Nephilim
Link | by otaku on 2010-08-24 11:49:15 (edited 2010-08-25 21:36:40)
Nephilim. A role-playing game. Only a thousand copies were ever made – two hundred and fifty for the Playstation systems, two hundred and fifty for the GameCube, two hundred and fifty for the Xbox, and two hundred and fifty for the computer. Each is registered to a single user, and will only play for that user. Perhaps that’s a good thing for the world.

Nephilim is a trap. Once you create the save file for it, you are literally sucked into the game. You are kept in stasis until all one thousand players have been registered. At that point, the creator of Nephilim brings you into a village from stasis, along with all nine hundred and ninety-nine other players and speaks to each of you.

“You are now within my game,” he says, in a booming godlike voice from somewhere unseen. “Beat the game, and you earn your freedom. Have fun. Ha ha ha ha ha ha….” His voice fades out.

Romance is acceptable, but keep it clean.
Anyone who doesn't follow the RP Guide can expect to be kicked out.
Post in Novel style.
Post at least three sentences.
You may have up to three characters.
When any of your characters levels up or gains new abilities, please post your new level and/or ability.
Create as many NPCs as you want. There are a thousand other players, after all. Also, there are all sorts of people inhabiting the Nephilim game. These peope don't know their world is data, and are unlikely to believe you when you say you're from another world.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everyone starts at Level 1 and earns Experience Points to Level Up. When you reach Level 99 in a class, you can start over in one of another three classes (depending on the class) with the stats you’ve earned (plus a nice boost) and al the abilities you learned. When you reach Level 99 in that class, you can select from the two you didn’t choose, and so on. When you’ve reached Level 99 in all four classes, you can upgrade to a “Nephilim” class that has superior stats and abilities.

Some examples of the class trees:

-Warrior (high Strength, nice Defense, low Speed)
-Monk (high Strength and Speed, focuses on unarmed attacks, equipment limited)
-Berserker (very high Strength, okay Speed, low Defense and Magic Resistance)
-Soldier (high Defense, okay Speed, low Magic Resistance)
-Nephilim: Archknight (very high Strength, high Speed, high Defense, okay Magic Resistance, limited spellcasting ability) (All the Nephilim classes have some spellcasting ability)

-Mage (very high Magic, low Defense, low Strength, high Speed, okay Magic Resistance)
-Priest (okay Magic, substandard Defense, low Strength, very high Magic Resistance, okay Speed)
-Shaman (high Magic, substandard Strength, okay Magic Resistance)
-Summoner (substandard Magic, ability to summon monsters to fight, low Speed)
-Nephilim: Sage (extremely high Magic, substandard Strength and Defense, very high Speed, very high Magic Resistance)

-Vigilante (high Speed, okay Strength, substandard Defense, many evasive abilities)
-Thief (very high Speed, substandard Strength, okay Defense, ability to steal and pick locks)
-Myrmidon (high Speed, high Strength, low Defense, many evasive abilities, boosted critical rate)
-Bandit (high Strength, nice Speed, substandard Defense)
-Nephilim: Assassin (extremely high Speed, very high Strength, substandard Defense, boosted critical rate, boosted critical power, limited spellcasting ability)

Feel free to create your own class trees, but they have to be similar thematically. For example, no fair tying together "Paladin", "Ulfsark", "Rogue", and "Thaumaturge". "Paladin", "Dragoon", "Gladiator" and "Armored" is fine though.

The character sheet is as follows:

Name:
Gender:
Age: (at least 14)
Class:
Abilities:
Bio:
Appearance:

Incidentally, when your character levels up, you can and should post it. When your character learns a new ability, you MUST post it.

My character:

Name: Brandon Decker
Gender: Male
Age: 15
Class: Mage
Abilities:
-Fireball: A single, low-power fireball. At his level, Brandon can use it seven times per day.
-Mage Ward: A shield that cuts the damage from a single physical attack by half. At his level, Brandon can use it three times per day.
Bio: His parents are in the middle of a divorce, and he moves between his father's place and his mother's. He isn't really happy. He picked up "Nephilim" while he was living with his father and immediately loaded it onto his computer. He was sucked in immediately.
Appearance: Black hair, short. Hazel eyes. His skin is pale, and he rarely smiles.

There are two things I can't stand in this world - people who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch.

-------------------------------------------

And, my characters:

:h a l i . h a y a s h i m i z u:

[Female]
[Fifteen]
[Mage]

Icebolt — A single, low-power iceball. Inflicts minor ice damage, mid-ranged. Hali can use it six times a day.

Mage Ward — A shield that cuts the damage from a single attack by half. At her level, it can be used twice a day.

[Half-Greek on her mother's side, Half-Japanese on her father's, Hali was always a shy, but intelligent child. She found it difficult to make friends, and those who did accept her, naturally did so because they were anime fanatics and gamers (OOC: Let's just face it, most of us are great people!). Thus, she began to get into anime and gaming, quickly. It wasn't very long after she began high school that one of her friends bought her a copy of a new computer game, Nephilim, which — aledgedly — the entire club was going to buy a copy of. There had been one copy left, and because her birthday was coming up, this friend, Sequoya, gave it to her as an early present. Hali has no idea what the game is about, or even what a Mage is for that matter.... At least she learns quickly....]

xXXx

:a r y a n a . v a l e n t i n e:
a s h e

[Female]
[Nineteen]
[Archer]

Sniper — Changes her bow from mid-range to high-range to ensure the attack doesn't miss. Usable once per battle.

Arrow Catcher — Allows Ashe to catch incoming arrows for four turns. Usuable once per battle.

[Before she was born, her parents were considering divorce. They had been married for almost eight years, and nothing had changed or grown between them. They thought that a child might change that; but when Aryana — cleverly nicknamed Ashe — was three and a half, her father left her mother. They've lived alone in the same house ever since. Ashe's mother never leaves the property; she runs a small cafe out of their garage, and on nice days opens the patio and the pool. However, she expects Ashe to help her with this buisness, even though Ashe wants to be a video game designer in stead. She bought Nephilim with some money she aquired on the rare days she works with her two cousins, Coralie and Rosalie; and fully expects it to be a mind-warping game.]

I'd better post my own second character.

-Blade Dancer (very high Speed, high Strength, low Defense, high Magic Resistance, boosted critical rate, boosted evasion rate, limited weapon selection, cannot equip armor except Blade Dancer armor)
-Blood Dancer (High Speed, nice Strength, low Defense, nice Magic Resistance, ability to run on walls and ceilings according to Speed stat, Knife specialty)
-Mage Dancer (Very High Speed, low Strength, high Magic, low Defense, okay Magic Resistance, ability to cast spells on the run)
-Mist Dancer (Extremely High Speed, low Strength, okay Magic, very low Defense, substandard Magic Resistance, limited weapon selection, specialized in Illusion magic, ability to cast spells on the run)
-Nephilim: Blood Night Dancer (maxed-out Speed, very high Strength, very high Magic, very high Magic Resistance, substandard Defense, ability to cast spells on the run, boosted critical rate, boosted evasion rate, ability to run on walls and ceilings according to Speed stat, limited weapon selection, cannot equip armor except Blade Dancer armor, vulnerable to Holy, Fire, Lightning, and Earth magic, resistant to Dark, Ice, Water, and Wind magic, is damaged instead by healing spells in battle)

Name: Shiori Kazekiri
Gender: Female
Age: 15
Class: Blood Dancer
Abilities:
-Jack the Rippper: Shiori can concentrate her attacks on 1 target. This multiplies the damage done to that target by 1.5, but only allows Shiori to attack that target until that target is dead. If, during any turn, that target is out of reach, the effect ends. This ability can be used once per encounter at Shiori's current level.
-Knife Counter: When wielding a knife, Shiori can counter melee attacks with a knife. Countering them this way cancels the attack and damages the one attacking. This ability can be used once every three turns at Shiori's current level.
Bio: Shiori was born to a seemingly normal Japanese family. However, her father was a gambling addict, and he sold her into prostitution to pay his debts. She managed to escape as a stowaway on a cruise ship, and made her way to America (thankfully), where she lived a life on the streets. One day, she shoplifted a game called "Nephilim" for cash and randomly decided that it wouldn't have been worth the effort of taking it if she didn't play it. So, she loaded it onto a library computer and was sucked in immediately.
Appearance: Long, dark brown hair, pale skin. She usually looks like she's been through hell after being taken there in a handbasket. Her eyes are hard, but when she smiles, they soften up.

There are two things I can't stand in this world - people who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch.

I think we can start. Anyone who hasn't finished their character sheet(s), please do so at your leisure, except for Abilities and Appearance.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brandon

Brandon woke up on a grassy hillside, and groaned. He sat up, and saw maybe a thousand other people lying down in the same general area, in various states of consciousness. What had happened? The last thing he remembered was creating a "Nephilim" save file on his PC... and then... he blacked out.

Brandon looked down at himself to see that he was dressed like Soren from Fire Emblem. That is to say, he was dressed in black robes that looked like a dramatized version of a medieval outfit. He also had a simple, oaken staff in his hand. How strange.

Panicking wouldn't help things, although every cell in his body called for him to do it. He remained calm, helped himself into a cross-legged position, and waited.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shiori

Shiori woke up yelling "No! No! I don't want to become a prostitute!" in Japanese. She looked around, registering that she was at the base of some kind of grass-covered hill, and was immediately confused. Where was she? She looked down at herself, causing her confusion to grow even more. She was dressed in what looked like a belly dancer's outfit! Yes, she had a knife, but she wasn't exactly dressed for battle.

She remembered loading the disc onto a library computer, and that was about it.

What was going on here!?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It may be a good idea if we list our equipment on our first active post.

Brandon:
Weapon: Oak Staff (+3 ATK, +2 Magic when used by a Magic character)
Shield: None
Body: Cloth Robe, Black (+5 DEF, +1 RES, +1 Magic when used by a Magic character)

[Lowen Hart | Nephilim | Hillside]

Lowen had just woke up. He sees many other people, about 1000 were there. He sees his clothing now had changed into some sort of noble clothing.

"What the... I'm kinda too old for this kind of activity..." He thought. He then swings the sword that he had with him. "I think this is okay, now to find out why i'm here and why did my clothings change". All that he can remember is that he only started "Nephilim" for his PC... and then he lost his consciousness

===================================================

[Azel Lockewood | Nephilim | Hillside]

Azel shouted as he just woke up. He can feel the grass... Noticing this, he checks his clothing. It turns into white tanktop and brown pants. He got an axe besides him. "Since when did I change?" That was all that he thought at the moment.

He looked around, many people was there. Their clothing were from the medieval era. "Did we, just got sucked into this game?" He thought. He then walked around the hillside...

[Naru Tasogare | Nephilim | Eastern Grassland]

Awaking from his unconscious state, he shakes his head and looks around.

"Where am I...? I can't seem to remember anything after making a save file from that game I bought..."

Naru takes the time to look at his clothing, which reminded him of warrior's clothing from medieval times.

"Strange, I don't really remember buying these...I might as well look around for some information."

Naru gets up and starts to walk off in the western direction.

---

[Aki Hantsuki | Nephilim | Grasslands]

"My head..."

Aki says this to herself when she wakes up from her slumber.

She then looks around and sees other people in the same condition.

"What happened to me? I don't recognize this place!"

Aki looks at her clothing, surprised. She doesn't remember this in her closet.

"All I can remember is putting a save file for that new game, then..."

"No! This isn't the time for remembering things! I have to find out where I'm supposed to go!"

With new determination, Aki gets up and runs south, towards the mountains.

"Ah, I see everyone has awakened," says a voice from, for lack of a better term, on high. Brandon looks around, and it does look like most of the people are awake. "Welcome one and all to my... game, you could call it. Ha ha ha."

"Who are you?" Brandon shouts up at the sky. He's not alone, either, as some other people shout up as well.

"Patience, patience, my players," the voice says. "It will come in time. It always does. For now, though, please enjoy yourselves. After all, beating the game earns you your freedom from it. Oh, yes, you will find in-game instructions in your Travelers' Guide, depending on your class. Now, good luck. Ha ha ha..." The voice fades out.

:h a l i:

I groaned, letting my eyes flutter open. It took a little longer for me to sit up, and when I did, I noticed thousands of people cluttering a grassland.... I was deeply shaken. Where was I? Who were these people? I stood up for a better look around, and noticed that my clothes had been changed. I now wore flowing white robes and petite leather slippers, carrying a wooden staff that reached over my head — despite my shock, I couldn't help notice how comfortable I was in these.

I shook my head. That wasn't the point! I started running as a voice overhead began to ring through the Heavens. "Ah, I see everyone has awakened. Welcome, one and all, to my... game, you could call it. Ha ha ha." The people around me were outraged, and probably frightened, though they didn't all look the type to admit it. "Patience, patience, my players," the voice continued. I stopped to take another glance over the grassland. I couldn't find an end to it. I picked up again. "It will come in time. It always does. For now, though, please enjoy yourselves. After all, beating the game earns you your freedom from it. Oh, yes, you will find in-game instructions in your Travelers' Guide, depending on your class. Now, good luck. Ha ha ha...."

The voice faded, and threw me off guard. Where had it gone? Unfortunately, I ended up running directly into a black-haired boy, about my age who had been shouting at the sky voice. I tumbled back, landing on my rear, and knocking my staff out of my hand. "Ow ow ow...."

--------------------------------------------------

:a s h e:

The first thing I saw was blinding sunlight, forcing me to sit up and rub my aching head with a frown. What had happened? I had just registered my character in the Nephilim game on my PlayStation when it felt as if someone had clubbed me over the head. Obviously, I had awoken here. But... where was here. It was about to be explained — though, vaguely — by a voice overhead. Now, I was sure I was dreaming, and I pinched myself to make sure. No, I was definitely awake.... So, what was going on?

One minute, I was avoiding my horrid twin cousins, Coralie and Rosalie, in the basement.... The next, I was — if I was comprehending this correctly — sucked into my new video game. There was something wrong with this.

I stood and examined myself. At least I looked good, the clothes were skin-tight leather, something I had only dreamed of wearing before. This felt nice. For once, I felt powerful, swift and light as the wind. It made me smile. I could get used to this quickly.

Brandon

"Oof!" Brandon grunted as someone bumped into him. "Watch where you're going!" he yelled at the person as he turned toward them. He wouldn't normally be so brusque, except that he was pretty shaken by recent events. "Oh, sorry," he added, almost before he realized it was a girl, albeit a weird-looking girl. "Sorry," he repeated. "Ah... My name is Brandon Decker," he added.

"Instructions in my Travelers' Guide?" Shiori repeated. She located the relevant book in a new satchel she found lying next to her. She sat down and read it.

A transcript is as follows:

Welcome to the game of Nephilim. Here, we employ an ingenious AI (Artificial Intelligence) system that allows the NPCs to respond in real time to your actions and questions, and also allows the game to perfectly simulate real-time combat. We hope you enjoy the experience, and please send us your feedback on this product. If it fails to completely draw you in within the first week of playing, send it back along with any and all complaints you have and we will do our level best to address your concerns. Thank you for reading this.

("Well, it really did draw me in," Shiori thought dryly.)

You have selected this class: Blood Dancer. This class is a fast, lightweight class with many offensive and evasive options available. Your tutorial for fighting effectively starts as soon as you touch this link: :Link:

"Touch the link?" Shiori said. This was all going over her head. "Well, I suppose I've got nothing better to do." She touched the link... and everyone else disappeared from the plains.

Shiori consulted the Guide for further instructions, and no sooner did she do so than writing appeared where the link was. "When you're in battle, only you, your party, and certain NPCs will appear on the map. Obviously, enemies are considered NPCs for the purposes of this tutorial. To accomplish this, we will reroute you to an alternate dimension to fight. Now for your first lesson. Bring up the Status screen. This can be accomplished by speaking the word "Status" aloud."

"Status," Shiori said aloud. Instantly, a pink window appeared, like you might find on a computer. It contained Shiori's personal data, including stats, age, abilities, equipment, and even, Shiori noted with disgust, a perfectly accurate 3-D model of her nude body. She didn't like the color pink herself, but thought it was fitting because she was a girl.

She looked down at the Traveler's Guide for further instructions. "While the Status menu is active, time will stop in-battle. This can be useful for planning strategy. However, you may not move from your position, attack, or use spells or skills while the Status menu is active."

"Well that's kind of cheap," Shiori noted.

"Please close the Status menu now, by saying the word "Resume" aloud, and touch this link. :Link:"

"Resume," Shiori said, and the status menu closed. She touched the link, and a monster appeared before her. Obviously, this was a cause for shock, but with the help of the tutorial, she managed to get a feel for the game's mechanics. She noted that she was extremely fast, and that her body seemed to do whatever she told it to. It was a nice feeling.

Lowen

After he finished reading the Travelers Guide mentioned by the voice from above. He looked around. There was some big cloud of dust with some fighting effect like "Bang!", "Pow!", or something. He thought "Seems like everyone doing the tutorial fight." Right after he thought of that. A man that looked like a medieval villager bumped him... "Oof! Hey young man, mind that you just bumped an old man."

========================================

Azel

"Sorry old man... I was deep in thought." Azel said. "You're not doing the tutorial fight? I don't." Azel continues. "Anyway, the name is Azel... I'm going to leave this place already... Whats your name sir?" asks Azel to Lowen. "Ah, you're that Azel... Anyway I'm Lowen, an arcane warrior. Anyway, whats your class young Azel?" Lowen replies to Azel. "I'm a berserker."

"I see... I think we might need a healer." said Lowen "but that can wait" Lowen continues. "Lets go"

With that said they leave the place heading south.

The boy I ran into yelled at me, and I stared up at him, almost dumbly. Then, he softened and apologized, adding his name. I smiled now, tilting my head to the side. "No, I'm the one who should be sorry. I ran into you; I should be a little more careful." I pulled myself up, clearing my robes. "My name's Hali Hayashimizu. Nice to meet you!"

Already I was impressed by the graphics in this game. This boy was so real!

:a s h e:

Slightly disturbed by the image of myself naked, I closed the Traveller's Guide and looked around. I played this sort of game all the time — minus a few highly unsettling details. Battle would be simple, and I would rather learn against a real opponent rather than some monster that I could hit over and over and wouldn't lose health or strike back. Tutorials were a waste of time, and I nearly always skipped them when I could. I liked to learn on my own; it was just one of my many traits.

I stretched now, getting used to my new clothes. They were a little tight, but I didn't mind. They needed some serious working in, especially my boots; so I began to walk. I wasn't exactly sure where to go in this grassland; but when in doubt, socialize. I made my over to the first guy I saw, a redhead who was headed west.

"Hey, you!" I ran to his side, testing this ability. It felt good; light and easy. I had guessed that this game would probably mess with our stats. I didn't realize it would have such a great effect. "Hey, do you know what's going on here?"

Brandon

"Nice to meet you," Brandon said. "I'm a Mage, by the way. What class are you?"

"I'm a Mage, too!" I held out my staff to show him. All that I knew about Mages was that they casted magic and carried around staffs. For lack of any better ideas with playing games like this, I decided that a Mage would be a good choice, considering the fact that their attacks were ranged and I wouldn't need to get close to my enemies — playing other games, getting up close to the enemy for an attack made me nervous and I often ended up dead myself.

Having had this thought cross my mind, I decided that I should probably seek help. Brandon looked like "Uhmm, Brandon? I don't play games like this often.... Would you mind if I stuck around and watched to pick it up?"

Naru

Reading the Traveler's Guide as he moves along, Naru notices a small town in the distance. He decides to go there for the night. When arriving at the village, he could see they were being attacked by monsters.

"I guess I could use some action now and again. Walking was getting quite boring, anyway. These villagers don't deserve this attack."

Naru then proceeds to fight all of the monsters, most of them retreating after seeing him kill their friends.

"That was too easy. I guess I could use some items."

Aki

Aki continues the walk to the mountains, having read the Guide in her downtime. She sees smoke clouds with sound effects. It seems others have advanced further than her. She starts to worry.

"I should find someone to travel with, it's kinda scary wandering around by myself. But who to look for...?"

She looks around and luckily sees two people speaking, both Mages, one is female. She awkwardly walks up to both of them.

"Excuse me, may I join your party? I don't want to walk around this place alone."

Aki bowed and gives a smile to them.

"My name is Aki Hantsuki, nice to meet you."
