What do YOU define as anime?
Link | by night_link on 2005-06-20 13:49:57
Lets face it, theres cartoons that come from Japan that is anime. But what about shows such as The HiHi Puffy Ami Yumi Show and other cartoons? Remember when Batman Beyond first came out? There used to be a debate that America was trying to make its own anime style and stuff like that. Whats your opinion on what defines anime?

That it has this certain feel to it. Like Megatokyo, I think that could qualify. There is a humor and style to it.

Ironically the "word" anime is neither English or Japanese it's actually a french word meaning "animation" obviously.

For me any cartoon that is made in Japan, I'll consider it anime.

anime?
something the us can never make.
(nice try though-batman beyond, teen titans, samurai jack...)

but who do they wanna fool? sure, they give them hair, eyes, looks, powers, even names like anime...but what about the storyline, and most important-character development.(you dont need to be perfect to be an anime hero...but get over your faults eventually)and thats something, they are not used to...

Well, anything from Japan is an anime for me... And anything from the US is a cartoon. o_o; That's basically how most people I know classify things as well, but I dunno...

well i dun think anything made from japan is anime bc like u know that show Spongebob Squarepants? i read the credits and the makers are US, Japan and Korea so since japan is a part of it is it a anime? and Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi is japanese made and its crap is it a anime? or Powerpuff girls which is japanese and american so is it a cartoonime? lol Well I like the show Ravemaster and it was originally from japan but US re edited it but ppl think its originally from US but they really dun know then I tell them to look a japanese anime called RAVE and they go like ooo I thought it was a cartoon and stuff.

But anime to me means animation or anything that moves. My country Korea has some animes and stuff like Getbackers which they made together wit Japan and Slam Dunk also which is really old. well even tho they dun give much credit to let ppl know they worked together I admire them and so on.
And Cartoon is crappy animation from the US and european countries..haha
well anime and manga is different i know that much hehehe..
also umm wats better? manga and comics
comics has spiderman and all the cool marvel and Manga is like streetfighter and so on hey since they made Marvel vs. Capcom the game they should make like a anime vs. cartoon game lol!

Hey pat! Do you remember Kimba the Lion? I thought that show was great as a kid and my friend too. I believe that some of the makers in Batman Beyond and Teen Titans (HiHi Puffy Ami Yumi sings the theme song) to had makers too from Asia. Thats what I wasnt too sure about. Also if you ever watch like the extra parts in Spirited Away, on the part where they were trying to meet the deadline, there was one part where they were wonderin' to send some sketches to Korea to help get it done on time. I just thought Id say that because you mentioned Slam Dunk. I got a couple missing from the manga collection, but either way its in Chinese... my Chinese isnt so great.

i hate to be the parrot, but anime translates to 'animation' or 'cartoon', not 'japanese animation'. and likewise manga is 'comic book', not 'japanese comic book'. but seeing that most people outside of japan use those terms to refer specifically to those japanese imports that we all love so dearly, it's hard not to use them as such. however, it peeves me when people use the term cartoon solely to degrade western animation. only in the world of western(ized) otaku has that word been redefined to bolster one's superiority complex. anime are cartoons. and please watch stuff outside of cartoon network or the saturday morning lineup before passing judgement on all western animation.

I agree with roasted hot green peas (i had fun typing that whole name by the way) - the shows featured nowadays in networks like WB, Fox and sometimes Cartoon Network tend to adress the mainstream population of elementary kids who would like to get into the trend of the so-called "anime-scene" - the thing is they live in america and how else would big-time networks take advantage of the fad? By attempting to duplicate what is anime (as defined) with a western USA perspective...

Just don't bash ALL western animation :)

Im sorry if I sounded ignorant previously. I guess a more specific topic that I had in mind would kinda be like "What defines the style of art on the DVDs they have at www.animenation.com" or something like that. Ill keep in thought of the meaning of the word.

it's cool - i usually use anime/manga to refer specifically to japanese animation/comics. i just keep hearing people ragging on western animation without giving it any sincere consideration. while i'm no fan of disney's idyllic endings and extremely loose adaptations of existing stories, it can't be denied that disney is one of the great and influential animation studios of all times. for one, the small-nose-and-big-eyes of anime characters are a product of disney's influence. and aside from disney, there are many other western animators out there that who don't produce the banal sludge that fills the american primetime airwaves - e.g. bill plympton, don hertzfeldt, pixar cg, etc.

Although Anime and Manga are terms used in Japan for any animated series or comic book respectively, I feel that in the North American context anime should be considered animation made in Japan for Japanese viewers ( I know alot of it is outscourced to Korea but then again Pooh's Heffilump Movie was animated by Walt Disney Japan but that dosent make it anime) manga is also a comic format we should be using the same definition Comics drawn by Japanese for Japanese consumers. But thats just my opinion.

There really is no such thing as anime. We just use that term to describe the style of Japanese cartoons. It's hard to come up with guidelines to separate anime from non-anime, so maybe they really are the same thing. A better word for it would be Japanese animation, but then again, just because something is animated in Japan doesn't make it anime style or anime quality. There definitely is a different look and feel to most Japanese cartoons, but it's too hard to define what that is -_-...

naruto is anime, mickey mouse is cartoon, hehe... lol

i know it's a french term and i know that it means animation (in general) but i still use the term "anime" to refer to japanese animations and "cartoon", (though the technical meaning is just the same) especially in a filipino language game, refers to western animations, those which are created by the warner bros. or walt disney.

i also use "manga" to refer to japanese comics especially because a filipino comics is really different from it. the latter is not issued by chapter. a single edition is a compilation of 4-6 different stories, each only occupy 3-5 pages every issue.

humm anime? ..well Anime is known as J-Cartoon meaning another style of Cartoon...but BETTER, LOL. more detail and looks more realistic and compares to people better. its just to easy to know why..Kingdom Hearts 2 is a pretty good example, the cover, or the charactors too! ^_^ but this doesnt mean I dont watch the cartoons..but I watch anime like 95% over 5% cartoons
