treat everyone as a good friend. Though she is also known to criticize them openly as well.

Flet Rahden
Age: 17
Weapon: Broadswords and Scimitars
Occupation: Traveler
A boy who wishes to become a better person. He is a novice fighter who makes up or his lacking in combat with his willingness to learn. Flet seems to be the most straight headed of the group, and usually likes to think rather than charge in when he has the chance. Though occasionally cowardly, he's always eager to help out when he can.

Runerica
Age: 16
Weapon: Rods and Staffs
Occupation: Maidservant
A girl whose often quick to anger. She works for Flet's family and is currently traveling traveling with him. She has a deep sense of duty that currently has her wanting to join the Noman Armed Forces. Though her magic can sometimes be described as a immensely destructive, she still likes the comfort of having her allies to back her up.

Kaede Nagase
Age: 18
Weapon: Compound Windmill Shuriken
Occupation: Wandering Bandit
A young woman who once lead a group of bandits whom she seeks to avenge. Despite her motives, she's a very laid back person who likes to tease others. Kaede is skilled in fighting with special weapon that can break apart for different purposes. She's also quite skilled in navigating unknown places.

Kotoko Allens Tretzerblien
Age: ???
Weapon: Bows
Occupation: Alemanni Kingdom Visitor
Skilled with a bow, Kotoko is a traveler hailing from the Alemanni Kingdom from the north. She is very factual in her speech. Though this may lead some to think she lacks empathy for others, she genuinely treasures her relationships with the friends she makes.

Development

Feburary 4 - Made this wiki style RP description. More characters will be added later.
I also have the slightly more complete perk list down. Right now thinking of what else could be added.
Veterans of my other RPs will also notice I decided to just go with Tales terminology at this point.
March 3 - Added the rest of the original party that was under my control.
March 19 - Added the missing character Kotoko. Also updated the wiki to descriptions of all the major cities in the world.

This is actually quite good. I have no objections about this whatsoever. I would like to see a "RPG" feature in this RP. But I do have a few questions.

1. So if Tales cameos are welcome, can you RP them or are they just NPCs?

2. Will we be able to post our artes in our character bios?

3. Should the bio be posted here?

Cameo as you wish. I havent actually used them since I'd like to consider this like it's own game. Still, if you have honest plans to use them, then by all means.

Artes are more or less "Skills" in the RPG portion of the RP. As such, you'll only be limited to just one at the start. However, if you already have skills/artes in mind, do keep them safe, as you'll eventually use them when you update your character when you add skills/perks as they level up.

Right. Like I said at the start, the discussion thread is also someplace where you can start posting up your characters, along with discussing the other topics.

@ Kay:

If you mean Zion like controlling him, well yeah, he is still your character. I do have him playing a bigger part this time around though.

My breaks lasting a month long so I have lots of time to get back to RPing. Really need to update my part in the Wiki though...

She decided then to fight against them, that the Chaos Choir shouldn't rule the island with a iron fist like they are doing. Rina can come off as a bit of a sadist, often punishing others who upset her, although she never shows it.

Weapon: A pair of twin blades, using the fighting style that is similar to Lloyd's (Tales of Symphonia) and Spada's (Tales of Innocence). Her fighting technique relies on power moves that can clear crowds and also can fight in midair.

1.) What happenes to our old chars?

2.) can we still use them?

3.) I say go on with the RPG part... I find that part interesting... as long as the dmg calculations are simple...

@ Naru: For Presea. If you're planning to use her on a more than once basis, then do make a bio. (Kaede Fuyou from Negima! was one of the characters I used extensively in the last RP.)

For the skill. I'll go ahead and start going into a bit more detail with it at the bottom of this post.


@ Kay: Yes. The rest of the Sumeria crew can and will be involved. My only requirement is that you introduce them again when they appear for the first time. Once that's done, you can proceed like normal. "Simply be considerate about giving some explanation to heavy plot details attached to your characters" just about sums it up.


@ KM: Thanks. I'm going to flesh out Arc Aile's Details a bit more before the RP starts.


@ Xero: Pretty much the same as above. You'll need to reintroduce them again. I guess you can say... imagine like Tales of Sumeria was the prequel and this is the main game where the characters where first introduced. (Like Crisis Core to Final Fantasy 7) Is a good way to put it.

Skills In Combat:

In the RP. Special attacks are known as "Skills". While you can perform a normal "Attack" option when choosing an action, Skills are often more powerful and can have a variety of effects.

Below Is a simple Example of a skill, as it would look in your character sheet sheet.

Demon Fang (Attack Name)
SU Cost: 2 (Amount of SU Deducted per use)
Attack Calculation: ATK X 1 + MAG X 1/2 (How much damage is calculated against the opponent, in this case, it's your Attack times 1, plus your Magic halved)
Special Effects/Notes: N/A (Shows extra notes such as the chances of the attack inflicting a status ailment)
Description: Send a strong wave of energy along the ground. (Describes the attack)

Whenever your character "Levels Up" after a boss battle, you'll be able to choose between a perk or adding a new skill to your character.

It will be up to you to make up your skills. Also, once I find it, there will be a table that has a list of all the possible options you have for making your skill. Once you think you have what you want, PM it to me and we'll make sure it's alright. I should note that I'll be the one who has last say in the amount of SU you consume, and these said decisions will be based off similar skills in other video games (Mana Khemia and the Tales of Series in particular). If you don't like the SU cost, you may need to tone down the skill just a bit.

I also removed the "element" portion of the skill. For the sake of simplicity, though, any of you guys think I should keep it? (I was thinking about applying the "Field of Fonons" idea from TOTA, where in my version, if a spell is cast and somone uses a skill of the same element, the skill gets an extra X 2 MAG power up). But I'm unsure on the issue related to elemental weaknesses, and having to list them all the time -_-')

Wow, I have a list of things to update then. I don't think I would make any new characters, since I have loads already but instead, import them from Sumeria, like the outlaws of Millelune.
Also, I'm thinking we should tone down our characters' skills a little no? Oh yea, want me to add it up to the wiki? Before I forgot, is the Blue Moon involved in this as well?

@ Naru: Yup. Overlimit does appear in the RP as a form of a perk. I already have it listed in this post so I guess I dont have much more to say!

@ Kay: I'm generally looking at slowly introducing them just a couple at a time. Most of the characters whom where prominent in the early and last thread should make a reappearance, but not all at once. Basically, what my biggest worry here is having everyone appear at once.

Along with that, I'm trying to write up a general outline so that, even if we do get mega sidetracked again, I'll already know where we need to go plot wise. Along with this, It'll plan out which particular "Act" a particular group will appear in. I've always disliked the notion of a "Linear Story RP" though with this kind of RP, just a little insurance is needed so that it doesn't die if ideas run out.

For our very powered up characters. Whether or not to revert them depends on what "status" they'll have in the RP plotwise. If they'll actively be fighting alongside Oliver's main party or as another opposing party then it would be a good idea to do so. However, for particular boss characters "Such as Zion or Gin" I'll basically have to make their stats on the spot when the party fights them. As with you, xero, and Karuzo, you'll have to decide who'll revert and be a active party member and who'll be story only characters, or who might end up being a boss character in the future.

And yup, blue moon'll make it's appearance too in time. Still need to get the general points of the story decided.




Here are my two mains for the story. I haven't had the time to work out their stats, since I have several other profiles and other RP related things to work on and update!

Bio: Born in a village in the nation of Suvanna. He was kidnapped at the age of 10 and eventually found himself enlisted in the military. Much of his life after that was spent working as an attendant aboard Chaos Choir General Zion’s Flagship.

Much to his displeasure, it always seems like everyone asks him for help, and he has no real idea as to why. Though, he has been described as having a very approachable nature.

His one goal in life is to return home, however, it will likely be years before he’s eligible to retire.

Weapon: Blade and Pistol
Oliver fights with a combination of a one handed sword and a pistol weapon. An agile fighter, Oliver has a good handle on weapons since they’ve been his only hobby. He also has some real life combat knowledge thanks to some pointers he’s learned from soldiers he’s befriended over the years.

Titles: Bloody Roar Operative – “A member of the Dark Blood unit of the Chaos Choir Military.”

An outgoing girl, Sophia has more people skills than Oliver despite her living on the ship for so long. She’ll openly joke and criticize complete strangers as if she’s known him for years. Though the one person she seems to do her best to avoid is Zion.

With Oliver currently active in the combat units, she often worries for his safety.

Weapon: Staff
A Magic User, Sophia uses a staff in battle, and fights opponents with a combination of magic and combined melee and magic combat techniques. Her true specialization, though, is in healing magic.

Titles: Attendant – “One who does relatively minor work aboard Airgoing vessels.”

These perks listed here are the starter perks for a new character. After this, a larger list will be available listing the more advanced ones.

Prerequisites: N/A
"Just one more hit and he's down!"
Special: Strike twice during normal attack. (Which is normally calculated as 1 ATK)

Basic Magic
Prerequisites: Mage or Healer Class Only
"Let’s Fight With Magic!"
Special: A normal attack is changed to a magic projectile. (Normal attack is 1 Mag instead of 1 ATK)

Overlimit
Prerequisites: N/A
"I Won’t Lose!!!"
Special: Allows Overlimit when a chain hit of 15 or more is achieved, making you temporarily immune to aliments, and removes all negative status effects, and Multiplies the DEF stat by 2 for the duration of Overlimit. Prerequisite for Burst Artes.

Berserk
Prerequisites: N/A
"Wanna See How Strong I Really Am!?"
Special: Allows Berserk when HP is 20% is lower, multiplying ATK and MAG by 2 for the duration of Berserk. Alternative Prerequisite for Burst Artes.

Su Recovery
Prerequisites: N/A
"Just keep swinging it harder!"
Special: Each hit in a normal attack returns the same amount of SU to the attacker with this perk. (Doesn't include any hits in Skills) (1 hit = 1 Su recovered)

Follow Up
Prerequisites: Fighter/Ranger Class Only
“Tah! Now Here's My Tecnique!”
Special: Along with a normal attack. One can also “Follow up” with any of your skills. Will not work with magic spells, however.

First Aid
Prerequisites: Healer Class Only
"Heal The Wound... First Aid!"
Special: Grants the "First Aid" skill to a character.

I think you might want to change 'Bloody Roar' to 'Dark Blood' as Bloody Roar is the name of their ship

Anyways, how are we going to start? I'm kinda thinking we can focus on more of the events in Suvanna or we're starting in Nome, since most of the characters are currently there.

Sorry for disappearing again. Still, hope anyone celebrating had nice holidays!


@ Karuzo: I'll agree your characters have quite a bit behind them. If it where me I'd put those two as story-only so that they can still be "Powerful" without needing to worry about doing any powering down.

Alternatively, you can have an event where their powers are sealed at the RP's start and they regain their strength through the RP.

@ Xero: Sure.

@ Kay: I thought about making it it's own entity, but scrapped it. Changed.

Story wise, the RP'll rehash through some of the last few events that occurred at the end of Sumeria, just with a little bit more detail on Oliver's part.





@ all: I should also note, before you start putting your characters up, I've decided we should limit the participating characters in-battle to just two; in order to keep battles from dragging to long. This'll include myself.

However, the rule is somewhat lifted if you control characters from two opposing parties. In that case, you can control two on one side and two on the other for a total of four.

Once again I'd like to highlight the possibility of keeping some of the high powered port characters as story/boss only.

So, does just having 2 chars from each person per battle sound good?




Anyway, here's the last part of the Making a Character tut.


3: Making Skills

In battle, your character will have the ability to use skills in combat. These special tecniques can be executed for at a cost of some of the Character's Skill Utilization Points (SU).

Deciding what kind of skills to equip your characters with is completely up to the person in control of the characters.

Below Is a simple Example of a skill, as it would look in your character sheet sheet. Below, I'll go into more detail about each individual line.



Example Skill

Demon Fang (Attack Name)
SU Cost: 2 (Amount of SU Deducted per use)
Attack Calculation: ATK X 1 + MAG X 1/2 (How much damage is calculated against the opponent, in this case, it's your Attack times 1, plus your Magic halved)
Special Effects/Notes: N/A (Shows extra notes such as the chances of the attack inflicting a status ailment)
Description: Send a strong wave of energy along the ground. (Describes the attack)



Details of Skill

Name: The Name of the Skill
SU Cost: Amount of SU that is consumed per usage. (note that I'll decide this)
Attack Calculation: How to calculate how much damage the skill inflicts.
Special Effects/Notes: Special effects a skill can have. Some examples of effects include making a character confused or if it can be chained. You can also have skills that need a charge or leaves the character exhausted for a turn to reduce SU consumption or allow for a much stronger attack. Though you're free to make up new ones so long as you can explain them to me.
Element: The attack's element. (Though an attack is allowed to have no element)
Decription: Describes how the attack appears. Since some people use skills from existing games, you're free to link it to an appropriate video if you wish.


Once you have everything filled out, send it to me and I'll review it and give what I believe is the appropriate SU cost and/or suggest changes.



Additional Notes:

Do try to be reasonable about your first skill. If you try to have a skill with a damage calc of 10 Hits, you might have a SU price that allows it to be only used once with your current character. I'd advise the first skill to be no more than x3 ATK for melee classes and no more than x6 for spellcaster classes.

Though the RP will not have anything like elemental weaknesses, a skill's element can be useful with some later perks. So keep this in mind.

Note that I regard a single "hit" of a melee class as x1 ATK while I consider one normal "Hit" from a spell to be x2 MAG. In addition. .5 MAG is what I consider one hit from a melee skill with a particular element. Keep these in mind when describing an attack and deciding it's Damage calculation.

Characters are allowed to inflict status ailments. The chance for inflicting most of them will be 50%. I'll trust your integrity and just ask you flip a coin the turn you execute it.

Other status effects such as poison, I'll decide on this when someone decides to make a skill with it. Though don't fret about not being able to use it. You still can, I just have too many other things to work on for this RP @_@.


Anyway, I still want to update some of the character profiles one the wiki, get the character making portion organized, prepare the actual thread, and upload some pictures I drew.

At best, the actual thread will be open by the end of this week and I'll have signups open for a few days and then we'll actually start!

@Ugo- I see... if that would be the case I would gladly do it, but since Xeno and Riana does not have any stats so probably I could use them, but they will start on Level 1?

but let me think about it because Xeno and Riana has a much potential [if we look way back on previous posts what I had]

On your suggestion two person battle that would be good since controlling a lot is kinda hard and keeping some of the high powered port characters as story/boss compliment

Hi Everyone. Well, spend the good past couple of days writing the base outline for the RP's story and it looks pretty good. 50 Major chapters from start to finish. Also have detail for my character's development. At the least the base story is set so there wont be as many open parts.

Other things to note:

A couple of New Chaos Choir members appear.

Some characters (on my part) join and leave Oliver's party as the story progresses.

The story, while focused on Suvanna, does almost as equally have a good amount of traveling to other towns and cities (including the Alemanni Kingdom).

Each major character I have committed have their important character development put into the outline. I also have for their backstories to get fleshed out more. Characters I've written out have a more importance overall.

Most of the boss battles will be human opponents.

The outline mostly focuses on the perspective of "Oliver's Party" if you guys have plans with a separate party, I'll answer whatever question.

I'll also add in detained info on settlements in the RP on the Wiki.


I've also been hard at work updating parts of the Wiki. So... expect an actual thread open for recruitment by tomorrow night.

So much to do -_-'

@ KM: Pretty much yes, they'll be level 1. The main characters I used and am porting over will be level 1 again too.

@ Karuzo: OK. I'll look over everything once you have your characters to as you want them to be.

@ All: Everyone, I guess due to the lack of interest and as how school's started up for me again, I'll have to put the RP's start on hold till the start of summer, upcoming in roughly 5 months. However, in that time, I'll be able to fully polish the story, the battle style and customization options until that time. I'll also (hopefully) will be able to draw some general designs for the whole cast. Anyway to sum up what TOSU will be:

-It will be the first Gendou RP following a set story shamelessly done in the Tales of style. Players can opt to follow the RP like an in-game character or go contribute to the story in their own way.

-The Customization options will be fully finished and available to look at. I'll be looking into drawing character customization options from the "Mana Khemia" Series and the "Tales of Series" as well as some from the "Kingdom Hearts Series.

-Battle elements from these games may also be borrowed in a Turn Based format. Inturn, this will also be the very last time I'll try the whole turn-based idea in an RP.

-The wiki article will be complete with all important characters, information on towns, places, as well as in-game factions. Sections on "How To's of Combat" will also be included.





I'll take a bit more time to develop things with this RP. It's just my thought that an RP's running for this long deserves a bit more in the way of provisions! ^_^

Please feel free to still post comments here for discussion. I'll even take requests for original character art for use in the RP. I'm not gifted but I'm confident enough to go public at this point.
