These past couple years, ive noticed that smartphones are becoming more popular among regular consumers rather than just business types. Blackberry has dominated this market for years it seems but then Apple came in and changed the game for smartphones. Its main focus on a sleek interface and the integration of apps made other companies think. Microsoft is also in the mobile phone os race but windows mobile is not as successful as RIM's (Blackberry) or Apple's (iPhone) iOS. Since then Apple has been gaining ground on to RIM's dominated territory. Now Apple and RIM seem to have more competition with Google's Android OS. Android has taken the world by storm mostly because it is an open source mobile os and features thousands of apps just like the iPhone though not nearly as many as of yet. With Apple and Google gaining ground in the market, RIM and Microsoft have both came into the race with new updated OS's. RIM OS6 is slated for this fall (not quite sure) and Microsoft's Windows Mobile 7 is set for the end of the year. Right now, my fascination is with Google's Android OS and it keeps getting better with every update. Next year seems like it will be a good year for smartphones seeing as companies are switching to 4g like sprint and latest phones with latest os will be out. any comments about smartphones of your choice? |

I'm forever an avid fan of the Android mobile operating system, well my reasons are somewhat common and obvious, "I LOVE ANDROID BECAUSE IT'S OPEN-SOURCE!" I currently own a Motorola Dext, trying to save up to get myself either a HTC Evo 4G or a Sony Ericson X10. |

it defiinitely have to be android. it's open source, free and you could even customize how it feels and don't even have a need for jailbreak unlike iphone, though you still could root it if it's not rooted by default. even the apps at the android app store is increasing at a steady rate and android in itself is gaining popularity. sadly though, i'm using htc hd2. it's a good phone if not for windows mobile. running android above it with haret is good and all, but it still won't give the feel and performance an android phone have. i'm kinda looking forward for htc evo, though it's not available in my country yet. too bad the evo is capped at 30fps... |

I've used an Android Google Phone of my friend and it really amaize me. It is easily be customize in your own way. I'm using an Iphone and see some difference on it. Opensource Community has a big impact on processing and updating Android in its good condition. But Iphone's OS is more good because it has many support and good media recreation distributed by Apple like games, add-ons, and some tools rather than Android. Apple is more on commercializing their iphone with great software availability and good games that can encourage youngsters to buy one. Microsoft manipulates computer software industry, and Apple was trying it to, for Mobile and Handheld PCs like Iphones and Ipod/Ipad. My Iphone and Ipod Touch was jailbreak using Spirit. And I've expanded the use of my Iphone and Ipod touch from a typical phone, gaming device, and music player, I've setup it to be use as SFTP, Remote Monitoring System, Simple Programming Consule, Terminal, and other sort of secret stuffs that I've discovering and testing up right now. Even opensource gives us a good priority to use Iphones applications as Free. ^_^ Hey, I have a question to you. Did you already use or try the China's product known as IPED? Not Ipod or Ipad, but IPED. It also uses an Android OS. Do some of you use or try it? |

Nope, I've seen in at Kotaku though. It was kind of interesting there's lots of iPad keep-it-real-fakes though, from the iPed you mentioned, to Sanxi's supersized iPod and TESO's iPad look-alike. Interestingly enough, they do make a good iPad alternatives... |

Yeah I've been using a Blackberry Curve for quite some time now, though I took internet off due to it being too much monthly (bill). I still love my Curve, the open full keyboard has to be the best physical keyboard out there, in my opinion. Although slowly these days, I've begun to text a lot less now, I prefer talking online but people still prefer texting (especially girls). I really want to upgrade though, but not sure what yet. I thought about the Blackberry Storm for a little while now, and then there's the new Storm 2 coming out I believe. Blackberry is loosing market slowly in the smartphone business though, obviously why. I like the iPhone, and the Android seems to be beat the iPhone in sales and other aesthetics now, too. I'd get the iPhone if the bill wasn't so much, and what I hate now with any plan, if you're getting a smartphone you have to buy the extra package with internet, which is around 20$ along with the bill for the phone already. You're at least paying 60$ a month on a phone, and honestly there should be a non-internet smartphone plan now. I have an iTouch, waiting for the new one which might have a camera, so that'll be interesting. I also jailbroke it (legally, officially), and it was so easy, didn't need any app or anything for it either. But yeah, I see people with the old iPhone and the new iPhone 4, I think that's stupid. I love the touch screen keyboard for the iTouch/iPhone though, I think it's probably the smoothest out there thus far. I've seen the Storm's touch screen, it has that click to it, like with Curves or Bolds, can't really give my opinion on that, but I heard that the touch screen was laggy, which was why I might not get it, not sure. But if I'm not going to whore out texting like I used to years ago, then it might be okay for short term conversations. I'd have to check it out myself though, and from what I saw online, it's fairly less expensive now (the pre-2 one anyways). My sister is getting a new phone this Fall, but since money is so tight and I really don't NEED a new phone, might just pass, until I get money on my own at least, and buy it with my money entirely, then I'll think about it. There are other smartphones out there from foreign companys, that I think would open up the market in the states. People here are SO biased when it comes to a phone, it's either a Droid or an iPhone now, but there's so much competition from Europe and Korean/Japan that they're luckily they're not being challenged. I think so anyways. About that iPad wannabe, seems like an oversized iPod (mp3 player) just larger (which is what the definition of an iPad really is, haha), but that white makes it look like an iPod (not iTouch) and it looks weird with the taskbar. It comes with that stick, which is pretty neat, and for less than 300$, might be a good deal depending on what it's capable of. If it can do anything like the iPad, then yeah, a HUGE bargain cause an iPad is like 500$ at least. There's this HD DSLR that has HD movie that's less than 300$ that I'm very interesting in getting, but ugh, I wish I can make some money cause I really want to get that. So many deals left and right. ------- |

Wow, I'm saving up to get myself a Droid X too. There's an official froyo(Android 2.2) update for Droid X around mid-September, I'll probably get the phone around that time. |

Thought I would revive the thread. I now have a mytouch 4g aka htc glacier but I'm waiting on the samsung galaxy s2 variant for my carrier. Got to play with windows phone 7 since the last time I posted and it's very nice. I like how streamlined it is but it doesn't offer much when it comes to customization. To those running android on their phones. Are you rooted and rommed by any chance? |

@Ray Well, I'm still using a HTC HD2 but I've flashed Magldr 1.13 to boot Android from NAND, the Nandroid (NAND + Android, fyi) is by default rooted (look it up through xda). I've installed Windows Phone 7 on it before but I find it not as nice as Android, though it still is better than iOS. My mom's using a HTC Wildfire S, but it seems like I can't root it yet. Tried using Android Debugging (ADB) to root it but it won't work, Anyways, do you partition your SD card? I partitioned my 8GB class 2 micro sd to 5.6GB FAT32, 2GB ext4 and 256MB swap. I find having having swap space on the sd card speeds up the phone a little |

Lol nice kay. I do not have my sd partitioned because I haven't seen a reason to yet. I'm running cyanogenmod 7 on my phone and ever since they updated to 7.1 my phone has been running silky smooth. I have also tried miui but I wasn't getting the kind of battery life I was getting with cm7. Yeah seems some phones can be harder to root than others and may require a different rooting method. It's good to see that other people use adb because one click root takes the fun out of rooting lol. |

@Ray Lol, I usually use one click root when I'm too lazy but most of the time I rather use adb. It feel much safer since I know what is being done to the phone and what other "tweaks" I can do at the same time :D |

Yeah I like using adb because its pretty much the sure fire way to root. If you a manufacturer decides to patch an exploit to root. The first way that's going to found again is through adb before anything else. I just put miui rom on my phone last night with a pretty nice theme. Its kind of iphone ish but since its android its still way customizable. I will post some screens today |

@Ray Don't really like the MIUI theme. Too much like an iPhone and I don't really like iPhones. I still prefer using HTC Sense, because of its simple UI. |

I'm still using the typical old kind of phone... I've found out the other day about Japan's clamshell android phone. Totally awesome. But sadly, its only available in Japan and China. I really hope they'll go worldwide. It has an android 2.3, 8MP camera and a numeric keypad. I guess I like it cause of it keypad+ android thing. I can't seem to type with touchscreens. They hate me =.=

Yeah I used my one friend's HTC (not sure what model specifically) before and it's cool. The phone feels like a small brick, but the interface I like. I still use my Blackberry Curve which is still great, but I barely call anyone let alone text these days. Not sure if I upgrade or not, I think iPhones are way overpriced but a white iPhone is definitely sexy. I have AT&T and thought about going to Sprint since my aunt has been with them for a long time and their plans seem cheaper for more. AT&T's don't have the deepest variety of phones but it's still home to the iPhone and Torch. Anyone try the Torch? I tried it before and it's pretty neat. But yeah like I said I don't use my phone for much, if I plan to upgrade my phone I'll try to use it more often for like daily plans and stuff. But really I'd get internet just to tweet where ever I go, lol. ------- |

@kay I don't mind ios. I appreciate the iphone's technology, I just dislike the arrogance of apple. @aozora you should check to see if you can get it unlocked if it's a gsm phone and see if it's compatible with the network you are on. @da actually att had the biggest selection when it comes to phones. They used to be pretty one sided with just the iphone but since the iphone lost its exclusivity to verizon, they have been pumping out phones pretty often. I heard the torch was ok but Im seeing a lot of people defecting away from blackberry. They are on the brink of being left behind because they aren't bring innovative plus the lack of app support. |

I guess I haven't checked out their phones for a while, for years in fact so I wouldn't be up to speed. However I think Blackberry is still top-notch and can only improve, cause when the Torch came out, it was the #1 phone in America, I just think Blackberry's overlooked cause the iPhones's more popular and now with all these Droid phones. ------- |

Research in motion (blackberry creators) is losing stocks badly. They have lost contact with the main consumer base. The reason iphone and android are doing so well is because they appeal to main consumer base with social integration and app development. Blackberries seem so generic that noone wants them anymore. The reason the torch had such a good launch is because it want their usual stuff but after initial launch sales declined drastically. They are going to release a new line if phones soon with a brand new os which well probably make our break the company. The ceos are already threatened to being fired by the board if they don't produce results by the end of this quarter. |

Yeah I agree, but it's good to have a phone that a lot of other people don't have, right? lol maybe, I don't use much of my Curve anyways, but I'm sure once I get active again (school hopefully, job hopefully, etc.) my needs for communication will soon rise again like when I was still going to college in the city. Yeah I haven't seen a Torch or Blackberry commercial in a long time. Well, other than that Notebook commercial, and that product is pretty neat, so at least they're active with something, but yeah if I upgrade my phone I gotta see what's good out there. Definitely no need for an iPhone, maybe if I become famous I can get one and look cool. ^_^ ------- |
