How do we define 'Good'?

Hi~. People often look at something and say 'Thats good!'. Usually, this would be something in which they do not possess any skill or experience in. Some people say that something is 'good' or 'acceptable' or 'likeable' etc from what theyve seen of it in the past. Is 'good' set by standard or by opinion? Teachers may say something is good if it suits their standards/criteria, but students may say it is good because they have compared it to something else within a fraction of a second and made a judgement. Take this piece of writing for example... " People often claim that man's best invention was the wheel. Travel gets us from one place to another, lets us leap. But I believe that the best idea was thought. There is now such an appreciation for any recorded pieces of thought - how much money have authors made, journalists? The wheel only provided more circulation (no pun intended) around the world. But thought, thought gives us bridges, branches, places to see, and meet. And from one thought can come so much more, so many more thoughts and ideas... And to think, where would we be without thought? No thought, no wheel. Without thought, we would not have life. And this, as much as thought, is miraculous. " Is that good? In short, can there ever be any exact measure of what is 'good'? Peoples opinions will constantly differ, and standards will always be raised or lowered per teacher/authority. Is 'good' simply only a matter of value and opinion?

For me, the word good doesn't mean a single thought. It has different meanings therefore on how others use it also differs. Good is a set of standard if the person who uses the word seems to use it for that very reason and it is an opinion if the person uses it to comment on others even though they really don't mean it as truth (the fact that it is a comment also means it is an opinion, etc.) In this case, good can never have an exact measure. You see, people gives the meaning and how can these people have the same understanding of that word? So, good means whatever a person wants to think about it :DD ![]() |

1) there's no objective meaning for good and bad, one person's good is the other's bad. shae explained it nicely. 2) Konrad Lorenz said that in a society good is usually what we have short supplies of and bad is what we have large unnecessary amounts of. like empathy and violence. 3) i think we can track the meaning of good and bad back to our feelings. 4) auau auu auauu auau auua auau |

Good is merely value and opinion. Just because I say something is good does not mean it is good through someone else's perspective since that "good" is opinionated towards my thoughts. It isn't set by standards. Standards is what bends our thoughts into another. For example, I'm a CEO (person 1), who is rivaling against another similar CEO (person 2). That CEO (person 2) provides the same goods as me, and has better sales. Where as you (person 3) is a CEO who has good relation with the CEO (person 2), since that CEO (person 2) helps you profit. Now if that CEO (person 2) were to suddenly die of heart attack and I heard this, I would say "This is a good thing!", where as you would say, "This is very bad". The term 'good' comes from my train of thought, thinking that the CEO(person 2)'s death will profit my company, since competition decreases. However, you think its 'bad' since your company will lose profit. I guess in this example, the "standard" would be money, since it is generalized to think that the more money you have, the better (or more good), because of media. You can never measure "good", since it is abstract. You can't measure the value 3, but you can measure 3 cm. Or we can get into "the good", but that's christianity, and not opinionated, as it is a "standard" as you call it.

The word 'good' varies in definition according to an individual's view in sociology and opinions. Good can also be a word to show appreciation or an act of compliment towards an object or living thing. Usually in today's democratic world and sociology, a good person is usually a person with ideal positive traits & character and also someone who abide to the rules. |

The generalized concept of good as I know it is actions or thoughts which aid in your survival and prosperity. This extends to society in that the subject becomes the collective as a whole. So "good" can really be defined based on the individuals own set of personal values and only becomes the moral binding we understand it as when other people are involved. |

Basically, as Wolf said, the society as a whole decides what is good and bad. And good is generally defined as what helps survivability of that society. Take, for example, the practice of performing a clitorectomy on women in some African societies. By western standards it is cruel and mutilates the Woman's body for life. By western standards, mutilation does not help with survivability so we define it as bad. However by those societies' standards, removing the pleasure of sex from women keeps them from cheating on their husbands. This usually ensures that the children will have a mother around always to raise the children and it helps to keep disease from spreading through reckless promiscuity. In these societies, many women are excited to get clitorectomized as it is a sign of maturing to adulthood.

"I don't have any opinions anymore. All I know is that no one is better than anyone else, and everyone is the best at everything." -Seymour Skinner "...if I got trapped by an evil wizard then I did enough cool s**t in my life to be content with it ending. " -Wolf |
